Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Interrogation
Chapter 6: Interrogation
The grand hall of the ruined building was dimly lit, the only sound the creaking of the old wooden beams. Alex stood before Marcus and Raven, his eyes fixed on the two men as they interrogated him. The air was thick with tension, and Alex could feel the weight of their suspicion bearing down on him.
Marcus, his sleeveless shirt showcasing his muscular arms, leaned against a nearby pillar, his eyes narrowed as he asked his questions. Raven, still clad in his leather armor and dark hoodie, stood silently at Marcus's side, his eyes fixed intently on Alex.
"So, Alex," Marcus said, his voice calm and collected, "would you mind telling us who you really are? And who sent you to this city?"
Alex's expression remained neutral, but his mind was racing. He had already told them his story, but he knew they didn't believe him. He decided to stick to his original tale, hoping to convince them of his innocence.
"I've already told you," Alex said, his voice firm. "My name is Alex, and I'm just a normal survivor. I've been on my own since the world went to hell, and I've managed to survive through luck and determination."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, his eyes flicking to Raven, who nodded slowly. Marcus sighed, his expression skeptical. "So, you didn't have any intention of visiting this city?" he asked, his voice laced with doubt.
Alex shook his head, his eyes locked on Raven, who seemed to be watching him with an intensity that made Alex's skin crawl. "I just stumbled into the city by accident," Alex said, trying to sound convincing.
Marcus turned to Raven again, who shook his head. Alex's eyes narrowed, a sudden realization dawning on him. "Don't tell me he can tell whether I'm lying or not," Alex thought, a shiver running down his spine.
The idea seemed ridiculous, but Alex couldn't shake the feeling that Raven was somehow able to read him. He clicked his tongue, a gesture of frustration, and shook his head.
Marcus's eyes narrowed, his expression unreadable. "Raven, what do you think?" he asked, his voice low and even.
Raven's eyes never left Alex's face as he responded. "I think he's hiding something," Raven said, his voice low and gravelly.
Alex's heart sank, his mind racing with possibilities. Marcus's expression turned thoughtful, his eyes never leaving Alex's face. "I think we'll need to keep a closer eye on you, Alex," Marcus said, his voice firm. "You're not telling us the whole truth, and I aim to find out what you're hiding."
Alex's eyes widened, a sense of unease settling over him. He knew he had to be careful, that one misstep could mean disaster. He nodded, trying to appear cooperative, but his mind was already racing with plans to escape.
Marcus then said nonchalantly, with a calm tone, "Okay, it's about to get dark soon. Why don't you go get some rest? We have a lot to discuss tomorrow, like what you discovered when you were inside the library?"
Marcus's tone gradually turned amused as he spoke, and Alex felt a chill run down his spine. He had been caught off guard, and he knew he had to think fast.
Earlier, he had thought that Raven hadn't seen him emerging from the library, and had seemingly decided not to mention this part to them. With their obsession towards the library, Alex had imagined that they would start to regard him with more importance to their mission, which went against his goals of escaping, since he didn't need any further attention.
But now it seemed he had been fooled, and Raven already knew that he had entered the library. He might even know that Alex had spent a night inside. Seeing that denying this would be fruitless, Alex seemingly lowered his head and remained silent.
His sense of urgency in escaping grew even stronger. He knew he had to get out of there, and fast, before they could extract any more information from him.
After this, one of the guild members came inside the hall and led him towards his resting chambers. Alex was led to a small room, guarded by two guild members with muscular builds and menacing faces.
Upon seeing these two bodyguards, Alex knew that escaping his predicament wasn't going to be easy. The room was small, with stone walls and a single window high up on the wall. The window was barred, and Alex knew he wouldn't be able to escape through it.
The guild member who had led him to the room left some instructions to the two guards on the door. "Keep a close eye...on him," the guild member said, his voice firm. "He's not to leave this room until Marcus says so. And make sure he doesn't try anything... creative."
The two guards nodded, their faces expressionless. Alex felt a shiver run down his spine as he realized he was truly trapped.
After the guild member left, Alex was left alone in the room. He looked around, trying to take in every detail. The room was small, with stone walls and a single window high up on the wall. The window was barred, and Alex knew he wouldn't be able to escape through it.
He walked over to the window and looked out. The view was bleak - a ruined cityscape stretching out as far as the eye could see. Alex felt a pang of despair. How was he going to escape?
He turned away from the window and began to pace back and forth across the room. He had to think, and he had to come up with a plan. But every idea he came up with seemed flawed, and also doomed to fail.
"Dammit...how did l even end up in this messy?" Alex couldn't help but voice out in frustration.
As he paced back and forth, Alex's eyes fell on the two guards standing outside his door. They were big and muscular, and they looked like they hadn't smiled in years. Alex knew he wouldn't be able to take them down in a fight, well at least not both of them at the same time.
But maybe, just maybe, he could outsmart them.
Alex's mind began racing as he thought of all the ways he could escape. He could try to bribe the guards, or maybe even create a diversion to draw them away from the door.
As he thought about this, he rooted out the first choice. Bribing , these guards didn't seem to be a good idea. Not only did Alex not have anything to sway these men with, but he couldn't be sure if they were really vulnerable to it.
Usually men who joined idealistic groups like this ones, didn't join it pursue of wealth, and usually joined it for their beliefs.
Tricks like bribery, didn't work on men like them.
As for the second option, diversion....
As he thought, Alex's eyes fell on a small, rusty nail that was sticking out of the wall. It was thin and looked like it wouldn't be much use, but Alex's mind was racing with possibilities.
He walked over to the nail and examined it more closely. It was thin, but it looked like it might be just long enough to pick the lock on the door.
Alex's heart began to pound with excitement. Maybe, just maybe, he had found his ticket out of there.
But as he reached out to grab the nail, Alex heard a voice behind him.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," the voice said.
Alex spun around, his heart racing. One of the guards was standing in the doorway, a smirk on his face.
"You're not as sneaky as you think you are," the guard said, his eyes glinting with amusement. "We've been watching you, and we know all about your little escape plans."
Alex's face fell, his heart sinking. He had been caught, and now he was in even more trouble.
