Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Return to Dragon's nest
Oberyn Sandal stood awkwardly beside Teclis Hoeth. Oberyn was a noble knight from Dorne, once serving under House Manwood of King's Tomb. However, after House Wyl seized many of their lands, including Oberyn's village, the already poor knight had been forced to sell his armor to sustain his village. He then met a tragic fate when Ullen Wyl summoned him north to fight, only for his village to be burned by Womisor and the Silverwing.
Thankfully, Oberyn managed to escape quickly, hiding in the mountains for several days. With a few peasant soldiers from his village, he joined Draezell's army as a wandering knight.
Draezell paid his soldiers well and provided ample supplies.
Though Oberyn was poor, he was a skilled warrior. On the battlefield, he followed Lord Tarly cavalry, breaking through the Dornish cavalry line. He personally slew several noble knights, killed an illegitimate son of House Wyl with a javelin, and, most importantly, captured the House Uller's banner. This was why he now stood before Draezell.
The only downside was encountering a familiar face—Teclis Hoeth, the lord of a small village in the frontier. It wasn't that the two families had a personal grudge, but Dornish and frontier peoples had been intertwined in love and hate for millennia. Though they shared blood feuds, they also shared bloodlines.
What made things awkward was that in their younger years, during a time of peace, Oberyn had courted Teclis daughter. He had almost succeeded in running off with her, but then, war broke out.
As a result, Oberyn could not bring himself to meet Teclis gaze, while Tygiris watched Oberyn's back with a thoughtful expression.
Lynn Valtaken turned the page of the book in his hands to the section about Oberyn. "Sir Oberyn Sandal, in battle, killed two Wyl knights, captured their armor; three Uller's knights, captured their armor and warhorses; three Toland's knights, captured their warhorses; slew Uller commander, Sir Arthur Sand, captured his warhorse, armor, and one Uller banner. Oberyn, do you accept your accomplishments?"
"No objections." Oberyn felt his calves trembling. Seven hells, he thought, he had never been this nervous during battle. He kept feeling that Draezell, sitting up on the platform, would suddenly have his dragon burn him alive with a single fiery breath.
"Your Highness, I do not dare deceive you. I was once the lord of Starcoin Village here in Dorne, but I was forced to join the war because of the turmoil stirred by House Wyl."
"I understand your plight," Draezell replied. He was well aware of the thoughts of the remaining local Dornish nobles, like Oberyn, who had suffered greatly after Ullen's aggressive conscription campaign.
The people and nobles in the Stone Road territory had been devastated. Oberyn's village, Starcoin, was located in the north, less affected by the war, but its population had sharply decreased. The nearby villages, where the lords had died, were almost deserted.
"Sir Oberyn, your accomplishments prove your bravery. I recognize your claim to Starcoin Village, and the four villages and mills around it, which have lost their knights, are now also yours. Furthermore, as your reward, I will grant you gold worth 1500 golden dragons, enough to build a small castle."
"May the Seven bless you, Your Highness." Oberyn Sandal let out a sigh of relief and knelt on one knee. "House Sandal will serve you for eternity, until the last Sandal returns to the Stranger."
Riches! Oberyn's excitement soared. 1500 golden dragons, if spent wisely, would leave him with plenty. It was more than enough to try courting Teclis daughter again.
This time, when he turned to face Teclis, he dared to look him in the eyes. It was then that he realized Tygiris had been looking at him with a supportive and approving gaze.
Oberyn stood taller.
Teclis Hoeth, as a lord of Draezell's lands, had brought his 9-year-old son, Elarion Hoeth, to the battlefield. Of course, the older Hoeth had not let the boy fight on the frontlines. Instead, Teclis himself had killed several Dornish knights, including one well-known knight, alongside Aslan Rondell cavalry.
His rewards were simpler—a sum of gold sufficient to refurbish House Hoss's old tower castle and a decree confirming his landholdings.
Draezell stayed behind mainly to settle the land issues of the new and old territories. The regions of Green Courtyard, Flat Valley, and Grace Ridge were all fertile, rich in resources, and situated along important trade routes. Draezell used them to establish estates to support the Silverblood army and his vassals. Every veteran's family was granted land sufficient to support one full-time soldier.
Meanwhile, territories like Sand Pillars, Stone Peak, and the Risky Border were partially designated for coastal ports and towns to be directly governed by Draezell. The remaining lands were granted to local nobles and vassals, such as the Hoss, Haydon and Isabur.
As the chief vassal of the Vaelarys family, Vansen Kaon was granted permission to build a castle for his house. House Valtaken, Pyrebane, Dondarrion and Fezer, were also granted the right to construct their own castles. They were allowed to build castles in the new Dornish lands to maintain order. However, once these castles were completed, they would be governed by officials appointed by Draezell, with the family heads remaining in Dragon's nest to assist him.
Dorne's territories were re-divided. The lands east of the mountains, near the bay, were directly governed by Draezell and designated for the construction of a large port city. The northern valleys were intricately partitioned, with Houses like the Hermosa and other foreign Houses mixing in with local families such as the Sandal, keeping the status quo. More importantly, a large influx of people from the east flooded the region, becoming the foundation of Draezell's rule.
As the situation in the new territories gradually stabilized, the Dornish, who had received tax exemptions and military protection, surprisingly accepted Draezell's rule. After all, people were practical—the key to everything was simply being able to eat and survive.
In contrast, the southern part of Dorne became increasingly chaotic. After realizing that Draezell was not planning to descend south in the near future, Lewyn Yronwood immediately gathered an army, attempting to seize Prince's Pass. The heavily depleted Prince Qoren was also regrouping his forces, but what he did not expect was that the damnable Ullers had sent men to steal Martell's grain.
Enraged, Prince Kaoren immediately spent a large sum to recruit 2,000 soldiers, finally driving the elusive Uller's bandits out of the only remaining land under his control.
The Dayne, however, remained eerily quiet, with no one knowing what the Lord of the Torrent River had in mind.

Dragon's Nest
Thanks to the urgent construction by the craftsmen brought by Draezell, in just a few months, Dragon's Nest had taken shape. The town below had gradually transformed from a tent city into a town of wood and stone.
This town, Now named Summerhall, was vast. At its center stood a town hall, still under construction with wooden scaffolding and a marble foundation, capable of holding thousands of people. Six wide roads extended outward, linking south to the Boneway and north to the end of King's Road. On the east side of the town, a cathedral rose, and on the west, a forest was slowly taking shape. From the town hall outward, the houses gradually changed from tents to beautiful buildings made of wood and stone.
Atop the mountain, Dragon's Nest itself was imposing. Narrow roads wound upward, leading to a dragon-shaped gate embedded into the mountain, part of the first circle of walls that blended with the high mountain. Within this circle stood the Sword Tower, Laurel Leaf Tower, Flame Tower, and Temple of the Gods. The fishbeam wood, transplanted from the far north, grew here as well.
Higher up, new black walls were integrated into the mountain, and the mountain's top melted into three towers: the slender and elegant Dragon Crystal Tower, the mighty Dragonpit Tower, and the dark Crow's Tower. These three towers surrounded the last layer of towering walls, whose surfaces were covered in intricate patterns. At first glance, nothing stood out, but upon closer inspection, one could discern the flame-like patterns. The Silverblood Tower stood proudly at the center of the nine towers, flanked by the Twin Towers, connected by long corridors.
The interiors of the nine towers had been completed, and construction was still underway for other buildings in the town, such as the cathedral and stables.
Jacaerys and Lucerys had already returned to Dragon's Nest, awaiting the next opportunity for battle.
"Little Snow Rabbit, want to visit the Dragonpit?" Prince Lucerys knocked on Rey's door enthusiastically.
"Big Squirrel, if you call me by that nickname again, I'll go tell my brother!" Rey grumbled as he yanked the door open and playfully grabbed Lucerys.
After returning to Dragon's Nest, Rey had his own room in the Twin Towers. It wasn't large, with a velvet canopy bed from Volantis at the center, and expensive carpets from the Vaelarys carpet workshop, which had gradually started up again and was returning to full production. The corners of the room were filled with various books, along with a few scattered toys.
Rey actually liked reading, he just didn't like Maester Visari's lectures.
"Hehe, you called me by my nickname too," Lucerys teased, tugging on Rey's hand. Their similar ages made them fast friends. "Big Squirrel? Was it my brother who told you that?"
"Maybe," Rey stuck his tongue out at Lucerys. "Anyway, my brother doesn't mind if I call him Little Snow Rabbit. By the way, where's Little Jay? I haven't seen him all day."
"Little Jay," Lucerys said as he pulled Rey down the staircase. "I bet he went to Laurel Leaf Tower."
"You should learn from Little Jay, Big Squirrel." Rey pulled Lucerys into a hug. "Read more books."
"Sounds like you don't want to watch the Shadowmare either." Lucerys said, a bit envious. "Shadowmare is growing so fast. If it weren't so thin, it might even look bigger than my Arrax."
"Shadowmare really doesn't look like the dragons in the records," Rey recalled his own dragon. "Normal dragons aren't covered in spikes and they aren't that thin."
"But Shadowmare fire is white," Lucerys asked curiously. "How does it do that?"
"I don't know," Rey shook his head and casually nodded at a Silverblood soldier who was patrolling nearby.
"Your Highness, the mechanism to access the Dragonpit is ready." The soldier, seeing where the two princes were headed, knew they were going to the Dragonpit.
Dragonstone had grown so large that if they had to walk all the way from the Twin Towers to the Dragonpit Tower, then up the long stairway into the pit, it would take quite some time.
But Draezell had a solution. The Silverblood Tower was directly connected to the hollowed-out mountain, and Draezell had installed a mechanism there that could transport people directly to the Dragonpit.
Rey and Lucerys ran through the corridor to the Silverblood Tower, climbed two more flights of stairs, and arrived at a platform.
A huge gear slowly began to turn.
The platform descended, gradually disappearing into the darkness.
In the darkness, faint sounds of dragon roars echoed.
When the platform finally came to a steady stop, the two princes stepped off and immediately heard two long dragon roars coming from outside the mountain.
"They're back!" Rey instantly recognized the voices of Vermithor and Silverwing.
