Werewolf in DC vs. Vampires

Chapter 30: Dreams and Dead-men

Lucien ran past everyone, closing in on the sound of Bat-girls screams, senses straining to hear the cause alongside them.

Nothing.

He needed to get closer.

She writhed and squirmed in a nearby testing room shielded by tinted windows.

As he jumped through the reinforced glass dividing them all from eachother, he transformed.

Which probably wasn't the smartest since the room was surprisingly small. Only he fit. The others crowded behind him at the broken window.

"What the hell happened?" He looked around, sniffing the room knowing all he'd catch where the scents of Red Hood, Signal, Bat-girl and not much beyond the computers and couches.

"I don't know!" Red-Hood replied.

"She was sleeping. That's it— and then she just started doing this." Signal held her as she screamed and swatted at whatever was attacking her in her dreams.

Constantine pushed his way to the front of the group.

"Vampires with a strong enough connection to someone are known to be able to invade dreams. But it's usually someone they share blood with or have fed on."

"What about other fluids?" Bruce asked.

"What?"

"…..oh." Lucien caught on with everyone else soon after.

"It's Nightwing." Bruce said in a hoarse voice. "He's in her head."

"So let's shut it down." Lucien said.

"Does your ice magic somehow freeze the mind safely?" Constantine asked sarcastically.

"No. We're in a lab. There's got to be narcotics somewhere." Lucien jumped back out the window, "Bruce, stay with her."

Not long after and he began scenting for anything of use in the lab.

As he traveled the halls, he found he was being followed.

Vixen sped up to walk beside him as she sniffed the halls as well. "What a day."

"Not the worst."

"Oh trust me, I know." She said.

"Right."

They hit a corner and snorted at the same time as the scent of sanitizer maximized momentarily.

They recovered and headed up a flight of stairs.

"So how nervous are you?" Vixen asked, "I mean behind the mean mugging and angry grunts."

Lucien stopped at the top of the stairs, catching the scent of a narcotic he knew well. Oxycodone. Smelled like sugar and burnt marshemellows. Suddenly prior drug addictions had a benefit.

"Honestly….. I'm not nervous." Lucien said, "Which doesn't sound right out loud."

"At all." Vixen agreed.

"I'm just….. angry. I woke up one day and felt like I was in a different world. With these abilities— I mean." Lucien fumbled as he followed the scent down a new wing they hadn't covered. A medic area. He could smell the flash suit threads everywhere in the white area.

"I get you."

"I wanted peace. I wanted the things I missed out on. I thought I could get it. Then this happens." Lucien looked around.

"Did you have a family? A wife?"

"No." Lucien said, "I was in the military most of my adult life. Started at seventeen. They gave me something... other than trauma. It made having a relationship…. A family…. Uhhh… hard."

He walked ahead of her.

"You were infertile."

"Yea." Lucien followed the scent to a door. It was locked. So casually, he grabbed the knob and froze it until it shattered.

"Was it some kind of drug?"

"Yea. Performance enhancement. Go America." Lucien said as he pushed his way inside.

"They do that everywhere, don't they?" Vixen asked.

Lucien nodded, forgetting that in his current world, they actually did.

"Well." Vixen started as he ripped through the cabinets, "I'm sorry your life went from worse to worst."

"It has its moments."

"Oh we've heard." Vixen said.

"Right….. sorry about that."

Vixen shrugged, "The worlds ending. Some times folks need a release."

An awkward silence spread. Thankfully, Lucien found the drugs and they headed on their way out.

"So, who won the try outs?" Vixen asked.

"My top performers are Beastboy, Lagoonboy, Hawkgirl... and you."

"Me?" Vixen asked.

"The only reason you didn't have a similar ammount of kills is because you were left chasing the vampires. No one else was. I think Arisia was testing my discernment abilities. There's a reason Red Robin— a powerless human was fed three constructs and you had to chase one. She wanted to make sure I was paying attention."

"I see." Vixen said.

"Would you accept?" Lucien asked as they headed back to Bat-girl and the others.

"Would it save the world?"

Lucien could tell by her eyes that it was a rhetorical question.

When he made it back to Bat-girl he settled on the idea of changing two by nightfall, realizing by the sight of the woman being assaulted by her previous lover that they didn't have much time.

He was given the mental go-ahead by Raven and Bruce almost immediately, telling him they understood their circumstances all the same.

And also, they were ready to make a move.
