Chapter 27: A Sweet Chance
Yvienna hurriedly pulled Kyle into her closet, pushing him inside with a swift motion. "Don't you dare make a sound, understood?" she whispered fiercely. Kyle nodded silently, his eyes wide like a puppy's. Cute.
As she quickly shut the door, she turned to face the person now standing in her room.
"Yes, Mommy?" she asked, out of breath.
Her mother gave her a puzzled look and immediately checked her forehead with her palm. "Are you okay?" she asked, concern evident in her eyes.
"Yes, Mommy, I'm perfectly fine!" Yvienna quickly looked away, hoping to hide the nervousness in her voice.
"But why are you sweating so much?" her mother pressed, worry creeping into her tone. "It's a bit too hot in here, maybe you should change clothes. Let me help."
Before her mother could open her closet, Yvienna stepped in. "I can do it, Mommy. I'm a big girl now!" she laughed awkwardly, trying to cover her unease.
"Oh, don't be shy! Come on, let me help," her mother insisted.
Yvienna gently pushed her mother's hand away, trying to act casual. "Actually… I think I have a stomach ache," she said, her voice faltering.
Her mother's face immediately softened. "My dear, are you sure you're okay?"
"No, Mommy," Yvienna said, clutching her stomach dramatically. "I think I need… I think I need to taste your brownies. I miss them so much!"
Her mother smiled, shaking her head. "Okay, okay. I'll bake them for you tonight, just wait a little while, okay?"
"Yes, Mommy!" Yvienna grinned. Her mother kissed her forehead before heading out of the room.
A wave of relief washed over Yvienna, but just as she was about to open the closet, she heard a voice from the door.
"Hey, silly cousin! Let's have a movie marathon!" Dashylle's voice rang out, startling her.
She froze, her heart racing, and quickly shut the closet door. Turning to face him, she tried to act casual. "Are you hiding something?" he teased, raising an eyebrow.
"Of course not! Just… go away, okay?" she snapped, pushing him gently.
But Dashylle was persistent, trying to open the closet door. Yvienna managed to shove him back, causing him to stumble and fall.
"Aww! What a kind brat you are!" he said sarcastically, rubbing his shoulder.
"Whatever! Just go back to your room! I need to sleep early!" she snapped.
Dashylle grumbled, "You're so heartless!" as he ran off, leaving her alone.
With the door securely shut and locked, Yvienna collapsed to the ground, feeling the nervous tension leave her body. She was about to stand when, suddenly, Kyle stepped out from the closet. Her eyes widened when she noticed her brassiere caught at the top of his head.
He was completely unaware, too absorbed in his own world. Yvienna cursed silently, realizing how messy her closet was despite its large size. She scrambled over to him, reaching for her brassiere.
But just as she did, they both stumbled, landing on the bed—Kyle beneath her.
The impact left them both stunned, their faces inches apart. Yvienna blinked twice, her gaze lingering on his face. He looked so… handsome.
Before she could pull away, Kyle suddenly wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a tight embrace. Yvienna's heart raced, her pulse thudding in her ears. But before she could give in to the emotions swirling inside her, she pushed herself away, her face flushed. She grabbed her brassiere, hiding it behind her back.
Kyle's eyes were full of confusion. "What are you hiding?" he asked, staring at her.
Yvienna shot him a warning glare. "It's something a man's eyes shouldn't see," she said, her voice a little breathless.
Kyle glanced at the mirror behind her, where he could clearly see the object in her hand. His face turned bright red as he quickly looked away. "So, you're a fan of brownies, too?" he asked, trying to shift the conversation.
Yvienna exhaled in relief, slowly backing away toward the closet to put her brassiere away. "Yeah, do you like them too?"
"Yeah," Kyle said with a teasing smile. "But I like you more."
Yvienna's lips immediately pouted, and she shot him a sharp glare. Kyle's gaze flickered to her terrace, his eyes turning thoughtful. "Can I call you Luna?" he asked, out of nowhere.
Yvienna stared at him. "What?"
"I said, can I call you Luna?" he repeated.
She furrowed her brow. "But why?"
"Because you remind me of the moon," he explained, pointing toward the night sky. "You're beautiful, distant… yet so close, but unreachable."
Yvienna crossed her arms, a little annoyed. "So, why are you here if you think you can't reach me?"
Kyle stepped closer, his voice quieter. "Maybe… there's a small chance?"
Yvienna swallowed, feeling a flutter in her chest as he closed the distance between them. She instinctively took a step back.
"Do I have a chance… to love someone like you?" Kyle's voice cracked, as though he was pouring his heart out. "My Luna?"
Yvienna's thoughts slipped out before she could stop them. "But why so suddenly? You're with Cassandra, right?"
Her eyes widened in shock as she realized what she'd said. She quickly clamped her mouth shut, embarrassed.
Kyle gave a quiet, bitter laugh. "There's nothing between me and Cassandra. My parents want her to be my wife—an arranged marriage, you know? But I never agreed. I won't, no matter how hard they try. It's all about their business. Her parents and mine… they're business partners."
Yvienna stood frozen, the weight of his words sinking in. Could she really trust him? Could she open her heart again?
"I won't rush you, Luna. Just… give me a chance to prove my sincerity," Kyle said, his voice softening. "Goodnight. Have sweet dreams."
With a wink, he turned and quickly jumped off the terrace, disappearing into the night.
Yvienna rushed to the terrace, panicked. "You idiot! What if you hurt yourself?!"
"I'm touched that you care," Kyle's voice called up from below. "Bye!" He climbed the gate and waved at her as he walked away, leaving her standing there, exasperated.
Rolling her eyes, Yvienna couldn't help but smile and chuckle at the idiot. She was about to turn away when a figure in the corner of her vision caught her attention. Her cousin stood there, watching her with a mischievous grin on his face, pointing toward where Kyle had just been.
"I saw that, Yvienna!" he shouted teasingly.
"Shut your ugly mouth, you idiot!" she snapped, but she couldn't hide her smile.
