Chapter 20: The Shadow of Betrayal
The ruins were eerily quiet after the battle, the only sounds being the distant whispers of the wind and the occasional crackle of energy still dissipating in the air. Liang sat on the broken stone floor, his breathing ragged. The Azure Bloom's glow had faded to a faint shimmer, signaling its power was resting, though its presence remained steady within him.
Yuan wiped his blade clean before sliding it back into its sheath. He scanned the area, his expression a mask of calm despite the tension that hung in the air. Mei sat nearby, tending to a shallow wound on her arm with strips of cloth torn from her sleeve.
"We need to move," Yuan said at last, his tone firm. "Chen Yan escaped, and it won't take him long to regroup. He won't let this go unanswered."
Liang nodded, though his limbs felt heavy. The battle had taken more out of him than he expected. He glanced at Mei, whose fiery determination had not dimmed even after their encounter with the rogue cultivator.
"Where do we go?" Mei asked, tightening the makeshift bandage. "Chen Yan already has the map fragments, doesn't he?"
"Not all of them," Yuan replied, his gaze sharp. "The ruins we're in hold a piece of the map. It's likely why Chen Yan sent his men here in the first place. If we move quickly, we can find it before he does."
Mei frowned. "You think he didn't find it yet?"
Liang glanced at the Azure Bloom's interface, searching for guidance. A faint pulse confirmed Yuan's suspicion—there was a hidden artifact nearby, buried beneath layers of rubble and time. "The Azure Bloom says something's here. It's faint, but it's close."
Yuan gave a curt nod. "Then let's not waste any more time."
The three of them worked together, sifting through the debris with a mix of determination and urgency. The ruins were vast, with crumbling walls and partially collapsed corridors. Liang focused on the Azure Bloom's guidance, its faint pulses growing stronger as they ventured deeper into the ancient structure.
"It's like the ruins are alive," Mei murmured, running her fingers over an engraved wall. "The carvings here… they almost look like they're glowing."
Liang paused to look. The intricate patterns etched into the stone indeed seemed to pulse faintly, their light growing stronger as the group moved further inside.
"This place was once a cultivation hub," Yuan explained. "An ancient sect, long forgotten. The Qi here has lingered for centuries, infusing the stones themselves."
Liang's eyes widened. "No wonder Chen Yan's so interested. If the artifact is tied to this place, it could be incredibly powerful."
"Which is exactly why we can't let him have it," Yuan said.
As they reached the heart of the ruins, the Azure Bloom flared brighter, projecting a faint image before Liang's eyes. It showed a hidden chamber beneath their feet, its entrance concealed by a false wall.
"There," Liang said, pointing to a section of the floor. "The chamber's beneath us."
Yuan knelt, examining the area. "A concealed mechanism, most likely. Mei, look for any switches or levers nearby."
Mei nodded and began searching the walls, her hands brushing over the ancient carvings. Liang joined her, his fingers tracing the patterns until he felt a slight indentation.
"Here," he said, pressing the stone.
A deep rumble echoed through the chamber as the floor shifted, revealing a staircase spiraling downward.
Yuan drew his sword, his eyes scanning the darkness below. "Stay alert. We don't know what's waiting for us."
The air grew colder as they descended, the staircase opening into a vast underground hall. Columns adorned with glowing runes lined the walls, and at the center of the chamber stood a pedestal, atop which rested a fragment of a stone tablet.
"The map fragment," Mei whispered, her voice filled with awe.
Liang took a step forward, but Yuan raised a hand to stop him. "Wait."
A faint shimmer surrounded the pedestal, barely perceptible but enough to put Yuan on edge. He reached into his robes and pulled out a small talisman, tossing it toward the pedestal. The talisman disintegrated upon contact with the shimmer, a burst of energy rippling outward.
"A barrier," Yuan said grimly. "Ancient and powerful. It's designed to protect the artifact from anyone unworthy."
"Unworthy?" Liang asked, frowning.
"It's a test," Yuan explained. "Only someone who meets the requirements can pass through. If we force it, we risk destroying the fragment."
Liang stepped forward, feeling the Azure Bloom react to the energy in the room. The interface displayed a series of symbols, aligning with the runes on the columns.
"I think the Azure Bloom can help," he said.
Yuan looked at him, his expression serious. "Be careful. If you're wrong…"
"I'll be fine," Liang said, more confidently than he felt.
He approached the barrier, focusing on the Azure Bloom's guidance. The symbols in his mind glowed brighter, and he raised his hand, tracing the patterns in the air. The runes on the columns pulsed in response, their light growing in intensity until the barrier dissolved.
"You did it," Mei said, her voice tinged with amazement.
Liang reached for the fragment, his fingers brushing against its cool surface. As he picked it up, a surge of energy coursed through him, and the Azure Bloom's interface expanded, displaying a map with faint markings.
"This… it's part of the map," Liang said, turning to Yuan. "But it's incomplete. We'll need the other fragments to make sense of it."
Yuan nodded. "This is a good start. Chen Yan will come for this piece eventually, but now we have leverage."
Before Liang could respond, a sudden tremor shook the chamber. Dust rained from the ceiling, and the columns groaned under the pressure.
"What's happening?" Mei asked, her voice rising in alarm.
"The ruins are collapsing!" Yuan shouted. "Move!"
They sprinted up the staircase, the walls around them cracking and crumbling. The tremors grew more violent with each passing moment, and Liang struggled to keep his balance.
As they emerged into the open air, the ruins behind them caved in, sending up a cloud of dust and debris.
"Barely made it," Mei said, coughing as she leaned against a tree.
Liang clutched the fragment tightly, his heart racing. "That was too close."
Yuan's expression was grim. "Chen Yan knew we'd come here. He must have set a trap to collapse the ruins if anyone tampered with the artifact."
"But we got the fragment," Liang said.
"At a cost," Yuan replied, his gaze distant. "This was just the beginning. Chen Yan won't stop, and neither can we."
Mei stepped forward, determination shining in her eyes. "Then we'll keep moving. We can't let him win."
Liang nodded, the weight of the fragment heavy in his hand. The road ahead would be fraught with danger, but he wasn't alone. Together, they would face whatever challenges lay ahead.
As the dust settled, Liang felt a renewed sense of purpose. The Azure Bloom pulsed faintly, a silent promise that their journey was far from over.
