Chapter 29: Whispers in the Wind
The night was cold and still as Liang, Mei, and Yuan trudged through the darkened forest. The skirmish with Chen Yan's scouts had left their nerves frayed, but there was no time to rest. The wind whispered through the trees, carrying with it the faint sounds of distant movement—footsteps, perhaps, or the rustling of cloaks against foliage.
Liang glanced over his shoulder, half-expecting another ambush, but the Azure Bloom remained silent. The calm in his interface was almost unnerving.
"Anything from the Bloom?" Mei asked, her voice low.
"Nothing yet," Liang replied. "But I don't trust it. They were too easy to beat."
Yuan, walking a few paces ahead, paused and turned to face them. His expression was as unreadable as ever, but there was a slight furrow in his brow. "You're right to be cautious. That wasn't Chen Yan's main force. He's testing us."
"Testing us for what?" Mei asked.
"To see how strong we are," Yuan said. "To measure our capabilities before he sends his elites."
Liang's stomach tightened at the thought. The encounter with the scouts had been taxing enough; he wasn't sure how they'd fare against a larger, more coordinated assault.
"So, what do we do?" Liang asked.
"We keep moving," Yuan said firmly. "We can't afford to be cornered. If we stay ahead of them, we might have a chance to turn the tables."
The group pushed on through the night, navigating the uneven terrain with practiced ease. Liang's legs burned with every step, but he forced himself to keep up. The Azure Bloom's interface flickered periodically, scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger.
"Energy fluctuations detected. Hostile presence unlikely."
Liang frowned. "The Bloom's picking up something. No hostiles, but there's definitely energy nearby."
Yuan slowed his pace, his eyes narrowing. "Where?"
Liang pointed to the east, where the forest grew denser and the shadows deeper. "Over there. It's faint, but it's consistent."
Mei sighed. "More strange energy? Let me guess—it's another relic or some ancient artifact waiting to explode."
"Or it could be a chance to learn something useful," Yuan said. "We should investigate."
Mei groaned but didn't argue. Liang couldn't tell if her frustration was genuine or just a way to mask her own unease.
The source of the energy turned out to be a grove of ancient trees, their gnarled roots twisting together like the threads of an intricate tapestry. At the grove's center stood a small stone altar, overgrown with moss and lichen. A faint blue light emanated from a crystal orb resting atop the altar, its glow pulsing softly like a heartbeat.
"What is that?" Mei asked, her voice hushed.
Liang approached cautiously, the Azure Bloom chiming as he neared the altar.
"Analyzing object… Energy signature consistent with spatial manipulation artifacts. Potential uses include teleportation and dimensional storage."
"Teleportation?" Liang repeated, his mind racing. "This could be huge."
"Or it could be a trap," Yuan said. "Artifacts like this are often left as bait to lure in unsuspecting cultivators."
Liang hesitated, torn between his curiosity and Yuan's warning. The Azure Bloom had proven reliable in the past, but there was no guarantee this orb would be any different.
"Azure Bloom," Liang murmured. "Is it safe to interact with the orb?"
"Direct interaction not recommended. Use spirit energy to establish a controlled connection."
Liang relayed the information to Yuan and Mei, who both nodded in agreement. Yuan stepped forward, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword as he watched for any signs of danger.
"Go ahead," Yuan said. "But be quick about it."
Taking a deep breath, Liang extended his hand toward the orb, channeling a small amount of spirit energy into his palm. The blue light grew brighter, and a faint hum filled the air. For a moment, nothing happened. Then the orb emitted a soft, melodic chime, and an image appeared in the air above it—a glowing map of the surrounding area.
The map was intricately detailed, showing not only the forest but also the hills, valleys, and rivers stretching out for miles in every direction. A series of glowing red dots marked various locations, with one of them pulsing steadily near their current position.
"What are those dots?" Mei asked, stepping closer to get a better look.
The Azure Bloom provided an answer almost immediately.
"Detected markers indicate points of interest: Spirit wells, relic sites, and hostile encampments."
Liang's eyes widened. "This isn't just a map—it's a guide to everything around us."
Yuan studied the map intently, his expression thoughtful. "If this is accurate, it could give us a significant advantage. But we can't rely on it blindly. We'll need to confirm the information as we go."
"Still," Mei said, "if it shows us where Chen Yan's men are camped, we could avoid them—or ambush them."
Liang nodded. "It's worth the risk. Let's take it with us."
As he reached for the orb, the light flickered, and a deep, resonant voice echoed through the grove.
"Only those deemed worthy may claim the Eye of Eternity. Prove your resolve, or face judgment."
Liang froze, his hand hovering over the orb. "Uh… guys?"
The ground beneath them began to shake, and the trees around the grove seemed to come alive, their branches twisting and stretching toward the intruders. From the shadows emerged three massive figures, each resembling a humanoid tree with glowing blue eyes and bark-like armor.
"Well," Mei said, drawing her blade. "Looks like we're proving our resolve."
The first guardian lunged at Liang, its massive arm swinging down like a falling tree. He dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack, and countered with a blast of spirit energy. The force struck the creature's chest, but it barely flinched.
"Great," Liang muttered. "These things are tough."
Mei darted in, her sword slicing through one of the creature's arms with precision. The severed limb fell to the ground, but the guardian seemed unfazed, its glowing eyes locking onto her as it prepared to strike again.
"Liang!" Mei shouted. "Any tips from the Bloom?"
Liang activated the Azure Bloom's analysis function, his vision overlaying with a glowing diagram of the guardians.
"Weak points detected: Core located at the base of the spine. Target with high-intensity attacks for maximum effectiveness."
"Go for the spine!" Liang called, relaying the information.
Yuan nodded, leaping onto one of the guardians and driving his blade into its back. The creature let out a low, guttural roar before collapsing, its glowing eyes dimming as its body disintegrated into dust.
Mei followed suit, using her agility to outmaneuver her opponent and strike its core with a well-placed arrow. The second guardian fell, leaving only one remaining.
Liang squared off against the final creature, his dagger glowing with spirit energy. The guardian swung at him with both arms, forcing him to duck and weave to avoid its powerful strikes.
"Come on," Liang muttered, channeling his energy into a single, focused blast. "Let's see how you like this."
He leaped forward, driving his dagger into the guardian's back with all his strength. The blade pierced the core, and the creature let out a final, echoing roar before crumbling to the ground.
As the dust settled, the orb's light grew steady once more, and the voice returned.
"You have proven your worth. The Eye of Eternity is yours to command."
Liang picked up the orb, its surface cool and smooth in his hand. The map reappeared, this time showing their precise location and a glowing path leading to their next destination.
"Looks like we've got our guide," Liang said, a small smile tugging at his lips.
Yuan nodded, his expression approving. "Let's make it count."
As they left the grove, Liang couldn't shake the feeling that their victory had come at a cost. The whispering wind carried with it the promise of greater challenges ahead—and the unyielding eyes of an enemy who wouldn't stop until they were found.
