Whispers of the Unknown Realm

Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Aeryn’s Secret

The new passage was brighter than the last, a welcome change after the oppressive darkness of the cavern. Kira's steps echoed softly as she moved forward, her mind replaying the shadowy figure's words. Every light casts a shadow. She couldn't shake the feeling that those whispers were more than just a test—they felt like a warning.

As the corridor opened into a wide chamber, Kira was surprised to find Aeryn waiting for her. He leaned casually against a wall, arms crossed, but there was tension in his stance that didn't match his usual confidence.

"You're back," he said, his voice steady but his gaze sharp. "How did it go?"

Kira hesitated. "It was… different. I saw things. Things I don't want to see again."

Aeryn studied her, his expression unreadable. "The trials are meant to push you. But they don't define you. Remember that."

She nodded, grateful for his reassurance. But something about his tone made her pause. "What about you? Why are you here?"

"I've been waiting," he said, his voice a little too quick. "Thought you might need backup."

Kira frowned. Aeryn was always supportive, but he'd stayed behind during her other trials, claiming they were hers alone to face. "Waiting for me? Or something else?"

Aeryn sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Look, there's something I need to tell you. Something I probably should've said earlier."

Kira's heart skipped. "What is it?"

He straightened, his usual smirk replaced by a serious expression. "I didn't just stumble onto this journey with you, Kira. I've been following the Heartstone's trail for a long time—long before we met."

She blinked, caught off guard. "You… what? Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because it didn't seem important at first," he said quickly. "But now… it's different. You're not the only one connected to the Heartstone. It's been calling to me too, in its own way."

Kira's mind raced, trying to piece his words together. "What do you mean? Are you saying you're like me?"

"Not exactly," Aeryn admitted, stepping closer. "I don't have its power, but I've been drawn to it for as long as I can remember. My family… they were part of an old order that guarded its secrets. When the Corruptors first appeared, they were among the first to fall."

Kira's chest tightened. "Aeryn, I didn't know…"

He waved her sympathy away. "I didn't tell you because it's not just my past. The Corruptors didn't just kill my family—they corrupted them. Some of them are out there now, twisted by darkness. And if we fail, if you fail, I'll lose what's left of them forever."

Kira stared at him, the weight of his words settling over her. She had known Aeryn carried his own burdens, but she hadn't realized how deeply they tied him to her mission.

"That's why you're here," she said softly. "Not just to help me, but to stop them."

He nodded. "This fight isn't just yours, Kira. It's mine too. And if we're going to win, we have to trust each other completely. No more secrets."

Kira held his gaze, the sincerity in his eyes grounding her. For all the doubts and fears swirling in her mind, she knew one thing for sure—she couldn't do this alone.

"I trust you," she said finally. "And I'm glad you're here, Aeryn. Whatever happens, we'll face it together."

For the first time in what felt like ages, Aeryn smiled—a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes. "Together," he agreed.

The moment didn't last long. The chamber began to tremble, and a new doorway appeared, its frame crackling with energy.

Aeryn's expression hardened. "Looks like the next trial isn't going to wait."

Kira nodded, steeling herself. With Aeryn by her side, she stepped toward the door, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
