Whispers Of Your Heart

"If this is a joke, it's really not funny," said Shen Ziqi as he stared at Qin Kai with a serious expression on his face. The possibility in his head was too bizarre and he did not want to even consider it for a moment. "You really don't know who I am?"

Qin Kai slowly shook his head but felt dizzy from this slight moment so he stopped and rubbed his temple slowly to ease the discomfort. 

Shen Ziqi thought of something and straightened up, "I am your boss. What kind of an irresponsible employee are you? You not only drove away the car on your own but also got my car into an accident."

[Anyway, if you have really lost your memory then it's good to fool you a little.]

Qin Kai watched his performance without changing his expression and only spoke when Shen Ziqi was done. "Are you done lying? If you are, you can explain the real situation to me now."

Shen Ziqi gave him a look, "So, you are joking?"

"No," answered Qin Kai with a blank look in his eyes. "In my half-unconscious state, I heard the doctor call you Assistant Shen and you were talking about when President Qin would wake up. Seeing how I am the only person in this ward, I believe that the President Qin you guys spoke of is me."

Shen Ziqi gaped at him in disbelief before giving him a thumbs-up, "Indeed. You are the boss. Glad to know that you have only lost your memory but your intelligence is still intact. That's a relief." He even exaggeratedly patted his chest. Seeing how Qin Kai was still waiting for his explanation, he added, "I am Shen Ziqi. I'm not only your college classmate, but I am also working as your executive assistant. You are President Qin Kai of the Qin Cooperation. Does it ring a bell?"

"No," answered Qin Kai as he continued to rub his temple. He tried to remember but a sharp pain in his head did not allow him to think deeply. All the memories in his brain were fuzzy and were making his head spin now. 

"You are really not kidding?" inquired Shen Ziqi once again. He really could not come to term that President Qin had amnesia after this accident. If this was true, they were gonna be in deep trouble.

"I won't joke about something like this," said Qin Kai.

Shen Ziqi also nodded in agreement, "Indeed. You would never make such a joke. But..." He pursed his lip in thought. "Let me get the doctor first."

Shen Ziqi arranged for Qin Kai to go through another brain scan but the result was the same. He had nothing wrong with him. But it also didn't look like Qin Kai was lying then where did the problem lie?

"A human brain is complicated and it's often difficult to understand. But you don't need to worry. Maybe, President Qin's mind is a little disoriented after the accident. Give him some time and he'll recover."

"How long?" asked Qin Kai.

The doctor hesitated but still answered truthfully, "It's possible that you'd recover your memory tomorrow, or in a week, or even in a month. The worst-case scenario is you might never recover your memory. But the odds are too low for that. Let's not be pessimistic now."

Suddenly, Shen Ziqi received a call and his expression changed. He first looked at the doctor and said sternly, "Doctor, I don't think I need to remind you about the patient and doctor's privacy. If anyone knew about President Qin's condition, you..."

The doctor interrupted him, "You need to tell me this, Assistant Shen. I know what to do."

Shen Ziqi turned to Qin Kai and said, "I had blocked the news of your accident as soon as possible and it had been under wraps for the past two days too. But I don't know who informed your mother about your accident. She is on her way to the hospital to see you." Then he took his phone and searched for something before showing the screen to him, "Look at the photo carefully, that's your mother, Chairwoman of the Qin Cooperation, Madam Lin Lan."

Qin Kai took the phone from him and stared at the photo, he thought he might remember something but apart from feeling slight familiarity, he felt nothing else. "We are not telling her about my condition."

"No," answered Shen Ziqi without any hesitation. "Let's just say that you don't have the best of a relationship with your mother."

"Why?"

"What why? I am not too clear about the details too. I just know that you both have an awkward relationship. You both have cold personalities and both don't like to talk either. So, the relationship seems distant and strained."

"How should I behave then?"

"Just stay quiet and answer what she asks in a few words. Anyway, you can get away with it."

It didn't take long before a middle-aged woman strode into the private ward dressed in an elegant navy blue suit. She looked like a capable, professional woman with minute signs of aging. Her face was cold as Shen Ziqi had said. She walked to the side of the bed and looked at Qin Kai. Before she asked anything, Qin Kai could already hear her thoughts.

[So pale? Is he badly injured? And why is he looking thinner than the last time we saw each other? I shouldn't have sent him to the temple to get my prayer beads.]

Qin Kai could clearly hear her concern and worry in his thoughts but when she spoke, her voice was cold and sounded even distant, "How are you doing? How did you get into an accident? Why did you send the driver back and drove yourself? There is contract signing press conference with the Hai Group next week. How are you going preside it in your condition? Can you be more responsible?"

Hearing all this, Qin Kai had to even wonder if the care he heard from her thoughts was just an illusion but since he had been observing her expressions closely, he had already noticed the flash of worry in her eyes, so he had to accept that perhaps, his mother had been speaking in such a way for so long that she had forgotten how to express her real thoughts.

"I'm fine. The injuries are minor too. The doctor said I'd be discharged tomorrow. There is nothing serious," answered Qin Kai patiently which surprised Madam Lin Lan who wasn't used to her son speaking in such a manner.
