Chapter 236: Chapter 236: Luring the Snake Out of the Cave
"Going against them is dangerous. Why do you think I would help you, Director He Kui?" Matthias elegantly picked up his teacup and took a delicate sip.
"Because your expression shows a clear disdain for that organization."
"..."
Matthias froze, his refined composure momentarily shaken as he instinctively touched his face. He prided himself on his calm demeanor, believing his expressions were well under control. Yet, He Kui had hit the mark.
It wasn't as if he displayed his emotions openly, but He Kui had somehow managed to read him correctly. Could it be that He Kui was unusually perceptive? The thought made Matthias wary, taking note of He Kui's keen awareness. Recovering his calm, Matthias resumed his composed demeanor.
"I do have some knowledge of their movements within ZAFT," he admitted.
"Here," said Sitona, handing He Kui a tablet.
It displayed a map of May City, marking various locations in several districts.
"This information is for you alone, Director He Kui. How you choose to use it is up to you," Matthias added, his expression unreadable.
"I understand."
It seemed this was a test from Matthias, a trial to see how He Kui would handle the situation and if he could discreetly eliminate the spies. It fit Matthias's preference for covert operations.
Memorizing the information on the tablet, He Kui returned it to Sitona. His fingers brushed against her soft hand, and she quickly pulled back, blushing, though not appearing displeased. With a smile, He Kui noted the positive effect of her 60-point favorability.
Armed with Matthias's information, He Kui swiftly returned to May City, where the frame strength test had passed even in his absence.
"Thank you for your hard work, Director He Kui."
Once again, Councilor Zala's cool face appeared on He Kui's office screen.
"It's part of my duty," He Kui responded humbly.
"Hmm. For the subsequent armor installation, will you use the PS armor?"
"But with the development of your new armor concept, wouldn't the next generation VPS armor be more suitable?"
"While that's true, VPS armor is still in the early stages of development," He Kui said with a smile. The VPS armor was an advancement he had made, building upon the TP armor technology.
At this point, his research capabilities could operate independently of his "cheat" knowledge. As long as it wasn't a leap in technology, he could achieve new advancements and even create new mobile suits. The knowledge he had gained remained firmly imprinted in his mind, allowing him to refine and innovate on existing technology.
"There's no rush; we can switch it out in the future."
"If you say so, Director He Kui, I'll leave the continued development in your hands," Zala said, offering a rare smile.
"Thank you for your trust."
After the call ended, He Kui considered the armor design, which was straightforward enough. The team had detailed schematics, so all he had to do was create a conventional, Strike-like exterior design.
The armaments weren't essential for this suit. It was more of a testbed for future modular units, verifying technology and reducing costs rather than focusing on combat capabilities.
Before he knew it, the day was drawing to a close. He Kui returned to his new home in the director's district. As a full-fledged director, he was provided with upgraded accommodations — a small estate complete with a pond, a swimming pool, and a four-story villa. Although it couldn't compete with the Clyne family's grandeur, it was luxurious in its own right.
As soon as He Kui opened the door, the delicious aroma of cooked meat greeted him. In the kitchen, Shi He and Meyrin were busy, but they stepped out as he entered.
"I heard the new Gundam frame next door is huge, much bigger than the average Gundam," Su Lei commented as a greeting.
She was likely referring to the "Rebirth." He Kui remembered it, though it hadn't appeared much in the story.
"You can go see it if you'd like," he replied.
"That's not what I meant. When can we go back home?" Shi He asked, clearly missing the asteroid base. It was well-equipped, private, and overall an ideal place to live, much safer as well.
"Not just yet. We'll need to stay here a bit longer."
The Gundam was nearly complete, and although it didn't yet require its pack, he wanted to see it fully finished. He also needed to root out the spies within ZAFT and solidify his alliance with Matthias.
"Sorry about that."
With a smooth move, he leaned in and kissed Shi He on her soft lips, savoring the familiar sweetness. She blushed, breathless, while Meyrin watched, momentarily stunned.
Before Shi He could react, Su Lei, pouting, stood on her tiptoes and kissed him, her dissatisfaction evident.
"Don't get carried away!" Shi He shot He Kui a playful glare as he nearly got knocked over by Meyrin's enthusiasm.
"Alright, alright."
Gently, he disengaged from Su Lei's grasp.
"Let's eat."
"Fine."
Su Lei licked her lips, looking like a satisfied cat. Her competitive spirit always showed itself in peculiar ways, though He Kui didn't mind.
After an intimate evening, He Kui quietly released a pitch-black owl drone into the night before dawn broke. His previous owl drone had been too conspicuous, and most people in the area knew it was his handiwork. This new model featured synthetic fiber feathers, giving it a lifelike appearance.
Equipped with a quantum firewall and radar-absorbing coating, it could evade PLANT's internal radar detection. From a distance, it was hard to tell if it was mechanical or a real bird, making it perfect for nighttime surveillance.
Luring the spies in May City out would be straightforward enough.
The black-feathered owl flew through the night, landing on the rooftop of one of the locations Matthias had flagged. The hideout was tucked away in the densely populated residential area — a place He Kui had lived in once.
Although the exact building was different, the standard layout and cramped living conditions were the same. It was an ideal spot for hiding in plain sight. He Kui admired how Matthias had pinpointed it. For someone with roots in the Blue Cosmos, his ability to identify his agents was impressive.
He Kui guided the owl to the bed within the room. The cramped apartment had no balcony, only a small dormitory with a six-person bunk bed setup. Of the six, two were identified as Blue Cosmos agents.
Using the owl's sharp talons, He Kui carefully drilled a small hole into the glass. He then left a note with a threatening message for the inhabitants, intending to unsettle them and spur them into action.
Once the task was complete, He Kui had the owl hide in the bushes below.
While he could have encrypted the information using the quantum firewall to report directly to ZAFT, encryption always carried the risk of decryption.
