Chapter 8: Trust
The two of them made their way to a secluded spot near the outskirts of campus. It wasn't the best hiding place, but it would have to do for now. They sat in silence for a few moments, trying to catch their breath.
Jake's thoughts were in chaos. Everything was happening so fast. The villains, his new powers, Lucy's sudden involvement—it was all too much.
"Why are you helping me?" Jake finally asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Lucy met his gaze, her expression soft but firm. "Because you don't have to face this alone, Jake. You're not just some random guy who got caught up in something he didn't understand. You're... more than that. And I think I can help you understand what's happening to you."
Jake swallowed. "I don't even understand it myself."
"I know," Lucy said with a knowing look. "But we'll figure it out. Together."
Jake felt something stir inside him—a warmth, a spark of hope he hadn't allowed himself to feel in a long time. He had been running from the idea of becoming something bigger, something more than just the quiet, invisible guy on campus. But maybe, just maybe, this wasn't something to run from.
"Okay," he said, his voice more certain than before. "Let's figure this out."
