Chapter 21: The Sun
For humans, the Sun is incredibly familiar. Since ancient times, humans have lived under the warm light of the Sun. Thanks to the Sun, life thrives, sight is possible, and people are safe from the deep darkness of the night. For this reason, humans have praised, adored, and even worshipped the Sun.
Humans trust the Sun so deeply that they never question it. There are countless theories about the Sun, yet no one has ever suspected that the Sun might possess its own consciousness—that the Sun could be a living being!
Nobita couldn't believe what he had just heard. "The Sun has its own consciousness?"
Kelly and Karen remained silent, unable to respond. Even though Doraemon had confirmed it, they still found it hard to accept. Doraemon also refrained from commenting further, instead focusing on gathering more data.
Seeing everyone's silence, Nobita became increasingly uneasy. He looked up at the sky where the Sun hung quietly above, seemingly staring back at him. Previously, he had felt nothing unusual, but now, all he felt was a chilling unease. What once felt like warmth now sent a chill down his spine.
"The temperature on the surface of that black spot has dropped further; it's now at -300°C. The black spot is continuously affecting the Sun's natural fusion and fission reactions. If this continues, the Sun won't even need the spot to spread across its entire surface—its surface will cool to the point that the Sun itself will disappear within seconds, turning into a gaseous state. Currently, the Sun is struggling to suppress the black spot, which is why its expansion has slowed. However, if this struggle continues, a massive magnetic storm will erupt in two days. Although smaller storms have already reached Earth, the one in two days will be far more catastrophic," Doraemon said as he studied the data on his tablet, frowning.
"That's also the day when the robots turn on humans. It seems clear that the Sun is indeed the cause, but why, even while struggling against that black spot, would the Sun still want to destroy humanity?" Karen voiced her doubt.
"Why does everyone hate humans so much?" Kelly said in frustration. "The Përjetësia was bad enough, and now even the Sun."
Nobita still couldn't believe what he was hearing. He gestured wildly, exclaiming, "That's impossible! If the Sun is alive, why doesn't it move or speak?"
"Nobita," Doraemon explained patiently, "Living beings can exist in many forms. You don't have to look far—on Earth, coral doesn't move or have language, yet it's still a living organism. If such things exist on Earth, it's not strange to find lifeforms in the vast universe that differ from others."
Nobita stood still, stunned. The concept of life was indeed baffling.
Karen bit her thumb, unsure of what to do. "What should we do now? If the Sun can interfere with Doraemon's gadgets, saving Earth—or even relocating—might be problematic..." Mid-sentence, Karen paused, realizing something. She looked at Doraemon. "Wait, could the Sun be the reason your Doomsday Machine isn't working?"
"That's a possibility," Doraemon nodded. The machine was located in the solar system, near Earth, so it could definitely be affected by the Sun.
"So, what should we do now?" Kelly let her arms fall in defeat, her tone weary.
"Gather more information!" Doraemon said decisively. Even though the Sun's electromagnetic waves could interfere with his gadgets, the impact was still limited. He could still use the wave emitter to trace the origin of the interference and collect detailed data using the tablet. With enough information, Doraemon was confident he could devise a countermeasure.
"Then let's head to my lab. I've kept Rim and Connie there. They're my assistants. Before joining me and Karen to work on the Time Machine, they spent over a decade studying the Sun. They might have some useful data!" Kelly suggested after a moment's thought.
Karen agreed. "Yeah, those two know a lot about the Sun. But in that case, we'll need to return to the year 2530."
Hearing those names, Nobita hesitated. "Connie and Rim... Are they the ones controlling the Jaian and Suneo puppets?"
"Eh? Yes, but how do you know that?" Kelly looked at Nobita in surprise.
"Nobita..." Karen glanced at him with concern.
"It's fine, I'm okay. I just have some things I want to say to them," Nobita replied after taking a deep breath, forcing a smile.
"Then let's all return to the year 2530!" Doraemon nodded and pointed at the Time Belt. "The signal to the Time Machine is still locked, but I'll check things first. If all's clear, I'll send a signal. When you see the belt flash green, press the yellow button next to the red one."
"Isn't that too dangerous?" Nobita asked anxiously.
"It'll be fine. If anything goes wrong, I'll just transport back to this era," Doraemon reassured him with a smile before activating the Time Belt and vanishing.
The trio watched the Time Belt nervously. Fortunately, it didn't take long before it began flashing green. They sighed in relief and quickly pressed the yellow button. They appeared inside the Time Machine and settled into their seats. Doraemon promptly set the destination year and, to be cautious, reminded everyone, "Stay alert. We don't know if we'll face interference in 2530. If anything happens, use the Time Belt immediately!"
"Got it!" The three raised their hands, giving Doraemon an "OK" gesture.
