Chapter 2:
Chapter 2: People Are Doing It, God Is Watching:
At the moment of Lin You’s death, he glimpsed the truth about his fate. He hadn’t died of illness but was poisoned. The poisoner was Lin Tianyang, who had drawn inspiration from the infamous thallium poisoning case of a Tsinghua University student. The [thallium] was provided by Lin Xuehong, his sixth sister.
Lin Xuehong was a pharmacist, and the Lin family had deep roots in the medical field. They owned several pharmaceutical factories and two Class A hospitals, making it easy for them to acquire such substances.
It turned out Lin Tianyang hadn’t been adopted by chance—he was chosen. And Lin You’s kidnapping years ago wasn’t an accident; it was orchestrated.
The Lin family’s supposed savior, their beloved adopted son Lin Tianyang, was actually their downfall. After gaining control of the Lin family, Lin Tianyang developed feelings for Lin You’s seventh sister, Su Li.
Yes, the story was that bizarre—his seventh sister had a different surname. Su Li already had a boyfriend, and her rejection of Lin Tianyang’s advances, along with the disapproval of her sisters, created tension. Even Lin Yuan and Lan Lin criticized Lin Tianyang and began threatening to reclaim the Lin family shares he held.
Faced with this opposition, Lin Tianyang devised a plan to eliminate all seven sisters and Lin Yuan. Lan Lin eventually uncovered the truth and was filled with regret for raising a venomous snake, but it was too late—Lin Tianyang killed her as well.
This was the tragic ending that Lin You saw before his own death.
…
Lin You’s silence upstairs was met with Lin Shiyan’s furious voice.
“Lin You, if you don’t come up now, don’t blame me for putting justice above family and sending you to the police!”
Lin Shiyan, a lawyer with strong connections in the legal system, wasn’t making empty threats. If she said she could send Lin You to the police, she could—and would—do it.
The incident started with the swimming pool in the Lin family’s yard. Lin You had never swum in it because the family felt he was too dirty to use it. That day, Lin Tianyang was about to change into his swimsuit for a swim when Lin You returned from school. As Lin You approached, Lin Tianyang slipped and fell into the pool.
Despite being a swimmer, Lin Tianyang panicked and called for help. Lan Lin heard his cries but didn’t dare jump in. Fortunately, Lin Shiyan and their eldest sister, Lin Yaoyao, were home. They quickly called for Lao Qin, who rescued Lin Tianyang just in time.
Seeing Lin Tianyang’s pale face, Lan Lin, Lin Shiyan, and Lin Yaoyao were overcome with concern.
Lin Shiyan, ever the problem-solver, gently held Tianyang’s head. “Don’t scare us, Tianyang. Tell me what happened.”
Lan Lin clutched his hand with tears in her eyes. “It’s my fault. I should have taken better care of you. Don’t be afraid, Yangyang.”
Tianyang, looking pale and shaken, coughed up water and said in an apologetic tone, “Mom, sisters, I’m fine. Please don’t blame me. I didn’t mean to…”
This led to Lin Shiyan’s outburst at Lin You.
The Lin family’s villa had five floors, plus a basement, where Lin You’s room was located. Though the house had more than twenty rooms, Lin You lived in the basement alongside the servants.
Ignoring Lin Shiyan’s threats, Lin You calmly tidied up his room, folding his quilt and clothes neatly into his schoolbag. He knew Lin Yuan would return soon, furious and ready to scold him. If Lin You didn’t show a submissive attitude, he’d likely face a beating.
In his previous life, Lin You hadn’t feared beatings. What he dreaded most was being kicked out of the family. He had clung to the belief that with enough effort, the Lin family would eventually accept him. Blood is thicker than water, after all—or so he thought.
He yearned to belong, to tell his classmates that he, too, had parents and even sisters. He wanted to escape the identity of an orphan.
Yet in his previous life, when Lin Yuan had threatened to kick him out, Lin You had begged—even pleaded with Lin Tianyang—to intervene. Lin Yuan had relented, saying, [If you mess up again, you can die outside. Don’t come back. Our Lin family doesn’t need someone like you.]
This time, Lin You thought coldly, he would grant their wish.
Hearing the sound of Lin Yuan’s car entering the yard, Lin You shouldered his bag and limped from the basement to the first floor. Though the villa had an elevator, Lin You avoided it after an incident when his fifth sister, Lin Yaoyao, had ordered the servant to spray perfume in the elevator right in front of him. From that day on, Lin You never used it again.
Passing Lin Shiyan with a calm, cold expression, Lin You walked toward the living room. His indifference unsettled Lin Shiyan.
Was this still the same meek and obedient Lin You?
“Lin You, stop right there!” Lin Shiyan called after him.
“People are doing it, and God is watching,” she said sharply. “How could you be so malicious? Why would you push Tianyang into the pool? Don’t you know he could have drowned?”
She sneered, “If you don’t show some remorse today, you’ll face serious consequences. Who knows, maybe next you’ll poison Tianyang!”
Lin You turned to her and replied evenly, “Second sister, I believe in that saying too. People are doing it, and God is watching. If God doesn’t act immediately, it’s because He’s waiting to settle the score later.”
“Don’t call me your second sister,” Lin Shiyan retorted angrily. “I don’t have a heartless brother like you. Tianyang saved my life. I won’t allow anyone to harm him—not even you.”
“Have we ever treated you poorly?” she continued. “You’ve had food to eat, clothes to wear. What more do you want?”
Lin You sneered. “Ms. Lin, I appreciate the Lin family for not starving me to death these past four years. If you consider that charity, I’ll accept it. Every meal I’ve eaten and every cent I’ve spent here—I remember it all. Don’t worry. I’ll pay it back.”
At that moment, their eldest sister, Lin Xiaotong, entered the room and overheard the conversation.
“Lin You, how dare you speak to your second sister like that?” Lin Xiaotong said sternly. “Calling her ‘Ms. Lin’? Is that how you address family?”
She frowned and continued, “Have we not cared for you enough over the past four years? And now you repay us with malice by trying to kill Tianyang?”
“If we’ve overlooked your flaws, it’s because we cared. But if this is how you repay us, I’d rather not have a brother like you. You’re like a tiger we’ve raised, ready to turn on us. If you can push Tianyang into the pool today, who’s to say you won’t harm me tomorrow?”
“If you don’t show remorse for this, you’ll regret it.”
Lin You stood silently, observing how both sisters seemed to echo the same sentiment. They demanded accountability, but only on their terms.
