Apocalypse Survival: Starting with a Shelter

Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Scouting and Deliveries

After freshening up and having a quick reheated breakfast, Su Wu took the elevator to the fourth underground level.

The lack of direct connection to the shelter's central air conditioning made the air on this level humid and warm.

Within seconds, Su Wu felt discomfort and didn't try to endure it. After a quick inspection to confirm nothing was overlooked, he used survival points to solidify the fourth level.

The once-loose walls made of construction debris hardened into a sturdy structure, officially completing the fourth underground level.

All the construction robots from this level, except for two left behind for interior finishing, were redirected to remove temporary supports and start excavation for the fifth underground level.

Having completed his task, Su Wu quickly returned to the second-floor control center, avoiding prolonged exposure to the uncomfortable conditions.

Today, he had to prepare for the delivery of around 650 pounds of fresh lettuce to eight different shelters, as agreed in the official chat channel two days earlier.

This would not be an easy task, especially with the large cargo truck already engaged in scavenging operations in the city and competing with other shelters. Efficient planning was essential to ensure timely deliveries.

Looking at the weather conditions on the surface, the thick clouds overhead still shrouded the sky, but there was enough daylight for safe travel.

Su Wu deployed a reconnaissance drone squad, which ascended through the drone platform of the small fortress and into the sky.

"Average wind speed: 5.5 m/s, temperature: 72.3°C."

"Flight conditions: stable."

The drone squad circled above the shelter, scanning the surrounding environment for safety before beginning its pre-planned reconnaissance route to inspect the delivery targets, starting with the closest.

Soon, high-resolution aerial images were transmitted back, and the AI processed the data to produce an exceptionally detailed 3D map.

After studying the map, Su Wu noted that five of the shelters had clear pathways to their entrances, allowing the large cargo truck to drive directly to their doors. The remaining three, however, posed challenges, with one requiring traversal through a 500-600 meter stretch of debris.

"In that case, it's best to split the deliveries into two batches."

Su Wu quickly formulated a plan. He messaged all eight shelters to coordinate delivery methods and times.

For the first five shelters with clear paths, the cargo truck would make direct deliveries, likely completing them in half an hour if all went smoothly.

For the remaining three, the cargo truck would deliver the produce to the nearest accessible point. From there, the K2-series agricultural drones, equipped with special insulated containers, would handle aerial transportation to the final destinations.

This secondary delivery step would require precise coordination and additional effort, particularly during loading and unloading, which would undoubtedly present challenges.

However, Su Wu had no other options. He hadn't anticipated the intense competition in scavenging operations, leaving him reluctant to divert resources to clear additional roads.

"Let's set the delivery time for around 4 PM. By then, the CNC machine should also be nearing completion. Additionally, I'll need two hours before the delivery to harvest and package the lettuce leaves from the hydroponic farm."

After coordinating with the buyers, Su Wu organized his tasks for the day.

By the time he finished, nearly half the screen was filled with pending to-do items, and over an hour had passed.

"This is such a time sink."

Rubbing his temples in frustration, Su Wu realized this approach wasn't sustainable. As his vegetable output increased and his future livestock farming operations began, he couldn't spend all his time acting as a customer service representative and logistics coordinator.

"Maybe I should find someone to help."

The thought crossed his mind but was quickly dismissed. Trusting an outsider to access his shelter without sufficient safeguards wasn't a wise decision.

With the deliveries sorted, Su Wu turned his attention to the city scavenging team.

By now, the two construction robots he had dispatched earlier had joined the two special transport vehicles in the urban area. After switching to a more aggressive strategy of cutting through entangled debris, their efficiency in collecting scrap metal had significantly improved.

In five hours, they were expected to bring back a load of about ten tons, consisting mainly of household appliances and car wrecks.

"That's more than enough."

Satisfied with their progress, Su Wu estimated a daily haul of 50 to 60 tons of metal—an impressive yield, especially considering it was all essentially free.

With a few hours left before noon, Su Wu logged into his newly established internet and played a quick online game with a few other users.

Despite the network being new with limited online users, there were already dedicated gaming enthusiasts among them, some of whom had been online for nearly 20 consecutive hours. Finding opponents wasn't difficult.

By 4 PM, it was time for the deliveries.

Fresh lettuce leaves were harvested and packed by the hydroponic farm's robots, weighed, and sealed in insulated containers. These were loaded into the cargo truck, which had arrived punctually.

Su Wu recorded a short video of the harvesting and loading process and posted it in the official chat channel, informing the buyers to prepare for the handover.

"Your underground farm is massive. The daily yield will definitely exceed 70 pounds in the future," remarked Wang Jianguo, seeing the hydroponic farm for the first time through the video.

The dense, forest-like rows of vegetables left him in awe.

Maintaining such a large-scale vegetable production base would require enormous power consumption, far beyond the capacity of many small or medium-sized shelters.
