Apocalypse Survival: Starting with a Shelter

Chapter 93: Chapter 93: The Great Earthquake

At the moment the earthquake struck, chaos engulfed this massive shelter, home to fifty or sixty thousand people.

A wave of indescribable fear and panic spread like a plague, taking hold of every corner of the shelter.

The director of the shelter, Wu Hong'an, a former billionaire and a commercial magnate of Jianghe City, screamed desperately, summoning his security team to protect him.

But in the face of nature's overwhelming power, their weapons were useless.

There was no enemy to fight—only the walls, floors, and ceilings of the shelter itself, which had suddenly turned against them.

The reinforced walls, made of specialized alloys and several meters thick, groaned and creaked ominously.

Then, without warning, they twisted, deformed, and ultimately shattered under the strain.

A deluge of debris, soil, and rubble cascaded into the shelter like a flood, burying everything in its path within seconds.

While smaller shelters were obliterated outright, Hongtu Shelter's massive size allowed it a momentary reprieve.

Even though parts of the structure collapsed and Wu Hong'an disappeared amidst the destruction, many residents found temporary refuge in isolated pockets of the shelter.

But this was no blessing—it merely delayed their inevitable demise.

The ongoing earthquake tore through the layers of soil and rock above, exposing the shelter's interiors to the scorching heat and radiation of the surface.

With the power generators, air circulation, and central cooling systems destroyed, the remaining intact sections of the shelter quickly became unbearable.

The temperature soared to deadly levels, turning the once safe haven into a fiery furnace.

Tens of thousands of people cried, screamed, and pleaded for salvation, but their voices were lost in the void.

No help would come.

As exhaustion overcame them, the survivors fell silent, one by one.

Eventually, the shelter was reduced to nothing but a lifeless tomb.

Occasional explosions from its ammunition and fuel stores were the only reminders of the vibrant underground city that once existed.

Thus, one of Su Wu's largest adversaries was erased before he could even enact his plans of vengeance.

17 Minutes After the Earthquake Began

The earthquake's devastation extended beyond the wilderness and urban areas, spreading toward Su Wu's shelter.

By now, the ground's rolling waves had subsided, but ominous fissures appeared intermittently, opening and closing with terrifying force.

Underground Level 2, Control Center

Su Wu sat before the control console, staring at the live feed from surveillance drones.

For the first time, he witnessed destruction on an unimaginable scale.

He had never thought it possible for the solid earth to ripple like the ocean, nor for skyscrapers, standing tall like monoliths, to sink into the ground within mere seconds.

In the face of such overwhelming natural power, humanity's efforts seemed utterly insignificant.

As he sat in stunned silence, a new alert appeared on the screen.

This time, it wasn't a yellow warning but a deep red alert.

The earthquake's epicenter had shifted directly to the area surrounding Su Wu's shelter.

Within seconds, the vibrations in the control center intensified dramatically.

The three-dimensional map of the shelter expanded to fill the screen, highlighting damaged sections in vivid red.

A deep rumble echoed through the facility.

On Underground Level 4, a one-meter-thick concrete wall cracked and crumbled like paper, exposing the steel reinforcements, metal panels, and insulation beneath.

> "Warning: Outer wall breach at Industrial Recycling Center. Radiation detected. Initiating containment protocols."

The situation grew dire as the shelter's structural integrity began to fail.

The control center's lights turned from white to red, flashing in sync with the alarms.

Accompanied by the tremors, the scene resembled the apocalypse.

"This place is no longer safe," Su Wu muttered.

He glanced at the damage report on the screen—20% of the shelter had been compromised.

Wasting no time, he made his way to the micro-mecha, its cockpit already open and waiting for him.

The ground beneath him trembled violently, causing loose items in the control center to bounce and scatter.

Losing his balance, Su Wu stumbled but managed to catch himself against the mecha's frame.

Climbing into the cockpit, he sealed the hatch.

Seconds later, the mecha's internal systems activated, and its life-support module began to hum softly.

Suddenly, the cacophony of the outside world—the roaring quakes and collapsing debris—faded into silence.

For a moment, Su Wu felt as if he had escaped the disaster entirely.

But as his eyes fell on a water cup tumbling across the control room floor, he was reminded that the catastrophe was still very real.

It was just that a layer of reinforced armor now stood between him and the chaos.

> "Remaining power: 100%"

Reassured by the mecha's fully charged energy reserves and the glowing blade of his thermal cutter, Su Wu's nerves began to settle.

Even if the shelter were to collapse entirely and sink into the earth, he was confident that he could carve his way back to the surface using the mecha.

With his immediate safety secured, Su Wu turned his attention to monitoring the situation outside.

The mecha's tactical computer filtered and transmitted the muffled sounds of the earthquake, allowing him to assess the scale of the destruction.

The world outside the cockpit was still trembling with the terrifying power of the quake, but for now, Su Wu had found a fragile island of calm amidst the storm.
