Apocalypse Survival: Starting with a Shelter

Chapter 94: Chapter 94: The True Beginning of the Apocalypse

Through the mech's synchronized display, Su Wu surveyed the control center, noting its relative intactness.

Aside from a rolling water cup and scattered small objects on the floor, the facility appeared unscathed.

The control console continued to operate flawlessly, collating and displaying information from every corner of the shelter.

As the shelter's command hub and Su Wu's most frequented space, the control center was the most secure location in the entire facility.

Without the micro-mech, this was originally designed to be his final refuge.

After a brief contemplation, Su Wu decided against leaving the control center in the mech to explore the rest of the shelter.

In these extraordinary circumstances, even with the mech's superior capabilities, recklessness was unwise.

Moreover, if his goal was to assess the situation inside and outside the shelter, there was no need to leave this room.

Su Wu connected the mech's tactical computer to the shelter's artificial intelligence system, temporarily designating the mech's cockpit as the command hub.

As the AI began to transmit real-time updates, lines of text scrolled across Su Wu's display:

Overall shelter damage: 21%.

Hydroponic farm: water pipes ruptured, temperature and lighting systems malfunctioning.

Fish pools in the aquaculture facility: structural cracks causing leaks.

Industrial recycling center: high-temperature furnace #2 severely deformed from external impact.

Ventilation system: partial disconnection of ducts, air purification efficiency reduced by 67%.

The reports painted a grim picture, but on closer inspection, the damages were manageable.

The most critical issue was the reduction in air purification efficiency, as compromised ventilation could lead to rapid air quality deterioration in certain areas, potentially causing respiratory distress.

Still, these were environmental issues, not structural threats to the shelter's integrity.

"Luck seems to be on my side," Su Wu thought.

"The shelter's sturdiness should hold up through this quake."

As this thought crossed his mind, the display briefly froze.

The previously smooth influx of damage reports slowed, with updates appearing only every few seconds.

The intensifying earthquake had begun to impair the AI's ability to monitor the shelter, as cameras and sensors across the facility failed one by one.

Even the AI's host device—a rugged laptop—showed signs of imminent shutdown.

Recognizing the situation, Su Wu disconnected from the AI and relied on the mech's tactical computer instead.

He also took direct control of the drones patrolling above the shelter.

Since internal updates were unreliable, he shifted his focus to the world outside.

The aerial drones revealed a landscape in turmoil.

The ground near the shelter no longer rippled with the earlier seismic waves, but the land remained far from stable.

At intervals, small hills sank abruptly or rose several meters in mere moments, hinting at violent subterranean collisions.

In the northern mountains, the tremors intensified.

Minutes later, deep within the mountain range, a nearly thousand-meter-high peak began to crumble.

Massive amounts of rock and soil cascaded downward, creating a dust storm that soared into the sky and spread across the horizon, blotting out the sun.

Moments later, a thunderous roar rolled through the mountains, drowning out even the earthquake's rumble.

Watching this scene unfold, Su Wu felt a profound sense of awe and helplessness.

Nature had demonstrated its overwhelming power in the most visceral way, reducing towering mountains to rubble.

As time passed, the tremors gradually subsided.

It was then that Su Wu received an unexpected system notification, uncharacteristically delivered outside the usual midnight settlement period:

[System Notification]

A forewarning disaster has descended.

The apocalypse has officially begun.

System update initiated. Estimated duration: 3 hours.

Su Wu stared at the notification, momentarily stunned.

"So… everything until now wasn't the apocalypse?"

"This is just the beginning?"

The system offered no answers to his questions.

Unable to make sense of the situation, Su Wu set the matter aside, deciding to revisit it after the update was complete.

Reconnecting to the AI, he resumed assessing the shelter's condition.

With the earthquake over, the AI quickly produced a new report:

Monitoring and sensor systems were operational in 56% of the shelter.

There were over 20 breaches in external walls, and more than 1,000 instances of damaged wiring and lighting fixtures.

The recycling center suffered the most severe damage, with radiation levels inside reaching a quarter of surface levels.

In the aquaculture facility, water leaks from cracked fish pools threatened to completely drain the tanks within 30 minutes.

"Everything's a mess," Su Wu muttered.

And this was only in areas where the AI could still provide data—nearly half the shelter remained unmonitored.

Nevertheless, the fact that the shelter had survived such a catastrophic quake relatively intact was a testament to its resilience.

There was no point dwelling on perfection.

"Let's take it one step at a time," Su Wu decided.

He reactivated two dormant engineering robots and 12 construction robots, forming a makeshift repair team.

Dividing them into three groups, he assigned urgent tasks:

1. Aquaculture Facility: Repair the fish pools immediately to prevent further leaks.

2. Recycling Center: Seal the breaches to halt the influx of surface radiation.

3. Core Systems: Address critical damage in the control and manufacturing centers on Underground Level 2.

These areas were vital to the shelter's continued survival, and any delays could prove disastrous.

Su Wu understood that restoring the shelter to its former state would take time and effort.

But for now, ensuring functionality and mitigating immediate threats were his top priorities.

Even in the face of this harrowing disaster, Su Wu remained calm, methodically working to rebuild what had been broken.

The apocalypse had only just begun, and the road ahead promised to be even more perilous.
