Chapter 41: Tournament
Making a tournament is not as easy as I had hoped, originally I was going to have it happen on the fiftieth floor but even if I teleported the participants up it would defeat the purpose of exploration of the tower. So instead I decided to make the tournament venue up on the eightieth floor where no one was then I would simply copy it to the first floor.
"How to make this look" I said to myself.
Starting off I made the ground white stone tiles in a large rectangular stadium adding in some pillars at each end.
"That doesn't feel right"
Breaking it down I started trying many different designs before I settled on something smaller shaped like a rectangle. The bottom layer I made out of a hard stone from the ninetieth floor, then topped it off with five feet of compacted dirt giving the ground a more natural feel. I placed some boulders and smaller rocks around the field as well.
"That should work, now what about the spectators. Simple bleachers wouldn't cut it"
Thinking for a bit I started with individual seats but that didn't seem right so I changed it to long benches for each section. I raised these all around the stadium so that it could fit about a thousand people if necessary. I placed the entrances on both far ends of the oval field, then above those I made some more luxurious boxes for me as well as a few other people. Finishing it off I added a deep reservoir of water all around the field so that waterbenders had access to an abundant amount of water. I then spent the next few hours finishing any minute details it needed.
"Alright that is it for those" I said as I made three more identical ones. "With the amount of likely participants and spectators I will need three fights going on at once"
Now it was time for the rewards. For the level one through nine brackets first place got some XP and a good piece of gear. Second Place got some gear., and third place got enough XP to level twice.
The level ten through nineteen brackets, first place got a skill, XP, and gear. Second place just got a skill, while third got gear as well as XP.
Now the next bracket is where it gets more interesting. For the twenty through twenty nine bracket first place got a class change stone, unfortunately for them this wasn't the same one as the secret quest, this one allowed you to change your class losing all abilities related specifically to it except for one of their choice first place also got a full set of armor as well as XP. Second place got a full set of armor, a weapon and some XP. Third place got either a weapon or armor; their choice; and XP. Of course, all of these rewards were suitable for their level and class.
The previous three brackets would be happening simultaneously in the three stadiums. The thirty and up bracket would be happening in a sized up stadium after the others have competed to allow any newly leveled people to sign up. For this bracket first place would have two options: a familiar or a unique skill to their request; within reason; as well as enough XP to level them. Second place gets XP of course as well as a skill from another class of their choice. Third place simply got a good set of armor and a basic skill from a beginner class.
Anything lower than third place got some random piece of equipment or some general amount of XP.
"That should do for now, unfortunately for Ozai I won't actually release the information on the rewards as they might change".
Teleporting to the first floor I made myself invisible as I found a space to bring all three tournament venues down.
"I guess it's time to announce it"
Waiting until the rush hour on the first floor I snapped my fingers and all the monsters disappeared. I watched as so many people became confused as many first timers were in mid battle. Then giving it a moment I dropped all three venues into the open area I found.
Using magic I made my voice heard on every floor that had climbers. "Attention tower climbers. I am the Tower Master, and I want to thank you all. For more than a year now people have been exploring the tower at their own speed, but this is not the point of the tower. Playing it safe does not get you to the top, for this reason I have an event for you" I paused to let the words sink in "In four days there will be a tournament between all levels of climbers, everyone who participates will get some kind of reward. In this tournament there are only two rules, no killing and no torture. Though I do understand that accidents can happen. It will take place of the first floor until then passage past the first floor does not require beating the boss monster and all monsters on the floor will disappear. I hope to see you there"
After my speech I also sent out a notification to everyone.
[The tournament has been announced, participate to get rewards and experience. You have four days to prepare all items are permitted besides potions. The tower was made to take risks to take a risk and participate. Beware of those around you they may be you competition]
[LV: 1-9 stadium A]
[LV: 10-19 stadium B]
[LV: 20-29 stadium C]
[LV: 30+ will take place after other brackets]
[Will you participate?: yes/no]
Fortunately for me the system will automatically separate the participants. Teleporting to the fiftieth floor I approached Arin.
"Do you need something my lord?" Arin said, bowing his head.
"Yes, I assume you heard the announcement?"
"Yes, well all heard it"
"Good, I need some people to organize the fighters when they arrive"
"I can take care of that"
"I also want some guards down there, with so many climbers gathering ready to fight, without a doubt some confrontations will happen"
"Won't the tower.." he started.
"Yes the tower will stop them but I still want as many people as possible to participate so prevention is necessary" I interrupted.
"Of course my lord"
"Perhaps you could bring down some traders as well, it will be a good time to make some money as well as get items from outside the tower"
"I will do that, the merchants and crafters will jump at the chance for this"
"I agree, just make sure nobody interferes with the tournament"
"I will see to that personally"
"Good, the tower should be packed for the next four days"
"I don't mean to overstep by why four days"
"I wanted to give enough time for people at the brink of moving up the brackets to get there but not so much time that the lower ones practically become void of participants"
"Have you chosen the rewards?"
"I have a plan"
"If I may be so bold I would like to suggest something"
"Go ahead, shoot"
"The first-place participants perhaps should be given a small residence on the fiftieth floor. Sor far no climber has a home inside the city, even for the one through nine bracket it will be great motivation to keep climbing"
"That is actually a good idea, thank you Arin. Even if the climber who wins doesn't use it they can sell it or rent it out"
"Anytime my lord"
"I will let you deal with the logistics of that as well, make sure that the higher level brackets get a bit better accommodations then the previous ones"
"I will assign someone to prepare a few places as well as the needed paperwork"
"Good, now I have to go prepare myself for this as well. I have a feeling that a certain character will be appearing at this tournament" I said with an almost evil smile.
The last thing I saw was Arin's confused face as I teleported myself to my own room to plan out what I need to do for the tournament.

I just want to quickly thank everyone who has kept up with the book. I also want to apologise for the subpar chapter no matter how much I rewrote or edited it. It never felt right to me and I didn't want to delay posting it. I may update it if I find the time to rework it.
