Chapter 12: Into The Abyss
The club's atmosphere was suffocating, thick with the scent of cigars and desperation. Carlos Alvarez lounged on the couch, his sharp eyes narrowing as Xander stepped into the room, his gun trained steadily on him.
"Well, well," Carlos drawled, his voice smooth but laced with venom. "Victor's golden boy. You must think you've already won."
"I'm not here for games," Xander said coldly. "This is your only warning. Leave the city tonight, or you'll face the same fate as Victor."
Carlos leaned back, taking a long puff from his cigar. "You think you're the hero of this story, don't you? But the thing about heroes is they always underestimate the villains."
Before Xander could respond, Carlos's smirk widened, and he snapped his fingers.
A loud click echoed behind Xander. He froze, his blood running cold as he heard the unmistakable sound of a dozen guns being cocked.
Akira's voice crackled urgently through his earpiece. "Xander! It's a trap there are more guards flooding in from the front. We're surrounded!"
Xander's father's voice followed, tense and clipped. "We need to pull out. Now!"
Carlos laughed, the sound reverberating off the walls. "You walked right into this one, kid. Did you really think I'd let you walk in here and call the shots?"
Xander glanced over his shoulder. The room was filling with armed men, their weapons gleaming under the dim lights. He gritted his teeth, weighing his options.
"Akira, can you hack the lights?" he whispered into the earpiece, keeping his voice steady despite the growing tension.
"Already on it," she replied, her fingers flying across her keyboard. "Buy me thirty seconds."
Carlos noticed Xander's focus shift and leaned forward, his grin feral. "Oh no, boy. Your little tech wizard won't save you this time."
Suddenly, Carlos grabbed a small remote from the table and pressed a button. A deafening boom shook the club as the doors slammed shut behind Xander's father, cutting him off from the room.
"Dad!" Xander shouted, panic flaring in his chest.
"I'm fine!" his father yelled from the other side, his voice muffled. "But they've locked me out. I'll find another way in!"
Carlos stood, towering over Xander. "Your father can't save you, and your hacker friend? She's out of her depth. It's over."
Xander's grip tightened on his gun. He had to stall. "You're making a mistake, Carlos. Victor's gone. You can either run now or be buried with him."
Carlos laughed again, a cruel, guttural sound. "You don't understand, do you? Victor wasn't the top of the chain. He was just the face. There's someone much bigger pulling the strings. And they're coming for you."
The words hit Xander like a punch to the gut, but before he could process them, the lights flickered.
Akira's voice came through the earpiece. "Got it! Lights out in three... two... one!"
Darkness consumed the room. Shouts erupted as Carlos's men scrambled to adjust, their movements disorganized in the sudden blackout.
"Xander, move now!" Akira's voice urged.
He didn't hesitate. Xander dove behind the couch, using the chaos to his advantage. He could hear the guards firing blindly, their bullets ricocheting off walls and furniture.
From the shadows, Akira's silhouette appeared, her knife glinting faintly in the dim emergency light from her tablet. She moved like a ghost, silently taking down one guard after another.
Xander crawled toward Carlos, who was frantically trying to unlock another door leading deeper into the building. "Not so fast," Xander growled, grabbing his ankle and yanking him to the ground.
Carlos kicked wildly, his boot catching Xander in the ribs. "You don't know what you've started!" Carlos spat, scrambling backward. "You think taking me down will stop this? You've only made it worse!"
Xander ignored the pain radiating through his side. He grabbed Carlos by the collar, his voice low and menacing. "Then tell me who's behind it. Who's pulling the strings?"
Carlos smirked through bloodied lips, his teeth stained red. "You'll find out soon enough. They'll come for you, for her—" he glanced toward Akira "and when they do, you'll wish you stayed in the shadows."
Before Xander could press further, the sound of sirens wailed in the distance.
"Cops are here," Akira said, her voice breathless as she joined him. "We have to go."
Xander hesitated, his knuckles white as he gripped Carlos's shirt. "You're going to rot in a cell," he said through gritted teeth.
Carlos chuckled weakly. "Not for long."
Akira pulled Xander back. "We don't have time for this. Let's move!"
They disappeared into the chaos, slipping out through a hidden exit Akira had found in the blueprints.
The Warning
Hours later, in their safe house, Xander sat silently, replaying Carlos's words in his mind.
Akira set a steaming cup of coffee in front of him, her brow furrowed with concern. "You okay?"
Xander looked up, his expression grim. "Carlos wasn't bluffing. There's someone bigger out there, Akira. Victor was just the beginning."
Akira nodded, her eyes scanning the screen of her laptop. "I've been digging through Victor's files. There's something... strange. A name that keeps popping up: The Revenant. No face, no details, just whispers. Whoever they are, they're not small-time."
Xander's father entered the room, his face drawn. "If what Carlos said is true, we need to be prepared. This isn't over."
Xander leaned back in his chair, the weight of the revelation pressing down on him. He thought taking down Victor would end the nightmare, but now it seemed they had only scratched the surface.
In the distance, a low rumble of thunder echoed, as if the city itself was warning them of the storm to come.
