Chapter 13: The Rise Of A Phantom
The city had been eerily quiet for days. Xander, Akira, and his father knew better than to trust the calm. Their every move felt watched, their every step shadowed. Victor's empire had been dismantled, but the echoes of his influence still lingered.
Akira sat cross-legged on the floor, her laptop humming softly. "This doesn't make sense," she muttered, her fingers dancing across the keyboard.
Xander glanced over from the couch. "What doesn't?"
"Victor," she said, her voice tight. "His trial is still weeks away, but the files I pulled from the police database don't add up. His case is airtight, but... something's off. Too clean."
Xander's father entered the room, a map of the city in his hands. "What do you mean, too clean?"
Akira's gaze darted to him. "It's like someone's paving the way for Victor to walk free. The evidence is there, but it's... fragile. It wouldn't take much to tear it apart."
Xander tensed. "You're saying someone's working behind the scenes to protect him?"
Akira nodded grimly. "And it's someone powerful."
The Phantom Returns
Later that night, Xander couldn't shake the feeling of unease. He stood on the apartment balcony, staring out over the city. The rain drizzled softly, turning the streets below into shimmering mirrors of neon lights.
His phone buzzed. He hesitated, then answered.
The voice on the other end sent a chill down his spine. "Hello, nephew."
"Victor," Xander hissed, his knuckles tightening around the phone.
Victor's laugh was cold and unhurried. "You didn't really think you'd won, did you? The game is far from over."
"You're in custody," Xander shot back, though his voice faltered slightly. "You're finished."
Victor's tone was mocking. "Am I? I warned you, Xander. You've stirred forces you don't understand. Did you really think taking me down was the end? You've merely unleashed something far worse."
Xander's blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"
Victor chuckled. "You'll see soon enough. But let me leave you with a little advice watch the ones closest to you. Not everyone is who they seem."
The line went dead.
Xander stared at the phone, his mind racing. He turned back into the apartment, his face pale.
"What is it?" Akira asked, noticing his expression.
Xander hesitated. "Victor... he just called me."
Her eyes widened. "That's impossible. He's in maximum security no phones, no outside communication."
Xander's father entered the room, alarmed. "If he's contacting you, it means he's still pulling strings."
Akira grabbed her laptop. "I'll hack into the prison's system. Maybe I can figure out how he made that call."
The Trap Unfolds
As Akira worked, Xander paced the room. His father watched him silently, sensing the storm brewing within him.
Akira suddenly froze, her eyes locked on the screen. "No way..."
"What?" Xander rushed to her side.
Akira pointed to a line of code. "There's no record of Victor being in custody."
Xander stared at her in disbelief. "What are you saying? We watched him get arrested!"
"I don't know how," she said, her voice trembling. "But he's not in the system. It's like he disappeared."
A loud bang shattered the moment. The door to the apartment was kicked open, and armed men flooded in, their guns trained on the trio.
"Down on the ground!" one of them barked.
Xander's father reacted first, drawing his weapon and firing at the nearest intruder. The room erupted into chaos as Xander grabbed Akira and....
