Chapter 43: Departing Dead
As long as no one triggered the bizarre rules, such things would never happen again.
Sacrificing one academy to prevent the bizarre from spreading was undoubtedly a highly cost-effective thing.
"Is it over?"
The students stood up cautiously but discovered a large wet patch on the ground, reeking of urine.
But everyone tacitly avoided mentioning this embarrassing matter.
"We survived? That's great! So we can leave this ghostly place tomorrow, right?"
"Yes, we survived! That's great..."
Everyone hugged each other excitedly, celebrating their survival.
Through countless perilous situations, they had ultimately survived.
After leaving this place, their lives would change. Their minds, nearly crushed by fear, would make them deeply wary of anything remotely similar. Like the saying goes, "Once bitten by a snake, one is afraid of well ropes for ten years."
They would probably find it difficult to continue working as Valkyries. After all, life in St. Freya was too laid-back. It was more like attending school than undergoing military management. It wasn't even as strict as some schools.
After leaving this greenhouse, they would rather return to ordinary lives than deal with strange and unpredictable events again.
However, there was one exception among them.
Saori Tsuruyo looked blankly at Li Mo's corpse, walking slowly to his side.
She hadn't forgotten Li Mo's instructions to put his body back into the black coffin after tonight, and then... bury him.
Looking at Li Mo's bloodless face, Saori Tsuruyo imagined Li Mo suddenly waking up and continuing to lead them forward.
But that was just a fantasy. If he could wake up, how could he have made her carry out the final burial ritual?
Saori Tsuruyo carefully picked up Li Mo's body and placed it gently back into the black coffin. She lifted the lid, but didn't immediately close it.
She stared intently for a few moments, trying to memorize his final appearance. Only after hearing the urging voices from behind did she completely close the coffin lid.
When Saori Tsuruyo returned to the group, she realized that the topic of their discussion had become increasingly bold. Some were jokingly teasing the head ghosts, imagining their bodies being taken over.
It had nothing to do with her. Saori Tsuruyo sat down in the corner, as if she was back in those days long ago.
She could never join in on their conversations, not because she couldn't, but because she didn't want to.
The content was boring, the conversations pointless. Rather than wasting time on it, she would rather watch videos online by herself, play some games, or learn all sorts of things to improve herself.
Saori Tsuruyo gripped the thermometer in her hand, glancing once more at Shigure Kira, whose life or death was still unknown.
She couldn't help but feel pity and regret for her. Her team had fallen apart. All the once familiar and close teammates were buried here.
Whether Shigure Kira woke up or not, she would be in pain. Perhaps being dead would be more peaceful.
Because a responsible person, as long as they were alive, not only had to take responsibility for their own actions, but they also had to pay the price for their mistakes. Both of these were tiring and meant that life wouldn't be easy.
It would be best to have teammates by her side, but those who were able to accompany Shigure Kira in dealing with bizarre events had all died. From now on, Shigure Kira, filled with guilt, would surely not involve her friends and would deal with such events by herself, in fulfilling her duty as a Valkyrie.
The dead child from the night of the watch had clearly been acting strange, but the situation still ended up just like what happened with Ekri in the broadcasting room.
In that kind of situation, everyone knew that they shouldn't let the entity in, but they, including herself, had thought that there wasn't anything wrong with the child, and no one had questioned Shigure Kira's judgment.
No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.
This quote wasn't entirely accurate, but it was perfect for their current situation.
If even one person had pointed out the strangeness, so many bad consequences wouldn't have followed.
What had happened was too unreasonable. They could have resolved the situation properly, but they hadn't.
Since no one had noticed, then everyone should pay the price, but the price had been shouldered by others.
She wasn't a dull person. Sometimes Saori Tsuruyo seemed to be silent, but in fact, she had many thoughts, and because of it, Li Mo didn't need to think about everything.
"No wonder Big brother always had to verify the accuracy of my answers…"
"As expected, our thinking was too simple."
Saori Tsuruyo squatted in the corner, resting her head on her knees. She said, full of self-blame,
"If I had been more perceptive and not held him back, then maybe everyone would still be okay..."
Big brother would be alive and wouldn't have had to lure the terrifying entity and become her food. Shigure Kira, the captain, wouldn't be on the verge of death, and the Valkyrie squad wouldn't have been wiped out until only the captain was left.
She had survived, and more burdens had survived as well. But they had survived because many others who shouldn't have died had died in their stead. Those who were stronger, smarter, and more capable than them had died for them.
The corner was cold and quiet, and the pressure from the bizarre entities had disappeared. And the other people were now chatting excitedly.
"I still can't believe that we're alive!"
"Yeah, we're so lucky."
"Our survival now is temporary. What will happen in the future? Senpai is dead. If more ghosts show up, wouldn't we all just die with him?"
"…" Saori Tsuruyo frowned slightly, displeased.
Li Mo had just died, not even buried yet, and these restless people were already chattering non-stop.
They had completely forgotten about the dread and horror just now.
Even if someone pointed out that this behavior wasn't really appropriate, once the chatter and excitement was ignited, whether or not their behavior was righteous became meaningless.
Because this was the silent majority. A social phenomenon.
In the decision-making and discussion process, most people were always reluctant to express their opinions. They wouldn't actively state their thoughts.
This meant that all you could see were irresponsible and vague words.
Saori Tsuruyo wanted to stop them. She was from the Far East and had a serious attitude towards funerals. In her opinion, discussing the dead so openly was a kind of disrespect and was very impolite.
But as Saori Tsuruyo approached, she heard something even worse.
"Let's leave early tomorrow morning. I can't stand this ghostly place. Every extra second here is dangerous."
"Yeah, let's go together. It's safe in the mornings, and senpai isn't here anymore. There's no reason for us to keep staying here."
Everyone discussed the plan of leaving first thing tomorrow. Then, Saori Tsuruyo's voice came from behind them.
"You can't go." Saori Tsuruyo's voice was dull, suppressed.
"Why? It's dangerous here. You should leave with us. After we leave, we just have to report the situation here to Schicksal, and the headquarters will send people over to deal with it. If we stay here, we'll only make things worse."
"We still need to carry out the burial tomorrow. I can't carry the grave incense and lift the black coffin at the same time. I hope that you can stay and help me finish the burial before leaving."
Saori Tsuruyo continued to endure. She could pretend that she didn't hear the words said before, but no matter what, she had to finish the last task that Li Mo had given her.
She had to successfully bury Li Mo.
Everyone looked at each other. The faces of several people clearly showed signs of hesitation.
But there would always be totally selfish people in a group, and someone jumped out to retort:
"Saori, with all due respect, is everything that senpai said definitely correct? If he really knew everything, he should be alive right now, not lying in a coffin and waiting for you to bury him."
"We finally managed to survive such a terrifying place. Who knows what will happen tomorrow? The correct choice is to leave this to the headquarters to deal with."
"It's not a big deal if you come back here with the headquarters later to deal with senpai's body."
"We'll attend the funeral then."
"Don't you want to go home? Think about your parents, friends, family…"
The girl started to instill her ideas into Saori Tsuruyo with a long-winded speech.
The people who had been hesitating immediately walked to her side, expressing their support for her idea with their actions.
No one wanted to continue to stay in this ghostly place. They all wanted to go home as soon as possible.
The disgusting heads were all over the ground. The filthy blackish-red blood was everywhere. The faces in the spirit tablets were still showing bizarre expressions…
They didn't cause a commotion earlier, because Li Mo had kept everyone under control.
Now that Li Mo was dead, they naturally dispersed. No one was willing to listen to anyone. They all just wanted to leave as soon as possible.
If they waited any longer, if something unexpected happened, it would be too late for regrets.
