Black Clover: The Chaos Legacy

Chapter 2: Chapter 2: New Life

Since that night, five years had flown by in a flash. Living under the same roof, eating meals together, and even sharing a single room, the three of us had grown inseparable.

On this particular day, we were running towards the hill where Sister Lily, the kind nun who had joined us 2 years ago, was waiting. Me and Asta, were ahead, keeping a brisk pace. Behind us, Yuno trailed a little, his voice calling out.

"Hey, wait up! Wait! Ow!"

Hearing the thud, we turned back to see Yuno sprawled on the ground. Without hesitation, Asta and I ran back to him.

"Yuno, are you okay?" Asta asked, concern in his voice.

I extended a hand. "Come on, Yuno."

Yuno looked up at us, tears welling in his eyes. "Asta... Ryo..." he murmured before grabbing my hand to pull himself up.

Asta sighed. "Jeez, Yuno, you're such a crybaby."

Yuno wiped his tears, his voice barely audible. "Well..."

Asta grinned, cutting him off. "It's okay, Yuno. We'll always have your back. Right, Ryo?"

I nodded with a reassuring smile. "Asta's right. We've got you, always."

Yuno wiped his eyes one last time and smiled softly. "Thank You Asta, Ryo."

"All right, then! Let's get going—they're waiting for us at the top!" Asta exclaimed, grabbing Yuno's hand. Together, they started running up the hill, Yuno keeping pace this time.

Watching them, I chuckled before breaking into a sprint to catch up.

On top of the hill, we all sat under the shade of a large tree. The weather was perfect, a soft breeze carrying the scent of fresh grass. Aside from the four of us, there was Recca, a girl who'd joined the church two years after me, peacefully napping beside Sister Lily. In Sister Lily's arms was Nash—another recent addition who'd arrived just a few weeks ago—and he was fast asleep too.

We were munching on baked nomotatos, a tough but surprisingly tasty specialty grown here in the Boonies.

Yuno was having some trouble with chewing and muttered in frustration while sniffling, "It's delicious... but so hard."

Asta, still trying to bite in, suddenly blurted out, "Yeah Sister Lily! You're an amazing cook! When I grow up, will you marry me and cook for me every day?"

Sister Lily, as calm as ever, smiled gently. "Actually, Father baked these. Would you like to marry him instead?"

Asta froze, his eyes wide in shock. Before anyone could react, he collapsed dramatically on the ground, flailing his arms like a toddler throwing a tantrum. "No! You're the one I want to marry! Sister! Marry me! Marry me! Marry me!"

I couldn't help but sigh, slowly scooting away from the scene. I sat next to Yuno, pretending I didn't know Asta. Seriously, from the moment Sister Lily arrived at the church, Asta had been relentlessly chasing after her, even though she'd turned him down countless times.

Sister Lily chuckled softly and, with a playful smile, raised her grimoire. That was all it took. Asta instantly stopped, trembling in fear.

As Asta sulked, pouting and grumbling, Yuno finished his food and said in his usual matter-of-fact way, "Asta, it's not possible for Sister Lily to marry you. Remember what Ryo told us? She's a nun. Women of the cloth can't marry anyone."

Asta huffed, shooting Yuno a defiant look. "I'm not done yet, Yuno! I won't give up until I'm an adult, no matter what!"

I couldn't help but smirk a little at his stubbornness. I walked over, gave him a light smack on the head, and said, "Why don't you just give up, Asta? No matter how hard you try, Sister Lily can't marry you. So stop pestering her."

But of course, Asta didn't take the hint. "No! I'll never give up!" he declared.

I sighed deeply, shaking my head. Some things never changed. Exhausted, I returned to Sister Lily's side. She smiled knowingly at me and patted the spot next to her. Nash had woken up, likely startled by Asta's shouting, so I reached out to play with him. Letting the chaos fade into the background, I couldn't help but feel content in the peace that followed.

As time passed, evening arrived, and all of us made our way toward the church. After a simple dinner, Sister Lily announced that she would read us a story—the story of the First Wizard King. Once she had put Recca and Nash to sleep, she called us to the nave and began the story.

As she spoke, the three of us had very different reactions. I was listening intently, intrigued by every detail. Asta, on the other hand, was so hyped up, it was like he was already the Wizard King himself and ready to go fight the demon at that very moment. Yuno, however, was less enthusiastic—he was closing his eyes and covering his ears in fear.

Sister Lily continued with the story. "…And then, the world was covered in deep, deep darkness. Just when the demon tried to destroy the world…"

Before she could go on, Asta couldn't hold it in anymore. "He's not going to get away with that!" he exclaimed, practically jumping out of his seat.

Sister Lily smiled at his enthusiasm and kept going. "…a brave mage appeared. And he fought the demon to bring dawn back to the world."

Yuno, hearing this, opened his eyes and peeked toward the book. His fear seemed to melt away just a little.

As Sister Lily turned the page, she continued, "...And finally, the mage defeated the demon, and the mage's light shone ever so brightly upon the world. The long, long night came to an end. This was the dawn of our world."

Asta, clearly pleased, gave an enthusiastic "Yes!" from his spot, and even Yuno stood up and came closer to see the book better.

Sister Lily turned another page and continued, "And so, the mage was proclaimed as the Wizard King, and he became a legend."

As she finished, both Asta and Yuno exclaimed in unison, "The Wizard King..."

That image of the Wizard King was now firmly planted in their hearts, as expected. But as for me, I didn't exactly aim to be the Wizard King. Who would want that thankless job? It's almost like the role of Hokage in the Naruto world. Just stuck in an office all day long with piles of paperwork—no thanks. After all, I was already a social slave in my past life, spending my days buried under mountains of paperwork, and that's not what I want in this world. For me, it was much simpler: I just wanted to get stronger, live freely, and enjoy life without the burden of too much responsibility.

The next morning, we stood outside the church, gazing at the demon's skull that loomed over us. Asta, eyes full of curiosity, broke the silence with a question. "Say, Sister, the Wizard King still exists, right?"

Sister Lily nodded with a smile. "Yes, the title of Wizard King is passed down through many generations. They've been protecting us with their magic all along. It's because of the Wizard King that the Clover Kingdom is so peaceful."

Asta's eyes lit up. "That's so awesome!"

Yuno, who had been silent up until then, tilted his head and asked, "So, is the Wizard King really that important?"

Sister Lily's expression became more serious. "He is the most important person after the King."

Asta suddenly jumped up with excitement. "Yoshi, I've made up my mind!"

Sister Lily blinked in confusion. "Huh!? About what, Asta?"

Asta grinned widely. "I'm gonna be the Wizard King!"

We all froze in stunned silence even though I was prepared for it, I was still stunned. Not expecting such a bold declaration, we stared at him blankly. When no one responded, Asta turned around and asked, "Sister?"

Sister Lily blinked, clearly caught off guard. "I'm sorry, Asta, I wasn't expecting that. Why did you decide on this?"

Asta beamed, his determination shining through. "Well, didn't he defeat the demon? That means he's so strong and so cool. I wanna be as cool as him too!" He paused for a moment before continuing, his tone softening. "If I become important... If I become the Wizard King, I'll be able to make people even happier, right? You all will get to wear nice clothes and eat all the good food you want! And I'm gonna make this small, crappy little church huge and amazing!"

I couldn't help but chuckle lightly at Asta's enthusiasm, and even Sister Lily smiled helplessly. "Crappy?" she repeated, amused.

Asta nodded confidently, not catching the joke. "And I'll get you whatever you want too, Sister!"

Sister Lily chuckled, shaking her head. "I'll look forward to it, Asta. Right, Ryo, Yuno?"

Yuno, always the composed one, smiled and nodded. "Yeah." He then held up his pendant, the symbol of his future ambitions, and muttered softly, "The Wizard King..."

Asta, never one to let go of a dream, struck again. "I'm going to be the Wizard King, so Sister! Marry me!"

The corner of my mouth twitched, and I shook my head helplessly. Not this again.

Sister Lily, keeping her cool, replied, "That's a completely different subject."

Asta, as determined as ever, wasn't ready to give up. "Not yet, I won't give up!"

Sister Lily gave him a firm response. "No."

And just like that, they started bickering again. I couldn't help but laugh, along with Yuno, at their antics. It was hard not to when Asta's energy was so contagious, even if his methods were… unconventional.

Time flew by, soon it was December 12th, bringing an overcast sky that hinted at the year's end. Everyone was busy with their tasks. Outside the church, I was helping Sister Lily with the laundry, the crisp air making the chore surprisingly pleasant. Nearby, Asta was, once again, trying to "channel his magic." He stood with his arms raised in a tai chi-like pose, his face scrunched up in fierce concentration.

After a dramatic pause, he let out a determined "Ha!" and thrust his hands forward as if casting a powerful spell. Nothing happened.

Seeing his efforts go unrewarded, he dropped to his knees with a loud groan, pounding the ground in frustration. "Why? Why can't I still use magic?" he lamented, his voice tinged with despair.

Not one to stay discouraged for long, Asta perked up when he noticed Sister Lily. "Sister! I'll hang up the laundry!" he declared, rushing over with newfound energy.

Sister Lily smiled kindly at him. "Thanks, Asta."

True to form, Asta seized the moment. "So marry m—"

Before he could finish, Sister Lily interrupted with her signature response, still smiling. "No."

What followed was their usual back-and-forth. Asta, full of determination, kept proposing, only to be swiftly interrupted by Sister Lily's gentle refusals. Shaking my head, I brought over the second basket of clothes, pretending not to notice their antics.

While Asta was dramatically kneeling on the ground, heartbroken and in tears, Yuno approached us, carrying a loudly crying Nash in his arms. Recca trailed behind him, looking exasperated.

"Don't you start crying now too, Yuno," Recca said, half-teasing, half-warning.

Yuno sniffled, his eyes starting to well up. "Nash... won't stop crying..."

Asta, suddenly rejuvenated, spun around and exclaimed, "Yuno, leave this to me!"

Yuno blinked, surprised. "Asta..."

With a confident grin, Asta proclaimed, "I'm going to be the Wizard King, after all. Making a baby or two stop crying is a piece of cake!"

He took Nash from Yuno and began his attempt at calming the baby down—by shaking him gently but with way too much energy. Nash's cries, unsurprisingly, grew louder and more panicked.

Seeing this, I sighed and walked over, knocking Asta lightly on the head. "You're going to give him a headache, not calm him down," I said, taking Nash into my arms.

I rocked Nash gently, humming softly, and within moments, his cries quieted. He yawned and drifted off to sleep, snuggling into my arms.

Asta and Yuno stared at me, mouths agape. "How did you do that?" they exclaimed in unison.

I smiled and explained, "You don't calm a baby down by being rough, Asta. You have to be gentle."

Recca, never missing an opportunity, teased, "Way to go, Wizard King."

Asta turned bright red and pouted, crossing his arms. "Shut up!"

The rest of us laughed, the moment lightening the gloomy day. Moments like these reminded me just how lively life at the church could be.

As we laughed and joked around, Father came soaring toward us on his broom, landing gracefully nearby. He dismounted and looked around at us with his usual calm demeanor. "Say, I was wondering if any one of you could run an errand for me," he began.

Before he could finish, Asta burst out excitedly, "Me, me, me, me! I'll do it!" He bounced in place like an overenthusiastic child, waving his arms wildly.

Father, unbothered by Asta's antics, continued as if he hadn't heard him. "Would one of you deliver this letter to the mayor for me? It's quite important."

Still undeterred, Asta shouted, "Me, me, me, me!" louder and more persistently, his enthusiasm showing no signs of waning.

Father, clearly accustomed to Asta's behavior, ignored him completely and turned to me instead. "Ryo, could you do it? It's an important letter, and I trust you'll handle it carefully."

I nodded in agreement, handing Nash—who was starting to fuss—to Sister Lily. However, as if on cue, Nash began wailing louder, and even Sister Lily's soothing attempts couldn't calm him. Seeing this, I could only sigh in resignation, handing the letter back to Father as I took Nash back into my arms.

'Sheesh, kids,' I thought, trying to quiet the squirming Nash. 'I guess this is fate at work. Somehow, the letter still ends up in Yuno's hands. This was one of the biggest turning points for him, after all.'

Father chuckled at the situation. "Looks like Nash has claimed you for the day, Ryo," he said lightheartedly, shaking his head. Then, turning his attention to Yuno, he continued, "Yuno, could you do it?" His voice was kind but carried a tone of expectation.

Hearing this, Asta instantly froze mid-bounce, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Huh?! But—!" he started to protest, only to trail off as Father ignored him entirely. Yuno, caught off guard, hesitated. "M-me?" he stammered, pointing to himself.

Father nodded. "Yes, this is an important letter, and I'm counting on you. I need to visit the mayor of the next village to request food for the winter since we don't have enough tatoes to last." He sighed, his expression briefly clouded with concern. "It's vital the mayor receives this."

Yuno bit his lip, glancing at me as if hoping for reassurance. With Nash still nestled in my arms, I gave him a small nod of encouragement. Finally, Yuno seemed to gather his resolve. "Alright, I'll do it," he said softly but with determination.

Asta, however, wasn't ready to give up. "Yuno, are you sure? Will you be fine going alone?" he asked, concern replacing his usual fiery demeanor.

Yuno nodded firmly. "I'll be fine, Asta" he said, clutching the letter tightly. With that, he turned and began running toward the mayor's house, his figure disappearing into the horizon as we watched in silence. As I watched him run off, I couldn't help but smile. The wheels of fate were already turning, pushing Asta and Yuno toward their destined path.
