Chapter 8: Chapter 8
Winter's eyes lingered on Ryker's study, a sudden determination burning within her. She knew that if she was going to handle Ryker's duties, she needed to know more about what was going on. And the best place to start was by reviewing Ryker's papers and documents. "I'll be in Ryker's study," she said to Kaida, her voice firm and resolute. "I need to review the kingdom's affairs and make sure everything is running smoothly. The weight of responsibility settled heavily on her shoulders, but she was determined to rise to the challenge."
Kaida nodded, her expression understanding and supportive. "I'll make sure no one disturbs you, Your Highness. You have a lot to take in, and I'll ensure you have the peace and quiet you need."
Winter nodded, her eyes already scanning the room as she entered Ryker's study. The familiar scent of leather and parchment filled her nostrils, and she felt a sense of calm wash over her. She began to sift through the papers on Ryker's desk, her eyes scanning the documents with a practiced ease. As she read, her brow furrowed in concentration, her mind absorbing the complex information.
Just as she was getting into the rhythm of her work, a knock interrupted her reading. A black-haired man, dressed in formal attire, stood at the door. "Your Highness," he said, his voice low and respectful. "The council would like to speak with you."
Winter's heart skipped a beat as she felt time freeze. She swallowed the invisible lump that had formed in her throat, her mind racing with the implications. The council was a major power player in the kingdom, known for its influential decisions and far-reaching consequences. What did they want with her?
With a steady hand, Winter set aside the papers and rose from her seat. She smoothed out her dress, took a deep breath, and nodded at the black-haired man. "I'll be right there," she said, her voice calm and authoritative.
As she followed the man out of the study, Winter couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. What did the council want to discuss with her? And how would she navigate the complex web of politics and intrigue that lay at the heart of the kingdom?
