Chapter 6: Chapter Six: What I was waiting for

The next day I didn't have any lectures, ah it was just as if they knew I really needed rest. I just stayed at home and washed my clothes, cleaned the house and slept, when I woke up I rushed to cook what my roommates would eat before they came back from school because I knew they would be starving and too tired to cook anything to eat. On Friday, when I got to school for my classes I noticed there was a flier circulating all over the faculty, they even had banners erected at different locations in the faculty, some people were even selling tickets. I had to ask some of my course mates and they explained to me that the next two weeks was fresher's week, that there would be burn fire night, there would be so many activities, with the way they explained it to me each day has its own activity, and that through out the week there wouldn't be any lectures, there would even be an all night fresher's welcome party, and I wasn't planning to miss that. The lecturers came in according to the time table and taught us, we even wrote an unplanned quiz that day, thanks gracious I always studied all my notes and handouts after every days class, if I was too tight to study immediately I got home after showering and eating, I would just rest well and then go for night class. I always say night class, please night class is not another set of classes we have at night, night class is just an act of discipline where students sacrifice their night sleep in their cozy bed and warm room to go outside to halls or classes where other students also come to read and stay there all night reading through out. Maybe when you get home the next day you just close your eyes a little to rest and then hurriedly prepare for classes if you have one that day. When I got home that day, I started thinking of the dress I would wear, I went through my bag and all I could find were normal clothes for staying at home or church outfits and the few clothes my mum got for few days before I left for school, clothes that I would wear to classes, there was nothing in my bag that could be worn to a party, nothing party related at all, thank goodness my parents stuffed me with pocket money for my expenditures. I had to go shopping, let me use normal English abeg, shopping is used by the people that are going to supermarket to go and pack clothes that they need and the ones they don't , abeg what I meant to say is that I have to the market and buy what I would wear to the party, las las nah either one or two clothes I go buy. There was this very popular market called 'Eke Awka', I don't really know why they named it that 'cos it's not as if people only sold their wares on an Eke day, the market was always buzzling everyday, but the one that is my business there is that I can actually get nice and original already made dress way cheaper than I could get it in Ifite, so I concluded that I would go to that market to buy my clothes, I then asked for directions from some of my hostel mates that have been staying in Awka for a while. On Saturday morning, I woke up, did my chores, actually it's not chores like the ones we do in our father's houses, we just created a roster that had every of our names in it and the share of work assigned to each person for each day, some days I dust the house and sweep, some days I clean our room and do the dishes, some days I wash the toilet, while some day I cook for day. For today, my work was to clean our room and do the dishes, I quickly did it and went to the market, things were so costly but I managed to buy two dresses, a pair of heels and an hand bag, the transport was something else. Before we knew it, the D day came, that night my roommates got dressed and even came to assist me because I was taking too long to finish, they helped me with my make up and when they were done I was looking so gorgeous and they were looking great too, one thing I loved about the girl's hostel is that it is placed almost at the centre of everything you would hardly have to take transport to any where, so we just crossed and we were already at the venue for the fresher's night party, the digital library field. You would say I didn't fill you in on how the burn fire night went, well that was because I didn't fancy it at all, students were just taking stupid risks running through a very big fire that was lit and students surrounded the fire shouting and singing, after one of the students that tried to run through almost got burnt, I couldn't stand that sight any longer and immediately compelled my friends for us to go home. I don't really what is exciting about that suicide attempt. We also did our rag day, Omo! that day I and my roommates, we trekked from inside school to Aroma on rags with empty Milo tins and people were giving us money, we later came home and counted and it was 50 thousand naira all our money put together, it was something.
