Chapter 39: 39
"Don't rush. Don't rush."
Accelerator's voice carried a chilling calm as his crimson gaze swept across the dozen or so Committee members in the room.
The smirk on his face grew more sinister with each passing moment.
"We have all the time in the world today. Let's take things slow."
His measured steps and deliberate words tightened the already-frayed nerves of the Committee members.
Some had already resigned themselves to their fate. Two of them, however, trembled as they raised pistols and opened fire on Accelerator in a last-ditch effort to save themselves.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The shots echoed, but Accelerator remained unscathed. Not a single bullet left a mark.
"Courageous."
He offered a cruel smile, extending his arm as if gripping something invisible.
The two Committee members froze mid-action, choking as an unseen force lifted them off the ground by their necks.
Bang!
Forming his hand into the shape of a gun, Accelerator mockingly mimicked the sound of a shot.
One of the men's heads exploded like a watermelon, red and white fragments splattering across the room.
Bang!
Another mimicked shot, and the second man let out a desperate cry before his head, too, burst apart. This time, the gore painted the walls and floor of the conference room like a grotesque mural.
The slow, methodical executions sent the remaining Committee members spiraling into madness.
Several attempted to flee, scrambling toward the door in a blind panic. But after only a few steps, they were lifted into the air by the same invisible grip, their escape cut short.
"Heh heh heh… Don't run so fast, my dear dignitaries. I might lose track of you."
Dragging a still-intact chair from the wreckage, Accelerator sank into it, leaning back as if enjoying a twisted performance.
He turned to face the struggling captives, a manic grin splitting his face.
"Let's start with you."
Bang!
The closest man to the door was struck first. His chest burst open, leaving a gaping hole where his torso had been. Blood and shattered bones scattered across the floor, forming a gruesome red carpet.
"This one's different—a nice variety!" Accelerator chuckled, his voice dripping with malice.
He turned his makeshift finger gun to the next target.
Bang!
"Ahhhh!" The second man let out a guttural scream but realized he hadn't been killed. Relief flooded his face for a fleeting moment—
—only for Accelerator to break into hysterical laughter.
"Ahahahaha! Even the 'great leaders' of this nation wet their pants when faced with death! How amusing!"
"Don't worry. That was just the first shot. Here's the second."
The man barely had time to register the words before his body was torn apart, reduced to a mangled pile of flesh and shattered bones.
One by one, Accelerator executed each fleeing member, his laughter echoing eerily in the confined space.
When he finally finished, he leaned back in the chair, his manic laughter fading into silence.
But as the quiet settled in, the undercurrent of rage and sorrow in his laugh became all the more apparent.
The grin on his face disappeared, replaced by a cold, emotionless expression.
His crimson eyes scanned the remaining members, who stood frozen, too terrified to move. An idea sparked in his mind.
With a wave of his hand, he cleared the debris on the floor, leaving the room unnervingly tidy. Walking to the large screen on the wall, Accelerator raised a single finger, his mind's computational power effortlessly breaking through the system's defenses.
Minutes later, the screen flickered to life.
Instead of his usual manic grin, a satisfied smile spread across his face.
Turning back to the trembling Committee members, he spoke with a voice filled with chilling resolve:
"I will grant you a fair trial."
Click.
The screen lit up, displaying dozens of live feeds.
Some feeds connected to the Japanese Archipelago's military command centers, while others linked to the Committees of various nations across the globe.
The remaining Committee members instantly realized what was about to happen.
One man, his hair streaked with gray, stepped forward despite his trembling frame. He bowed slightly to Accelerator, his voice quivering as he spoke.
"You… you intend to try us publicly, don't you?"
"Hmm?" Accelerator tilted his head in mock surprise. "You actually understand? That's… unexpected."
"I thought you had all long since lost the fundamental decency of being human."
The older man sighed, his body sagging as if under the weight of a lifetime of regrets.
"As someone who once dealt with the Enemy of Humanity fifty years ago… I've dreamed of this moment countless times in my nightmares. I tried to fight against it once, but in the end, I became complicit."
He looked Accelerator directly in the eyes.
"I always knew I would die at the hands of a superhuman. I just never expected it to happen this way."
"Oh?" Accelerator's interest was piqued. "What way did you imagine?"
"In my mind, the Committees' downfall would come through unity—superhumans and ordinary humans working together to overthrow us."
The man's voice grew steadier as he continued, revealing the thoughts he had buried for decades.
"I imagined the people uniting to burn away the remnants of our corruption, tearing us down as the cancer of society we've become. Only through such efforts could humanity move forward into a new era."
"Hmm…" Accelerator pondered the idea aloud. "So, you thought a united front would dissolve the barriers between humans and superhumans, ushering in a new social order."
The old man nodded.
"Yes. But instead, I see now that a single powerful superhuman has chosen brute force to obliterate the old world."
"You should be careful."
"Careful of what?" Accelerator asked with a dismissive snort.
"Of becoming the very dragon you seek to slay."
Accelerator closed his eyes for a moment before letting out a bitter chuckle.
"Duly noted. But today, you will face judgment."
The room fell silent.
Every Committee member remaining understood the fate that awaited them.
Accelerator clicked his tongue in irritation before activating the room's cameras.
The conference room's live feed was broadcast across the globe.
The entire world now bore witness to the carnage inside.
"Greetings, esteemed military commanders of the Japanese Archipelago… and members of Committees across the world."
The silver-haired boy's voice was calm, almost conversational.
"It's currently 5 p.m. local time. Good afternoon."
"I am Accelerator, a superhuman. Pleased to make your acquaintance."
