Chapter 27
We continued to wait for a Revenger to come. I was starting to get impatient, not because I was itching to get into a battle (that I’d likely lose), but just because it’s boring as fuck to stand in the middle of nowhere, doing nothing but looking around at the wooden tree stumps.
Also, wooden is a literally accurate adjective. Wait, ignore the fact that I’m using so many redundant adjectives right now. I was bored and there were no physical observations I could make aside from the fact that Clara looked hot from behind holding a sexy blade and the fact that tree stumps are made out of wood.
Oh, yeah, it’s also dark.
“When’s a Revenger going to come?”
“If you ask me one more question I’m going to cut off your head.”
Wow, even her syntax was condescending.
Anyway, I guess I’ll just have to continue to stare around idiotically not even knowing what I’m supposed to be looking for. I don’t even know what they look like, so I was basically just glancing around at anything that moved.
Suddenly, another ghoul appeared from the bushes. However, Clara didn’t instantly slice it like a pizza unlike before.
She simply stood there silently, watching it approach her.
Thump.
She kicked it across the ground. Dust, dirt and grass were flung up into the air. The creature shook around, wriggling in order to get itself back onto its ‘feet’. Although it looked like it was just levitating before so I wasn’t really sure why it needed to be so gyroscopically accurate.
This time, it began to approach me.
Okay, I guess Clara was testing me then. That shouldn’t be too much of an issue considering how easily she killed one before.
The ghoul sped up and rapidly flew toward my face.
I didn’t really know what to do. I just increased the concentration of EM-waves around me and held my hand in a fist.
I sure hope that fighting fantasy creatures is the same as normal fighting—otherwise, I might be in some strife.
Thump.
My knuckles cracked into the face of the ghoul-thing.
It took a bit of knockback but was still fully alive.
“Um, how am I supposed to kill this thing?”
Clara sliced it with a sharp weapon earlier. Whilst it was physically moved (not emotionally) by my punch, it didn’t look like it actually suffered any injuries per se.
As it approached me again, I raised my arm and punched it like before.
Thump.
Crash.
This time, it slammed into the dirt with a bit more ferocity. It dug up a decent amount of the landscape as it rolled across the ground. Still, it didn’t look like it was actually ‘damaged’ though.
What am I supposed to do here? I had no sharp object to cut it with…
Suddenly, there was another, louder sound coming from the bushes.
“Shit,” Clara mumbled.
Before she could teach her little hatchling (me) how to hunt for food, figuratively, she swiftly cut down my little training ghoul. Her razor-sharp blade sliced through its insides as before, letting it poof and dissipate into the air. There was a little thump as the Ghoul Stone dropped to the ground.
I didn’t even have time to pick it up when I saw what was coming.
It was a large, humanoid creature. Its growls were of the same timbre as whatever sound the ghouls were making, but its body shape was significantly more dramatic. Still, it looked like a mere scratch in the wind due to the semi-permeable appearance of its body, allowing anyone to see the refracted light all through its torso.
This is a bit cooked. I haven’t even completed the tutorial and now I’m straight onto the boss fight.
Clara’s blade began to emanate a thick black aura.
Okay, so was I going to be useless here? I don’t even know how to fight these creatures and Clara clearly has the better equipment—and knowledge.
I surrounded myself with a coat of EM-waves regardless. It was safety first.
The Revenger charged at Clara, swinging its hand at her face.
She swung her blade and sliced off its hand.
However, before she could raise it again to block, the creature grew another arm and slammed it into her face.
Thump.
She was sent tumbling into the nearby tree. Her hair was strewn all over her face as she struggled to breathe and pull herself back up.
Oh fuck. This was not good.
Well, this was about time for me to go then. I didn’t exactly have any emotional attachments to these people so I might as well get out while I still could—or at least I thought I still could.
Turns out that Clara sold me out to the monster, throwing a handful of dirt in my direction.
“Go eat that guy! He’s much tastier and easy.”
Fuck, don’t call me easy (even though I was).
Oh god.
The monster turned its head and started to sprint toward me.
Goddammit at least finish off your prey. Haven’t you learned anything from watching thrillers? If you don’t kill them they’ll come back to kill you later!
Oh shit.
As it got closer to me, I raised my leg and kicked it with all my strength. I had focused most of my EM-waves in that region, so hopefully, it does some damage.
Whoosh.
That was the wrong sound effect, it should’ve been something like—clang.
Because my leg smashed straight into what felt like steel.
Bruh, don’t judge a book by its cover. Shit looked soft as hell but I might as well have kicked a brick wall. That did not feel nice.
My leg was a bit sore.
On the bright side, it looked like my attack actually caused some pain in the creature since it stopped and comically held its side for a little while.
Clara rushed in from behind and sliced at its torso.
Slash.
The blade managed to dig itself in, frying the monster’s insides, but it noticeably wasn’t enough.
Ah…
