Chapter 28
The Revenger turned around and slammed its thick arm right into Clara’s body.
Thump.
Crash.
She once again slammed into a nearby tree. There was a slight clacking sound before the tree ripped itself from its stump. The bushy leaves near the top rained down like snow as the entire tree began to fall over. It ripped branches and leaves from nearby friends as it crashed down dramatically. Some light actually managed to sneak itself in from the opening.
That must have hurt.
I’m surprised that Clara was so durable.
The creature stood still for a short moment before turning back to me again.
Oh god, not again.
Surely, I can conjure something. Anything that might help me fight this unfairly built monster. A sword? A spear? Something, please!
Nothing but air appeared in my hand (well, not even air appeared to be honest).
The Revenger charged at me.
Shit.
I knew a few types of martial arts from something in the past. I guess if there’s any time it’s going to come in handy it’d be now. Still, they weren’t exactly designed for fighting against semi-permeable fantasy monsters. Luckily, it was pretty obvious when telegraphing its attacks.
Krav Maga—that was probably the best choice for now.
The creature swung its oversized arm at my face. There was no space for me to move. The only opening was underneath its arm.
I quickly ducked down and planted one arm on the ground.
I could feel the breeze brush against my back as I twisted out of the way. The creature’s torso was now only centimetres away.
My body wasn’t in a great position so I took a second to adjust myself.
With some breathing space, I swung my leg and struck its ankle. Clang.
Fuck, that thing is rock-solid.
It had already retracted its arm and was preparing to swing at me again. However, it was actually easier for me to manoeuvre on the ground since it gave me more space and control.
It punched directly downward—something that was easy to see.
Pivoting from my ankle, I rolled to the side and evaded its obvious attack. I landed in the grass, turning my head to look back at the monster. I caught sight of Clara for a moment and saw that she was still recovering from the previous strike. It really must have hurt.
Leaning against my back, I raised my leg and kicked it straight in its torso.
I put a decent amount of power in the upward kick. There was a loud thump as the Revenger fell backwards into the grass. A cloud of dust flew into the air as it smashed into the ground. A sudden pain travelled all through my leg—shaking from the impact.
Ah, this was painful.
“Clara! Cut off its head or something!”
I’d watched enough anime to know the generic weak point for most of these fantasy monsters.
Heaving herself, she raised her blade toward the monster. However, it managed to slowly pull itself up.
Suddenly, there was an explosion in the middle of its throat, spraying grey dust and smoke everywhere. A white mist filled the air as it fell back down in pain. Looking at the path and direction of the damage, it was clear that it was the result of a sniper rifle (or magic weapon) of some sort.
I guess Hyocal is actually doing something.
I got up and ran toward the monster. I needed to keep it down for long enough so that Clara could easily cut it down.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I grabbed its arm and pinned it down with as much force as I could. Wasn’t sure how attached it actually was to the rest of its body, but I hoped that it would work effectively as a lever to immobilise it somewhat.
“Clara, hurry up! Kill it now!”
“I got it, you idiot!”
She raised her sword and slashed right down against the monster’s neck. It easily cut through, slicing the head clean off of its body.
As it was beheaded, another bullet shot into its head, causing it to explode on impact. A huge cloud of mist filled the air after the second impact. There was a small whirlpool forming from all the debris and unidentified wind that was floating up.
I need to make sure there’s no foreshadowing of anything else bad.
Clara continuously cut at its body in an attempt to stop it from regenerating. Her blade danced in the air, slashing the monster again and again.
Suddenly, there was a loud crinkling sound coming from the bush.
Oh god.
Peering its head through the shrubbery, I caught sight of something quite unpleasant. With a face that only its mother could love, this situation had just doubled in the number of problems (literally). A little trail of smoke followed it as it stumbled toward us.
“Fuck, there’s another one! What do we do, Clara?”
“We need to get this Life Bulb before we go!”
“When is it going to drop that?!”
“I have no idea! I’ve been slashing at it for so long! You! Stick your hand through its chest and try to grab something!”
“Are you sure it’s even in there?!”
“I have no idea! But there’s nothing else we can do!”
Fuck. Fuck. Alright.
With a flurry of several strikes, she clawed open a hole in its chest with her flawless blade. My vision was almost completely blocked by all the smoke in the air, but I took note of its body position and stuck my arm straight into where I hoped its ‘heart’ lay.
Feeling through what could only be explained as a moist cloud, I felt around trying to feel anything that resembled what a Life Bulb might be.
Come on! Surely there’s something!
Jumped up, Clara was forced to turn her attention to the other Revenger.
“Rin! Get it already! I can’t hold off this other one for long.”
Fuck. Where was this shit?
Clara was desperately slashing the other monster.
I could feel the monster’s body regenerating around my hand. Disgusting.
I dug through like I was looking for a needle in a haystack.
Wait.
A needle in a haystack?
