Chapter 54: Chapter 55: Tanjiro's Transformation
Noon
Feng Yu arrived right on time to deliver Tanjiro's meal.
"I wonder how Tanjiro is doing..." Feng Yu thought to himself.
He understood that this kind of forced training was the most mentally torturous. If Tanjiro couldn't handle it, Feng Yu feared he might give up and remove the weight from his body.
But to his surprise,
Feng Yu spotted Tanjiro beneath the waterfall.
At that moment, Tanjiro's face was pale, like a candle flickering in the wind, about to extinguish at any second.
He was muttering continuously, "Nezuko, Nezuko..."
Seeing this, Feng Yu nodded. He was pleased that Tanjiro had endured the torment of the water without removing the stone from his body.
With a swift leap, Feng Yu rushed to Tanjiro's side and pulled him to the shore.
By this point, Tanjiro's mind was starting to fade. Feng Yu immediately took out a healing pill and shoved it into Tanjiro's mouth.
Soon, Tanjiro's complexion started to brighten, and he slowly opened his eyes.
"Senior Feng Yu?" Tanjiro asked, his voice filled with confusion.
"You did well, Tanjiro," Feng Yu said with a smile.
"You didn't remove the stone from your body to avoid the water's force; instead, you persisted until now. That's impressive!"
"Continue with your training like this, and when you no longer need the stone and can breathe through the Water Breathing techniques without being affected by the flow, that's when you will have completed your training."
"At that time, I will pass on to you the remaining forms of Water Breathing, created by me and Senior Giyu."
"Thank you, Senior Feng Yu!" Tanjiro quickly expressed his gratitude.
"Remember, don't be afraid of injury. As long as you have breath, I'll be here to save you," Feng Yu said reassuringly. "Just focus on getting stronger. Don't worry about anything else; I'll always be watching over you."
Feng Yu then opened the lunch he had brought, and the aroma of food filled the air.
Tanjiro's stomach grumbled as the smell reached his nose.
"Go ahead and eat."
Tanjiro hungrily dug in.
"This... This tastes amazing, Senior..."
"Looks like you're starving. It's worth it though, since I made this nutritious meal myself!"
Feng Yu watched Tanjiro eat, feeling a sense of satisfaction. After all, this was the first time he had ever truly cooked a meal in this world.
He had even caught a wild boar from the mountain for this!
"Senior, I've never eaten something so delicious. What's this dish called?"
Tanjiro asked with curiosity.
"Hmm, this dish is called Red-Braised Pork. Take your time eating; there's plenty more, don't worry!"
Feng Yu pulled out another portion of food from behind him, revealing more of the delicious Red-Braised Pork.
The well-balanced fat and lean meat were coated in a vibrant red sauce that masked the wild boar's flavor, with green onions sprinkled on top. As Tanjiro took a bite, the pork sizzled in his mouth, releasing its rich juices.
"Red-Braised Pork... What a strange name..."
Tanjiro said, trying to recall if he had ever heard of it before.
"Well, as long as you like it. I was worried you might not enjoy it..."
Feng Yu chuckled.
Soon, Tanjiro had finished his meal.
"Thank you for the meal, it was delicious!"
...
Afterward, Tanjiro resumed his afternoon training.
Just like in the morning, the focus remained on enduring the force of the waterfall's flow.
Watching Tanjiro train so diligently, Feng Yu couldn't help but think back to when he himself had trained here...
Or rather, how he had hardly attempted such grueling training.
But then again, he had a cheat skill...
Feng Yu left, leaving Tanjiro alone beneath the waterfall.
Days passed, and after a week of continuous training, Tanjiro finally removed the stone from his body.
"Progressing fast. I originally thought this would take you much longer," Feng Yu said, patting Tanjiro on the shoulder.
At this point, Tanjiro's entire demeanor had changed. Gone was the youthful, inexperienced look; instead, he exuded a mature aura, as though he had weathered many storms.
"Once you've fully mastered Water Breathing and all of its forms, if there's time, I'll also train you in the Total Concentration Breathing technique."
"Alright, hurry up and continue your training. Time is tight, and you must grow stronger with every passing second."
Feng Yu said seriously.
"Yes, Senior Feng Yu, I'm going now!" Tanjiro responded with determination.
He immediately went back to the base of the waterfall and began adjusting his breathing. However, the irregular force of the water disrupted his rhythm every time.
Feng Yu stood quietly on the shore, watching Tanjiro repeatedly adjust his breath.
"Tanjiro, really feel how the water flows across your body!" Feng Yu called out.
Tanjiro, upon hearing this, closed his eyes and emptied his mind, focusing only on the flow of water touching his skin.
Time passed slowly, and the sound of the water surrounded him.
"Whoosh, whoosh..."
Tanjiro's breathing gradually grew calmer, and the rhythm of Water Breathing began to emerge.
The sound of the water was loud, but it felt like everything was in slow motion.
"The flow of water, free, changing... gentle..."
Tanjiro's mind echoed the words that Urokodaki Sakonji had once told him.
Cough, cough!
Tanjiro suddenly coughed, and his budding mastery of Water Breathing was abruptly interrupted.
He felt uncomfortable and, when trying to regain his focus, found his mind too restless to settle.
"No, I can't rush this... I need to calm my breath, slowly..."
Tanjiro's breathing slowed, becoming more like flowing water.
But soon, his body felt odd, and he was interrupted again.
"My lungs... they hurt..."
Tanjiro groaned, clutching his chest.
Once the pain subsided, he tried again to enter the state he had achieved earlier, but as soon as he did, the feeling slipped away.
Days of training passed.
Tanjiro's will remained unshaken. With each failure, his understanding of Water Breathing grew deeper.
"Good, Tanjiro, it seems like you've learned how to merge with the water. Next, I'll teach you the Eleventh and Twelfth Forms of Water Breathing."
"Watch closely."
Feng Yu began to demonstrate.
Tanjiro watched with full attention. When Feng Yu performed the Eleventh Form, he appeared on a calm lake, so still it seemed as if nothing could stir the water. Then, in an instant, he shifted, and Tanjiro saw him standing amidst raging ocean waves, with powerful surges crashing outward from him.
Tanjiro could feel the immense power behind the move.
Soon, Feng Yu finished demonstrating, and Tanjiro tried to imitate it, but failed.
There was no form, no breathing; he merely swung his sword in a simple arc.
"Tanjiro, first you must understand that the Eleventh and Twelfth Forms are all about absolute defense and absolute offense. Your breathing is off, and your movements are wrong. Now, focus on these two techniques, and I'll personally guide you through them!" Feng Yu said, determined.
From then on, Tanjiro underwent rigorous "training" at Feng Yu's hands.
Every day, Tanjiro's body was covered in bruises, obviously inflicted by Feng Yu, but with the help of the healing pills, Tanjiro would be revitalized after each round of "training."
Day after day.
Tanjiro's progress was rapid.
Until, one month later, Xiao Hei brought news that the training came to a halt.
