Chapter 53: Chapter 54: Tanjiro's Training
Feng Yu clapped his hands, and in one swift motion, he leapt into the air, performing the Wind Fluttering Rain Swallow technique, leaping through the air to Tanjiro's side. With a quick grab, he lifted him and jumped to the shore.
"Brother Feng Yu, what happened?" Tanjiro asked, a bit confused.
Just a moment ago, he had been sitting with his eyes shut, enduring the relentless force of the waterfall's flow, and now he was on dry land.
He couldn't help but admire the power of Feng Yu.
"No worries, I just thought I'd change things up for you," Feng Yu replied with a smile.
Tanjiro looked at the smile on Feng Yu's face and felt a sense of unease.
"Brother Feng Yu... be gentle..." he muttered, recalling a time in the past when Feng Yu had worn the same smile.
"Do you think I'm someone you can mess around with?" Feng Yu shot back, flicking Tanjiro's forehead.
"Ah... it hurts... it hurts..." Tanjiro quickly covered his forehead, wincing.
"Alright, listen up. I've come up with a great idea to help you deal with the waterfall's flow," Feng Yu said. "Right now, in your current state, even sitting on that big rock is hard, let alone controlling your breathing and blending with the water."
Feng Yu continued. "You need to overcome this issue first."
"Brother Feng Yu, what should I do?" Tanjiro asked earnestly.
"Good. It looks like you're ready," Feng Yu said, nodding. "The first thing is to fix the problem of being affected by the water flow."
He pointed to a large stone nearby. "That stone over there."
Tanjiro followed Feng Yu's finger and saw a massive stone, probably weighing around fifty to sixty pounds.
Tanjiro's back, hands, and feet were soon tied with stones.
"Brother Feng Yu..." Tanjiro felt the weight on him, his body feeling firmly anchored as if immobilized.
"Good, that's exactly what I wanted," Feng Yu said with satisfaction, looking at Tanjiro's predicament.
"Now, let's see how you handle this!" Feng Yu grabbed Tanjiro and tossed him onto a large rock below the waterfall.
"Good. You look like you won't move around much now..." Feng Yu observed Tanjiro struggling to sit up and nodded in approval. "Tanjiro, you need to get used to the force of the water. Once you're no longer affected by it, you can remove the stones. I'm not asking you to master Water Breathing in a short time, but you have to get used to the flow of water!"
Tanjiro, with his body heavy and strained, nodded, despite the discomfort. "Yes... Brother Feng Yu..."
"Remember why you're doing this. It's a tough training, and when you feel like giving up, think about why you first came to me and Urokodaki-sama..." Feng Yu's tone grew serious. "No one gains strength in a day. It's through constant effort, like me and Urokodaki-sama, who've worked far harder than you..."
He paused, then added, "I'll leave you to it. I'll bring you food around noon."
After that, Feng Yu left, leaving Tanjiro alone beneath the waterfall, enduring the pounding water.
"To fulfill my first dream... Nezuko... I'll definitely turn you back into a human..." Tanjiro's resolve solidified, his goal now clearer than ever. He closed his eyes and let the water wash over him.
In the distance, Feng Yu, sensing Tanjiro's progress through his spiritual energy, nodded to himself.
"Almost there..."
He made his way back to the cabin.
"You're back. Take a break," Urokodaki Sakonji said, noticing Feng Yu's return.
"Tanjiro can't be rushed. If he's too hasty, it'll ruin his foundation..." Urokodaki added, looking concerned.
"Don't worry, Urokodaki-sama. As long as I'm here, Tanjiro won't get hurt. Even if he's down to half his life, I can pull him back," Feng Yu replied confidently.
After all, he had healing pills, and even if those didn't work, he had other remedies. Plus, Tanjiro had taken a Bone Marrow Pill the day before, boosting his strength enough to handle the waterfall's flow.
Enduring the waterfall wasn't just a physical training but a spiritual one. The constant water pounding on the body was meant to cultivate a deep sense of calm. Achieving this level of stillness was incredibly difficult. But if Tanjiro endured it, not only would his spirit grow stronger, but his breathing techniques would also improve.
"He's not as fragile as you think," Feng Yu cut off Urokodaki before he could finish.
Urokodaki quietly observed Feng Yu, then glanced at Nezuko. After a moment, he said nothing.
Feng Yu was conducting an experiment. He aimed to make Tanjiro stronger than in the original story, preparing him for the final trials ahead. He was curious to see if Tanjiro would meet Zenitsu Agatsuma or Inosuke Hashibira.
If they met, it would mean the world was capable of great changes. If they didn't, it would still be fine, as Tanjiro's strength would be greater, and he would grow faster.
While Feng Yu relaxed, sipping his tea in the cabin, Tanjiro was far from calm.
"So painful... so tiring... so uncomfortable... I just want to leave here..."
A flood of thoughts overwhelmed Tanjiro's mind.
The only sound he could hear was the constant rush of water.
"It feels like there are countless ants crawling on my body..."
Tanjiro's will began to weaken. He felt himself sinking deeper into a dark pit, unable to escape.
He didn't know how much time had passed, but eventually, in the darkness, Tanjiro thought he heard someone calling his name.
"Big brother!"
"Tanjiro!"
"Child!"
...
"Who... why does the voice sound so familiar?"
Tanjiro tried to find the source of the voice, but the darkness enveloped him completely.
"Big brother, don't give up!"
"We are always with you!"
"Tanjiro, remember what I told you, never give up!"
The voices grew louder, and a beam of light appeared in the endless darkness.
"Rokuta, Takeo, Hanako..."
"Nezuko... Mother... Father..."
"Everyone..."
Tanjiro's tears flowed freely as he spoke.
At that moment, all the family members he had lost appeared before him.
"Child... You've worked so hard..."
"I miss you all so much..."
Tanjiro, in that moment, was like a child, longing for the warmth of his family.
He collapsed into the arms of his mother, Kie Kamado, crying bitterly.
Time passed—how long, he didn't know—before Kie gently patted Tanjiro's back. "Child, it's time to go back... Nezuko is still waiting for you..."
Hearing Nezuko's name, Tanjiro's resolve solidified.
"That's right... Nezuko..."
"I can't stay here anymore!"
At that moment, the darkness faded away.
In the real world, Tanjiro suddenly opened his eyes, shedding his earlier helplessness, and finally became one with his training.
