Chapter 196: Chapter 196: A Promise with Xiao Wu
"Alright, let's get some sleep!"
As Bibi Dong and Mu Chen left one after another, Flender stretched, relieved.
"Who would have thought, after all our worries, that even the Pope of Spirit Hall couldn't match him," Liu Erlong remarked, pride shining in her eyes as she looked in Mu Chen's direction.
Liu Erlong wasn't the only one with such pride. Xiao Wu felt the same, as did Zhu Zhuqing, Ning Rongrong, Meng Yiran, and many others who admired Mu Chen.
Whoosh!
A swift movement caught their attention as two figures streaked toward Spirit City.
"Isn't that the Dragon Snake Couple?" Flender exclaimed in surprise.
Shortly after, another group of four figures flew past in the same direction.
"It's Sword Grandpa, Bone Grandpa, my father, and Prince Xue Qinghe," Ning Rongrong observed, recognizing them instantly.
Then two more figures rose into the air.
"Even Shui Bing'er and Shui Yue'er came," Zhu Zhuqing added.
"It seems a lot of people care about him," Xiao Wu noted with a smile.
The group didn't notice an elderly man standing in the distance, watching everything. As the last of the figures departed, he murmured, "A 13-year-old, already a Rank 93 Titled Douluo… Quite the prodigy. And now, he's sworn brothers with Xue'er. But if he learns Xue'er's true identity, how will they face each other? Will they become enemies? Friends? Or perhaps something more?"
---
Knock, knock, knock!
Later, when Mu Chen had already retired to his room, there was a soft knock at the door.
"Who is it?" he asked, slightly drowsy.
"It's me, Xiao Wu. Are you awake?" came Xiao Wu's gentle voice from outside.
"I was asleep. Can it wait until tomorrow?" Mu Chen replied, still feeling the fatigue from his battle with Bibi Dong.
But Xiao Wu's voice softened as she spoke, "There's something on my mind, something I'd like to tell you."
Whoosh!
With a wave of his hand, Mu Chen unlocked the door with his spirit power and sat up on the bed.
Xiao Wu entered, a look of deep thought on her face.
"What's on your mind?" Mu Chen asked.
"You already know my identity, don't you?" Xiao Wu started, her gaze earnest.
Mu Chen nodded, recalling that Xiao Wu had shared her true origins back when they were at Nuoding Academy. She had assumed he was a spirit beast in disguise like herself.
"Mu Chen, there's something I haven't shared with you—about my family," Xiao Wu said.
"Go ahead," he encouraged.
Xiao Wu shared her family's story, about her father's early death and her mother's sacrifice. Mu Chen already knew that her mother, a ten-thousand-year-old spirit beast, had been killed by Bibi Dong.
"Brother, tonight you had the chance to kill her. Why didn't you?" Xiao Wu asked, confusion and pain in her voice.
"Because killing her isn't the solution," Mu Chen replied calmly.
"Why not? Do you… care for her?" Xiao Wu's tone held both doubt and a trace of sadness.
"No, it's not like that," he assured her. "It's because she's the Pope of Spirit Hall. If I killed her, Spirit Hall would retaliate against us and our Tang Sect. It would mean war. And with the two great empires possibly joining, the entire continent would plunge into chaos. Innocent people, both human and spirit beast alike, would suffer. I'd rather avoid such a conflict."
Xiao Wu thought about his words, but something still troubled her. "Is that really the only reason?"
Mu Chen sighed. "There's more. Whether people like it or not, Spirit Hall does help keep some order. Its spirit masters have curbed the influence of dark spirit masters, and in some ways, it keeps the continent more peaceful. That's a fact we can't deny."
Mu Chen didn't mention the fact that Bibi Dong was Xue Qinghe's (Qian Renxue's) mother. Killing her could deeply affect their sworn brotherhood.
"But she killed my mother," Xiao Wu whispered, her voice thick with sorrow. Tonight, she had come here with the hope that Mu Chen might seek justice for her mother.
"Xiao Wu… If your mother were still here, she wouldn't want you to live a life consumed by hatred. Spirit masters hunt spirit beasts for spirit rings. It's the way of this world, like rabbits eating grass or humans drinking water. They all seek to survive," he said gently.
After a moment of silence, Xiao Wu looked at him and asked, "Brother, do you love me?"
Mu Chen chuckled. "Isn't that obvious? Though you call me 'brother,' you're actually my fiancée."
"If that's the case, could you not seek justice for your future mother-in-law?" Xiao Wu asked with a mix of hope and sadness.
Mu Chen hesitated, silently looking into her eyes.
For a moment, he remembered the saying: It's easy to advise others to forgive when you haven't suffered their pain.
"Xiao Wu," he said softly, "if I could revive your mother, would you be willing to let go of your grudge against Bibi Dong?"
Xiao Wu's eyes widened in surprise.
She had always focused on revenge; the idea of bringing her mother back had never occurred to her.
"Are you… serious?" she asked, her voice trembling with hope.
"Yes. There is a way, though it requires certain conditions and the right timing. When the time comes, I promise I'll do everything to bring her back. Until then, can you hold off on seeking revenge?" Mu Chen asked earnestly.
Xiao Wu hesitated, thinking deeply. She trusted Mu Chen, and if he was the one saying it, she believed him.
"If you can truly bring my mother back, I'll let go of my hatred toward her," Xiao Wu said after a moment, her voice filled with resolve.
"Good. It's a promise, then," Mu Chen said with a smile.
"One that I intend to keep," Xiao Wu replied, smiling back.
