Chapter 44: Chapter 44: "Falling into His Arms"

The final scene for Murong Fu was a complex and dramatic performance, marking his complete descent into darkness.

Set in the imperial palace of Licheng, Murong Fu fully embraced his villainy, ruthlessly murdering all of Duan Zhengchun's wives, including his own aunt, in front of Duan Yu and Wang Yuyan.

In the original storyline, Murong Fu kneeled to Duan Yanqing, renouncing his Yan heritage and betraying his loyal subordinates to gain the title of prince of the Kingdom of Li. However, the directors found this portrayal too jarring and inconsistent with the tone of Jin Yong's work.

"It's insulting to the audience's intelligence to reduce Murong Fu to such a shallow character," Zhou Yaowen had said.

Thus, the adaptation depicted Murong Fu as a calculating and composed strategist. Instead of groveling, he joined forces with Duan Yanqing to challenge Duan Zhengchun and his son. Although ultimately defeated by Duan Yu's miraculous mastery of the Six Meridian Divine Sword, Murong Fu's descent into madness was now framed as the result of relentless failures and his unyielding ambition.

This change gave the character a dignified edge, highlighting his cunning and determination rather than portraying him as a mindless schemer. It also amplified the impact of his final downfall, adding depth to his role as the primary antagonist.

The last shot focused on Wang Yuyan, her tear-streaked face silently lamenting her cousin's tragic fate—a poignant conclusion that left everyone on set deeply moved.

A Scene of Unexpected Emotion

What surprised the crew most was Liu Yifei's performance.

Despite being given leeway for her crying scenes, she delivered an emotionally charged portrayal, tears streaming down her face with genuine sorrow.

"She must've been infected by his performance," remarked Yu Min, pointing to Du Sheng, who was in full character as the deranged Murong Fu.

Zhou Yaowen nodded. "As her cousin and childhood companion, seeing Murong Fu in such a state would naturally evoke deep emotions."

"Cut!" Zhou finally called, his voice resonating across the set. "Perfect!"

The crew collectively exhaled, finally able to relax after an intense shoot.

Du Sheng stepped out of character, clearly satisfied with the results.

For him, Murong Fu's obsessive dedication to restoring his kingdom was both his strength and downfall. His failures stemmed not from lack of effort but from being overshadowed by others' protagonist halos.

The reimagined version of Murong Fu—crafty and ruthless—was far more compelling than previous portrayals, giving the character the grandeur and gravitas of a true antagonist.

Yu Min clapped her hands, praising the cast. "Liu Yifei's crying scene was breathtakingly beautiful, and Du Sheng's performance was outstanding. Everyone, take a break! This was Du Sheng's final scene—if anyone wants to say goodbye, now's the time."

Before she could finish, Liu Yifei, still teary-eyed, suddenly threw herself into Du Sheng's arms.

The unexpected gesture left everyone stunned.

While it was well-known that the two shared a good rapport, this was clearly stepping beyond professional boundaries.

"Kiddo, you're still in character?" Du Sheng teased, patting her shoulder. "In the end, you're still by your cousin's side—no need to cry."

Realizing her overreaction, Liu Yifei quickly pulled away, her face flushing a deep crimson. She glanced nervously at the edge of the set and froze.

Her mother, Liu Xiaoli, who had been watching with a faint smile, now wore a much more complex expression.

Meanwhile, Du Sheng was busy receiving congratulations from the crew and didn't notice the tension.

He handed Liu Yifei a jade flute, his on-screen character's prized possession. "I won't be around for your wrap party, so take this as a keepsake."

"Thank you, Cousin!" Liu Yifei beamed, carefully cradling the flute. Her joy was evident as she added it to her collection.

Feeling bold, she retrieved a hairpin—a prop from the show—and shyly offered it to Du Sheng.

The symbolic exchange of the flute and hairpin drew amused glances and knowing smiles from the crew.

Director Zhao Jian, who had just arrived, was puzzled by the subtle laughter. "What's going on here? Why does the atmosphere feel… strange?"

Zhou Yaowen smirked and replied, "It's just a cousinly bond, nothing unusual."

Behind the Scenes

Outside the set, Liu Xiaoli's expression grew increasingly conflicted.

Although she had hoped for the wrap-up of Du Sheng's scenes, signaling the end of his interactions with her daughter, seeing their exchange stirred mixed emotions.

But she reminded herself that time and distance would naturally diminish such attachments.

Back on set, the production resumed filming Duan Yu and Wang Yuyan's remaining scenes.

Meanwhile, Du Sheng prepared to leave but was stopped by Zhao Jian and Zhou Yaowen for a brief chat.

The duo praised his contributions, particularly the innovative fight choreography he had designed. His work had streamlined production, cutting three weeks off the original schedule.

"Your combat scenes were exceptional—both practical and visually stunning," Zhao Jian remarked, clapping Du Sheng on the shoulder. "It's rare to see someone with your efficiency and creativity in this industry."

Having established a strong foundation in the industry, Du Sheng knew the importance of maintaining good relationships. These two directors, with their extensive networks, would undoubtedly be valuable allies in the future.

Zhao Jian smiled warmly. "Honestly, casting you as Murong Fu was a bit of a waste. Next year, I'll be directing a major drama for Central TV. If your schedule permits, I'd love for you to audition—there's a role I think would suit you perfectly."

Du Sheng's eyes lit up. He had a good idea of which project Zhao Jian was referring to. Central TV productions were a golden ticket in the industry, guaranteeing widespread exposure and credibility.

"Director Zhao, if you call, I'll be there no matter the weather," Du Sheng replied with a grin.

His response drew hearty laughter, easing the bittersweet atmosphere of parting.

After bidding farewell to the cast and crew, Du Sheng left the set with Wang Yaoyang, looking ahead to the next chapter of his journey.
