Chapter 39: The Exiled Young Girl Goes on a Diplomatic Mission
After much consideration, I decided to create a road to the southwest. According to Simon, there is a town called Bitterley in the territory of Earl Razlow to the southwest of Clarinton.
Since it’s not under the Southberry Marquisate, it’s less likely to be obstructed by Bolta or the Tarclay Trading Company. Moreover, there is a Demon Forest between Clarinton and Bitterley, so no direct road connects the two cities. This means that traveling between them would require passing through several towns and detouring around the Demon Forest.
Additionally, Simon has a sort of trade privilege in the Razlow territory, which is also valid in Bitterley.
Given these favorable conditions, there’s no reason not to choose Bitterley!
So, I gathered ten goblin skeletons to start the road construction and went to the back gate.
“I’m going to build a road to the southwest, but I need you to find the best route. Look for a path similar to the one leading out from the front gate. Bi-6 will guide you to the edge of the forest, and find the most level route possible.”
*Clank, clank.*
The skeletons made clattering noises as they disappeared into the forest.
Even with such vague instructions, they managed to do the job well. Skeletons are really amazing.
Now, should I inform Earl Razlow beforehand?
How should I do that? We don’t have carrier pigeons. Maybe use bird skeletons for delivering messages?
…That might be too risky. They could be mistaken for a prank.
So, I suppose the best option is to bring Simon and meet them in person.
With that thought, I headed back home.
A month later, I arrived in Bitterley with Simon, Patrick, and Marie after crossing the Demon Forest.
Of course, we didn’t travel by carriage. We used skeletons of Forest Deers. These Forest Deer skeletons, being used to navigating the forest, handled rough terrain effortlessly. Thanks to the preliminary scouting by the skeletons, we managed to find a relatively smooth route and arrived in just five days.
I was also pleasantly surprised that we only encountered wild boars twice despite crossing the Demon Forest.
This is actually great news.
It means that if we don’t get attacked more than this, we might not need to build walls and moats on both sides of the road, though it’s not as safe as regions without monsters.
By the way, the wild boars we encountered were dismantled by the goblin skeletons. We turned the bones into skeletons and sent the remaining materials, using the newly made wild boar skeletons, back to Scarletford.
Oh, and this time, I plan to enter the town mounted on the Forest Deer skeletons.
According to Marie, if you don’t ride in a vehicle, there’s a chance you might be suspected of not being a noble.
Riding a skeleton might seem odd, but based on the reactions of people we helped in Clarington, it appears that ordinary people see skeletons as rare and unusual rather than something sinister.
If that’s the case, it might not cause a big problem and could even make us seem more noble.
Marie mentioned that nobles often want to show off rare things to assert their status.
It’s odd to think we managed to enter Clarinton with a cart, though.
So, with that in mind, we approached the gate visible beyond the forest.
Just like Clarinton, Bitterley is also surrounded by high walls facing the Demon Forest.
However, there seemed to be no guards at the gate. Instead, a voice called out from above.
“Hey! Where did you come from?!”
“Simon, respond.”
“Yes.”
Simon answered loudly.
“We come from Scarletford! The person with us is Lady Olivia, Baroness of Scarletford!”
“What!? Scarletford!?”
“Yes! I am Simon Chapman, a former merchant from Clarinton! I’ve now relocated to Scarletford! I would like to speak with the town mayor!”
“Hmm… Understood! Baroness! I apologize! We are not authorized to open this gate! We will immediately contact the town mayor! Please use the noble’s gate on the other side!”
“Baroness?”
“Yes, it’s fine.”
“Understood. Soldiers! We’ll take care of it!”
With that, we made our way slowly to the other side of the town.
Upon arriving at the noble’s gate, we were met by a line of strong soldiers waiting for us.
A middle-aged man in more ornate attire stepped forward and saluted us. He was likely the leader of the soldiers.
“Welcome, Baroness Olivia of Scarletford, to Bitterley!”
“Thank you for the warm welcome.”
“Uh, may I ask… is the deputy here?”
“He is not. My father passed the title to me and instructed me to govern in his stead.”
“I see… Do you have any form of identification?”
“Of course. Here it is.”
Upon showing the proof of nobility, the leader immediately saluted again.
“Thank you! A carriage is being prepared, so please follow me.”
“Very well.”
And so, we entered the town of Bitterley.
