Chapter 47: The Banished Young Lady Attends a Dinner Party
On that evening, a dinner party was held at the mayor’s mansion. There were about a dozen attendees, with my group consisting of myself, Marie, Simon, and Anna, while five guests, including Lord Edward’s family, attended on behalf of Count Lazlo.
The format of the dinner was a bit unusual. I sat at a head table with Lord Edward’s family, while the other guests participated in a buffet-style standing dinner.
The reason for this format was because of my age.
You see, the main purpose of this event was socializing. Typically, such gatherings would have a formal seated dinner followed by a ball. However, since I’m only nine years old, participating in a ball is out of the question. Additionally, in a formal seated dinner, moving between seats is considered a severe breach of etiquette, so in order to allow for free socializing without having a ball, they opted for this style.
The table was laden with more food than we could possibly eat, and I picked up the wine glass that had been given to me for the toast.
Oh, by the way, in this world, children drinking alcohol isn’t seen as unusual. But I won’t drink it.
“Baroness, if you would, please.”
“Of course.”
I glanced around the room.
“Let us toast to the continued prosperity of Scarlettford and Lazlo.”
“Cheers!”
At my lead, everyone raised their glasses, and I took my seat once again. The maids immediately came to serve the food, distributing portions from the large dishes.
“Baroness.”
“Yes, Lord Edward?”
“Thank you for lending us the skeletons.”
“Oh, you already mentioned that earlier. Please, don’t worry about it. Thanks to them, the roads were opened more quickly, which is a great help to us as well.”
“But those skeletons are said to be incredibly capable. The workers speak very highly of them.”
“Yes, I believe so. They’ve been working wonders in my territory as well.”
“Did those skeletons help build the roads in your territory as well?”
“Yes, they did.”
“I knew it.”
“They’re also doing farm work, spinning thread, and various other tasks.”
“Farm work and spinning thread, you say?”
“Yes. They can’t do tasks that require much dexterity, but for anything else, they’re quite capable. However, they aren’t very strong physically.”
“I see…”
Though Lord Edward seemed impressed, he also appeared as though he had more to say.
“Is something the matter, Lord Edward?”
“Well, actually…”
“Yes?”
“I was wondering if you might continue lending us the skeletons…”
“That’s perfectly fine.”
“Yes, I thought it wouldn’t be possible… What?”
“I said it’s perfectly fine.”
“Re-really!? Then, how many would you be able to provide…?”
“How many do you need?”
“Well, if possible, we could use about ten.”
“Understood. Shall we keep the same tax arrangement as before?”
“Yes, absolutely! Thank you so much!”
Though Lord Edward expressed his gratitude, I was equally thankful. Not only would I be paid, but the skeletons would also return with new skills learned.
After talking with Lord Edward for a while, another man approached, casting glances in my direction.
Oh, I think this man was at the ceremonial event. He’s the president of Keynes Trading Company. He’s tall and slender, with long green hair tied back, wearing a monocle. His appearance gives off the impression of a sharp, calculating individual.
“Lord Edward?”
“Hm? Oh, forgive me. Baroness, this is Stephen Keynes, a baronet and the head of Keynes Trading Company.”
“Ah, a representative of the trading company. I am Olivia Ainsley.”
“My name is Stephen Keynes. It is an honor to meet the beautiful Baroness.”
“Oh my, how kind of you to say. Especially to a young girl like me.”
“Not at all. A baroness who manages a territory within the Demon Forest so splendidly is far from ordinary. I was also moved by your words earlier. For a noble of the renowned Ainsley family to seek closer ties with Count Lazlo for the sake of the people—truly a model noble.”
“Oh? Do you think so?”
I answered, maintaining a composed facade.
Hmm, from the way he’s speaking, could it be that my biological father had a poor relationship with Count Lazlo? Or is it just that he had a bad reputation?
“Indeed, I am deeply impressed. If it is someone like you, Baroness, I believe Lazlo and Scarlettford can walk forward together.”
“Well, no conflict is a good thing, don’t you agree?”
“Exactly. That’s why our Keynes Trading Company would like to do business in Scarlettford. What do you think?”
“You’re welcome to come anytime. However, it might not be that profitable just yet.”
“Oh? What do you mean by that?”
“Scarlettford is a territory that’s only just starting to develop. While we now have roads suitable for carriages, the threat of monsters is still present. Keynes Trading Company might find it difficult to generate large profits at the moment.”
“I see. However, we are interested in the skeletons you’ve lent to the Howard family.”
“Oh, is that so? But I’m not planning to expand much more at the moment.”
“Understood. I will ensure to present you with a proposal that you will find satisfying.”
“I look forward to it.”
“Yes, please expect great things.”
With that, Stephen bowed and walked away, heading over to speak with Simon.
Hmm. As expected, the head of the top trading company in Count Lazlo’s territory is sharp and calculating. If I’m not careful, he might take advantage of me.
“Baroness.”
“Ah, Sir Jack.”
I switched my focus as I was addressed by Sir Jack, the head of security.
