Chapter 48: The Banished Girl Inspects the Road
After speaking with the president of Sumner Trading Company, a local business in Bitterley, it was clear that he was also very interested in the skeletons.
It seemed that the skeletons were captivating to them as well.
Engaging with people outside made me realize that maybe my territory could thrive solely on this skeleton rental business.
At the moment, I’m only lending them to Lord Edward, but even that alone brings in twenty-five large gold coins a month, or 12,500 Sherangs. That’s enough to hire 2,500 servants at the Southbury Marquis’s estate.
I can’t say for sure about other territories, but for a small village like Scarlettford, that income feels like an incredible fortune.
Moreover, if I increase the number of skeletons, I can expand the number of clients, and I doubt any competition will arise.
After all, in *Maho-Ike*, dark holy magic was even rarer than light holy magic, and only the villainess Olivia could use it.
That being said, the current lack of skeletons means this is nothing more than a pipe dream for now.
Anyway, having completed all my business in Bitterley, I’m now traveling back to Scarlettford by carriage.
Since we hurried on the way here, I plan to take my time on the return trip, traveling at the pace of an ordinary traveler to inspect the road for any problems.
It usually takes about four days to traverse the Scarlettford road, and I’ve established three campsites along the way.
As I’m thinking about this, the carriage stops, and I hear a voice from outside.
“My Lord, we’ve arrived at the entrance to the third campsite.”
Ah, it seems we’ve reached the first of those campsites. Alright, let’s check things thoroughly.
I move to the coachman’s seat to survey the surroundings.
A wide road branches off from the main highway, and a signpost reads “Third Campsite.” Beyond that, a five-meter-high wall and a gate come into view, with two goblin skeletons standing guard.
“Simon, let’s go in.”
“Yes.”
As our carriage approaches, the skeletons open the gate, allowing us to pass through.
The interior is neatly leveled and includes a parking space for five carriages. Of course, the campsite is surrounded by high walls, with goblin skeletons stationed at four points atop the walls.
The walls themselves are built using a rammed earth technique, where soil is packed into wooden frames, making them sturdy enough to resist any minor assault.
With walls this high, the campsite should also block the view of monsters, greatly reducing the risk of being attacked. Though, of course, it wouldn’t do much against monsters with keen senses.
“Is the well… over there?”
I step down from the carriage and approach what appears to be the well in the corner of the campsite.
“Simon.”
“Yes.”
Simon opens the wooden lid and lowers the bucket. After a moment, I hear a splash of water, and Simon pulls the bucket back up.
Inside, the water is crystal clear.
I scoop some with my hand and bring it to my lips.
“Mmm. Delicious.”
Well water is great because it’s warm in winter and cool in summer.
“Alright, let’s camp here tonight.”
“Yes, I’ll start preparing.”
And so, we decided to spend the night at the third campsite.
Meanwhile, at Mortimer’s, Muriel’s favorite café, she and her entourage were enjoying tea and chatting about Olivia.
“Lady Muriel! Lady Olivia was truly wonderful, wasn’t she?”
“Right? Can you believe she’s only nine years old?”
“Indeed! Now I understand why Lady Muriel calls her a genius. And to think she can use magic as well?”
“Yes. She uses magic to summon and control skeletons, which are black, bone-like dolls.”
“Ske… skeleton?”
“Yes, it seems they’re made from the bones of defeated monsters.”
“I’ve never heard of such a thing.”
“But it’s truly remarkable. Apparently, those skeletons did most of the work building the road as well.”
“Really?”
“Yes. And they not only defeat monsters but also spin thread!”
“That’s amazing!”
“Oh? Lady Muriel, does that mean Lady Olivia creates those… skeletons by using the bones of monsters?”
“That’s correct.”
“So the more monsters she defeats, the stronger she’ll become?”
“Exactly. By the time she’s an adult, she may command an army of thousands.”
“Wow!”
“How wonderful! A grown-up Lady Olivia must be so dashing and cool.”
“Without a doubt! She’s already so refined, even at her age.”
“She certainly is!”
Muriel and her companions giggled and chattered excitedly as they enjoyed their tea.
