Chapter 49: The Banished Girl is Attacked at Night
“Marie, the skeletons caught a wild rabbit. Let’s roast it.”
“As you wish.”
“Wait! You’re going to cook the meat!?”
When I handed the wild rabbit to Marie, Simon’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Simon, you have to eat meat while it’s fresh.”
“But… we’re in the middle of the cursed forest! If we do that, won’t it attract monsters…?”
“That’s true.”
“Then!”
“Lady Olivia, if that’s the case—”
“Marie, that’s the whole point of this test. We need to figure out what kinds of monsters are attracted and identify any weaknesses in this campsite.”
“But…”
“If the merchants get attacked while staying here, no one will come back. That’s why we’re deliberately luring them in. The monsters aren’t a problem since the skeletons and I can handle them.”
“I understand…”
“Alright then, Marie. I’m counting on you.”
“…As you wish.”
Marie reluctantly agreed, though she seemed somewhat dissatisfied.
And so, we built a fire and enjoyed roasted wild rabbit for dinner.
As night fell and some time passed, I had Simon and the others rest for the next day.
“No monsters yet, huh?”
“Yes, but isn’t that a good thing?”
“Well, yes, but it’s not much of a test if nothing shows up.”
Marie smiled wryly at that.
“You’re working too hard, my lady.”
“Huh? You think so?”
“Yes. Even though you’re quite mature, you’re still just nine years old. You need proper sleep to grow tall and strong.”
“Oh… well, I get it. The skeletons are on watch, so I guess I’ll sleep.”
“Yes, please do.”
Suddenly, one of my bird skeletons approached me. It spread its wings wide, swaying back and forth, signaling me urgently.
“My lady?”
“Looks like a monster is coming. I’ll go check.”
I quickly got up and ran out of the tent.
“Lady Olivia! Let me accompany you! I can still use water spirit magic—”
“It’s fine. The way it’s signaling means it’s just one monster. Besides, I already know where it is. You know I won’t lose to an ordinary monster, right?”
“Even so…”
“Stay here. I’ll be fine. See you!”
“My lady!”
I headed to the gate by myself and climbed the wall via the stairs next to it. Under the moonlight, I saw a large bear lumbering down the road, heading straight for us.
It’s big… and I’ve never seen a monster like this before.
As I watched, the bear noticed me and started charging in my direction.
For a moment, I thought it might leap at me, but it stopped about two meters from the wall, pacing back and forth while looking up at me.
It stood on its hind legs, placing its paws on the wall, but it couldn’t climb up.
“Groooar!”
Angry, it roared at me.
“Grrrrr…”
The bear circled around, inspecting the wall, then suddenly jumped, trying to scale it. It managed to scratch the wall but fell back to the ground.
“Gooooooar!”
Frustrated by its failure, it roared again.
Its aggressiveness… yeah, this is definitely a monster.
The bear monster continued wandering around, hitting the wall here and there with loud thuds.
Its power was impressive. The wooden frame of the rammed-earth wall began to crack, but that framework was just for support during construction, so it wasn’t structurally important. Inside, the wall was packed with solid earth, so it wouldn’t collapse from this.
“Groooaaar!”
The bear monster smashed up the wooden frame, and soon enough, it reached the gate. It slammed its front paw into the gate with a loud crack.
Creak!
The thick wooden gate groaned under the force.
“Grr? Grrrrrooooar!”
Realizing this, the bear started pounding the gate repeatedly. And then—
Boom!
With a loud crash, the wooden gate shattered.
“This is bad!”
I hurriedly bound the bear monster’s soul.
“G-189! G-190! Attack!”
Two goblin skeletons swiftly approached the immobilized bear monster and dove under its belly.
“Grrrrrooo… gaaah…”
The goblin skeletons drove their knives into its soft underbelly. The bear monster bled profusely and soon collapsed.
“G-189, G-190, once it’s confirmed dead, begin dissection. Bi-83, dispose of the organs and meat one kilometer west of here. G-191, fetch water from the well and wash away the blood.”
Clack, clack, clack.
“G-192 and G-193, repair the gate.”
Clack, clack, clack.
The skeletons immediately began their work. I left the scene to them and returned to the tent.
“My lady?”
“Marie, everything’s taken care of. I also figured out the campsite’s weaknesses, so I’ll talk to Will and the others about it when we get back.”
“I see.”
“Yep. So you can go back to sleep now. I’m going to bed too.”
“As you wish.”
“Goodnight.”
“Goodnight, my lady.”
And with that, I crawled back into my tent.
