Fallout: (Nuclear)Winter Is Coming

Chapter 5: Ch.5: Home Sweet Home?

With the hatch open, all I saw was darkness below but I steeled myself and began descending the ladder.

As my foot stepped on the rocky ground below I found myself in a large cavern and a small blinking light in the darkness.

"Shit it's so dark and I didn't bring a flashlight. If I had a pipboy I could use the light to navigate..." I tip-toed toward the small blinking light and when I approached it, I heard a series of clicks and the cavern began lighting up from flood lights near the ceiling.

I could now see where I was going and I gotta say I was impressed by what I saw.

The blinking light was actually a vault terminal but instead of a pip-boy port and a button, there was a hand scanner.

In the wall of the back of the cavern was a Vault door that was still sealed.

The door looked slightly smaller than I remember vault doors being but I moved my attention back on the hand scanner.

I approached it and placed my hand on it and it beeped after a light move across my palm.

*beep beep*

Red light began flashing and a siren went off. I could heard the hissing of the vault door opening.

The cog-like door was pulled inward and then rolled to the side, leaving an opening that was big enough for a small car to pass though.

A yellow catwalk extended from inside and then connected to the platform outside the door.

"This is it... Everything depends on what I find in here." I took my first steps up the ramp and then onto the extended catwalk.

As I entered I saw things that filled me with joy.

"This is my vault from Fallout 76!" I said out loud due to my excitement.

Inside the entrance they were guard posts and wall mounted turrets that moved back and forth as they kept a lookout for hostiles.

The thought my own turrets would turn against me was an invasive thought that was unwarranted because as I walked past them, they remained unresponsive.

"The place is just as I left it the last time I played." I said in awe as I walked up a flight of stairs.

This was my Vault Lobby. The very first section of my vault.

Past the guard posts were a flight of stairs that lead to a room that was designed as a guard barracks. Bunk beds and lockers as well as a few weapon racks.

There was also a decontamination arch that people have to pass through as they pass the guard posts. 'Good to know it still works.' I thought as I passed under its mist.

On both sides of the barracks were doors that led to different areas of the vault.

The right door led to the residential quarter and the left led to the atrium and other important places.

I wanted to go left but I decided to go right into the residential area. I just wanted to see if all my stuff was still in every section of the vault. Because if it was, then I was in a much better situation than I could hope for.

I went through the door and inside was a large space that had a patch of grass in the middle. On both sides of the space were doors that led into the suites.

Each suite was decorated as if a family were going to live out of them. They all had bathrooms, bedrooms and a kitchenette attached to the living room where a couch and tv were located.

There were only four of those suites but there was a second level at the end of this section of the vault that also had a cafeteria. On the second level was also the Overseers suite and I went all out on my decorations there.

As I entered my suite I found everything as I had designed it. A vault-tec bed was in my bedroom and there were lockers and trunks where I could keep things. There was a bathroom and a kitchenette as well as a living room.

All of my things were there. There were posters that lined the wall that showed comic characters like Grognak the Barbarian, The Silver Shroud, Mistress of Mystery as well as Unstoppable! posters.

There was a desk that had a terminal and an item displayed shelf that had the holotape games on it.

All in all I was happy with it but the real good stuff was further in the vault.

After finishing my tour of the residential area I went back out and crossed the Lobby to the other door leading to the Atrium.

The Atrium had been designed as a communal area. It was broken into sections such as a work out area that had all the excercise equipment.

The next area of the Atrium was a stage and audience seating. The stage had every instrument in the game and there was over 30 audience seats in front of the stage.

The next area was up the stairs on the left side of the Atrium. This was a bar that had four vendor protectrons that served drinks and off to the side were Nuka Cola machines.

The Atrium was designed for public use as well as a place where the Overseer could address the residents.

At the highest point of the Atrium was the Overseer's office. Going past the bar area, there is a laser door that I was able to walk through without issue.

I made my way up a flight of stairs and then turn into a longer corridor.

At the end of the corridor on the right was my office and on the left were two doors that each lead into new sections of the vault.

I got to the end of the hall and the door to my office opened allowing me inside.

Like other parts of the vault it was exactly as I designed it.

In the middle was an overseer's desk and terminal. File cabinets lines one side of the room and magazine racks lined the other.

The magazine racks had every magazine issue available in game. And the bobblehead stand next to those had all the bobbleheads.

I tried interacting with some magazines and bobbleheads but nothing happened.

I could however read the magazines but they are just that now, normal magazines.

I exited my office and turned to the two other doors.

One lead to the Server and Reactors rooms and the other lead to the storage facility.

I decided to save the storage for last as I made my way into the server room.

The server room had 3 main rooms and had a backdrop with a bunch of vault terminals and servers. The backdrop was an area that couldnt be entered in game but I noticed a new door that led into that area.

The center of the room was designed as a meeting area for the VIPs of the vault where they could discuss business in privacy. There were two brotherhood of steel meeting tables pushed together that had monitors in front of the chairs. There was also a projector on the table aimed at a wall.

The room on the right was the reactor room. Inside were two vault tec super reactors tied to the vaults's electrical system.

I had designed them to alternate power if one of them fails, the other will kick on and keep power in the vault.

Was this at all necessary in the game? Nope. I just liked adding fun features like that to my builds. Kind of like roleplaying, but hey this helps me out now.

Seeing that my power situation is good I moved to the room on the left side.

This was the cryo facility. Inside there were dozens of cryogenic beds which I thought was a cool idea at the time. Like this section of the vault was a nod to fallout 4 but now I could actually use this facility if I want to.

Which I was already thinking I might.

After seeing everything I walked over to the area I had never been in until today. The server backdrop which was only aesthetic in game now has a door leading into it.

My curiosity was killing me.

I entered the new door which now existed and entered the server area. There were tons of blinking lights and beeping sounds that echoed throughout the room. I walked over to one of the terminals and began opening some of the files.

My eyes shot open in alarm at what I was seeing. This room was connected to vault tec and all thier reports and status of all the vaults were right in front of me to see.

"Holy shit..." I scrambled behind me and grabbed some of the blank holotapes that were scattered across the room.

I popped in one of the blanks and started extracting a video file that was labeled in an interesting way...

Once the data had been copied to the holotape, I ejected it and put it into my inventory.

The terminal was not able to display video sadly but my system did not share that limitation.

I found the holotape in my inventory and then pressed play.

A video screen appeared in my vision and I watched with horror as an experiment was being carried out in a particular vault.

I wanted to retch my stomach contents out. Vault tec was pure fucking evil. In the video, a person was infected with the FEV virus and mutated into a grotesque creature.

A door open and the creature was allowed into a cell where a pregnant woman was being held.

They were testing to see if the mutant still had any latent human responses after transformation such as sympathy or something towards a pregnant woman.

The answer? It did not. It ripped her to pieces and ate her.

I looked back at the terminal and questioned why it even existed and what the hell I was supposed to do with the information I now had access to.

"I'll deal with this later..." I shook my head left the server room entirely. I had more important things to worry about, like my survival.
