Chapter 37: the Riven
As Lyra turned to leave, she saw a figure watching her from the shadows. The figure was tall and slender, with eyes that glowed like embers and a smile that seemed to hide a thousand secrets.
"Who are you?" Lyra asked, her voice firm but cautious.
The figure stepped forward, its movements fluid and almost ethereal. "I am Riven," it said, its voice low and husky. "And I have been waiting for you, Lyra."
Lyra's instincts told her to be wary of Riven, but there was something about the figure that seemed...familiar. As if she had seen Riven before, but couldn't quite place where.
"What do you want?" Lyra asked, her hand on the hilt of her sword.
Riven chuckled, its eyes glinting with amusement. "I want to help you," it said. "I know the Dreamrealm better than anyone, and I can guide you through its twists and turns."
Kael stepped forward, his eyes narrowed. "Why should we trust you?" he asked.
Riven's smile grew wider. "Because I have something you want," it said. "Something that will help you on your quest to save the Dreamrealm."
Lyra's curiosity was piqued. "What is it?" she asked.
Riven's eyes seemed to gleam with excitement. "It's a map," it said. "A map that will lead you to the next artifact on your list. The map is hidden in a place where only I can take you."
Lyra hesitated, unsure of what to do. Part of her wanted to trust Riven, but another part of her was screaming to be cautious.
"What's in it for you?" Lyra asked, trying to stall for time.
Riven's smile grew wider. "Oh, I think you'll find that my reward is well worth the risk," it said.
And with that, Riven turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Lyra and Kael to ponder their next move.
