Chapter 38: attack on riven
Lyra's instincts told her to attack Riven, to force it to reveal its secrets. She drew her sword, its blade shining with a faint, otherworldly light.
Kael grabbed her arm, his eyes wide with alarm. "Lyra, wait!" he said. "We don't know what Riven is capable of."
But Lyra was beyond reason. She shook off Kael's grip and charged after Riven, her sword flashing in the dim light.
Riven didn't seem to notice Lyra's attack. It simply kept walking, its movements fluid and almost ethereal.
Lyra struck at Riven's back, but her sword seemed to pass right through it. Riven didn't even flinch.
"You can't hurt me, Lyra," Riven said, its voice low and husky. "I'm not what you think I am."
Lyra spun around, her sword still clutched in her hand. "What are you, then?" she demanded.
Riven turned to face her, its eyes glinting with amusement. "I'm a reflection," it said. "A reflection of your own subconscious mind."
Lyra's eyes widened as she realized the truth. Riven was a part of her own mind, a manifestation of her own fears and doubts.
"Why are you helping me?" Lyra asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Riven's smile grew wider. "Because I'm a part of you," it said. "And I want to see you succeed. But you have to trust me, Lyra. You have to trust yourself."
Lyra hesitated, unsure of what to do. Part of her wanted to trust Riven, but another part of her was screaming to be cautious.
As she stood there, frozen with indecision, Riven reached out and touched her forehead. Lyra felt a surge of energy, a flood of images and emotions that threatened to overwhelm her.
And then, everything went black.
When Lyra came to, she found herself back in the Garden of Dreams, surrounded by the familiar sights and sounds of the Dreamrealm. Kael was standing beside her, his eyes filled with concern.
"Lyra, what happened?" he asked.
Lyra shook her head, trying to clear the cobwebs. "I don't know," she said. "I think Riven showed me something. A vision of the future, maybe."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "What did you see?" he asked.
Lyra hesitated, unsure of how to describe the vision. "I saw a great battle," she said. "A battle between light and darkness, with the fate of the Dreamrealm hanging in the balance."
Kael's face was grim. "We have to get moving," he said. "We don't have much time."
