Gaming in the Underworld: Βασιλιάς

Chapter 30: Apophis

Bradley Jonah Corvinus was born not two months after the defeat of Gaia. Things had significantly calmed since then and Nyx had given birth to my son and heir.

Due to his parents' divinities Bradley was born as a Titan. Though he didn't have a domain yet Nyx was already suspecting that he would inherit the domains I had taken from Zeus.

He grew much faster than my other children much to my displeasure. Hardly a week in and he was already looking as old as his half sisters.

The twins were relatively normal given that they were conceived when neither Selene nor I were divine. That didn't mean that I didn't bless them with as many powers as I could without violating their wish to remain mostly human.

Things were quiet, boring even. I spent most of my time training Bradley so that he could take over the throne to Olympus. The other Olympians supported this.

I personally think that they were just tired of me threatening them with death every time they stepped out of line.

'How do I even go about looking for Apophis? It's not like I can just go to Egypt and start kicking down doors till I find answers.'

A notification chime made me open my system. A new message had popped up telling me that I had a new quest. Strangely enough this was the first quest I had gotten in a while. I wasn't even sure how the quest system even worked.

New Quest Received!

'The Darkest Night' (Main)

[ ] Travel to Egypt and visit the Great Pyramids

[ ] Learn about Apophis

[ ] Learn the truth about your father

[ ] Kill Apophis

??

??

'A straight forward quest, fantastic… now I have a direction to travel to.'

"Selene, Lena, do you girls want to go kill a god?"

"Thought you'd never ask." Selena smirked.

"I was getting bored just lazing about all day. Would you like to come with us, Nyx?"

"Who are we killing?"

"The Egyptian god of darkness and chaos."

"Perfect, I've been meaning to check on the other divines who hold domains over darkness. How are you adapting to your new domain by the way."

I formed a swirling mass of darkness in my hand. A few hellhounds formed out of my shadows and the room got a little bit darker.

"I'm getting used to it… I still don't get why you gave it to me instead of passing it on to our son."

"Because it'll be more fun this way."

I sighed, "Whatever, let's go. The sooner we kill this asshat the sooner I can leave this troublesome universe."

"You're actually planning on leaving?" Nyx asked.

"Not permanently, Luna and Aurora are having fun with kids 'their age' and I'd rather have them here where they can have relatively normal lives rather than traveling the multiverse with me."

"What about our son?"

"Bradley is my heir, I don't think the twins want anything to do with the throne so when it comes to it, he'll be inheriting the throne of Olympus."

"At such a young age?" Lena said with a quirked lip.

"He's a quick study, he's also the only one that was born with divinity. The Olympians will accept him more than anyone else that was granted godhood."

"Fair point, we're dallying now though so let's save this conversation for later and get going."

"Has anyone been to Egypt?"

[Scene Break]

Let me reiterate.

I hate sand, beaches were alright since water to wash off said sand was only ever a few feet away. The fucking desert though… hardly any water and even if you wore clothes that were supposed to prevent sand from getting in, the stupid grains ALWAYS somehow found a way in. Anakin was right, sand is irritating.

"You could always just vanish the sand." Selene suggested with a smirk.

"I could… but a long time ago in another life a good friend of mine told me 'it's part of the experience'."

"So you're putting yourself through this?" Lena asked.

"For now at least, it's not at that point yet where I'm irritated enough to get mad at inanimate objects." I replied.

We had been wandering around the desert now for several hours. The minimap showed that the quest location was in this area. Nyx had decided to stay in the hotel suite until I called for her. Something about 'too much sun'. I think she just didn't have the patience to search and would much rather just fight the guy.

We eventually found ourselves at the entrance to a magically hidden cave that went into the ground.

There were ruins a few meters away. None of us could read hieroglyphs so we didn't bother reading the presumable 'warning' on the crumbling wall.

The cave wasn't too large so I couldn't use my wings and it was too low for swords. That left us going in armed with the classic, guns and knives.

Thankfully I had a literal arsenal with enough ammo to win several wars in my inventory so I wasn't worried. We also had our godly powers so whatever lurked in this cave didn't stand much of a chance.

We didn't run into our first hostile until we got deeper into the cave. The dark was hardly an issue for our senses seeing that we had all been hybrids before ascending to divinity.

The scarabs were a surprise. I wasn't afraid of bugs but endless swarms of the chittering assholes made me see the beauty of 'kill it with fire'.

Lena stabbed a few with her arrows while Selene had a blast shooting them with her dual Glock 18s. Me, I just unleashed a fire storm from the Elder Wand that turned the sand on the floor to glass. No point in testing my accuracy in this sort of situation.

The next enemies were mummified assholes. The bodies looked like they belonged to grave robbers. Noting that there was possibly a curse in this cave or some sort of poison that turned regular people into mummies we pushed forward.

The mummies were very easy to deal with. They were basically just extra fragile zombies that exploded into dust when killed and a burst of fire or a shot to the head killed them just fine.

The problems started once we found ourselves in some sort of underground pyramid. It looked nothing like the Egyptian pyramids. They looked like a combination of Mayan and Egyptian.

The shape was too blocky, but the hieroglyphs were all Egyptian. The stone used for the pyramid was also made out of a darker stone that looked like it was greasy. A foul smell reached our noses making Selene and Lena cringe.

I was familiar with this smell. It was the smell of rot. When we finally found our way into the main chamber of the pyramid I spotted a familiar sight.

There in the center of the room was a ritual table. Around the table were half rotten bodies of robed figures. This was the room I was taken to as a baby.

The room that my mother and father had rescued me from. There were still scorch marks from where my mother fought Apophis.

"These bodies have been dead for a while…" Selene mused while poking at a corpse.

"Nearly thirty years or so." I supplied surprising Selene and Lena.

"How is that possible?"

"How is any of us possible, some kind of magic or supernatural phenomenon." I replied

"If this is magic then it is obviously of the darkest order. These bodies still retain their warmth." Lena muttered.

"Warmth?"

"Yes, they're still warm. Like they died seconds ago."

"They smell of rot, that shouldn't be possible then."

"So you have come back boy…" an accented voice spoke from the darkness.

Everyone was on guard immediately while scanning for threats. A lone figure stepped through a swirling mass of darkness. I frowned when I saw the figure step into the light.

The figure's body was ragged, skin rotting and clothes hanging in tatters. I felt rage boil my blood when I recognized the face.

"Brave of you to come and face me yourself."

"Oh? You don't like the form I'm occupying?" The dark god smirked.

"Desecrating my fathers remains, trying to get a reaction out me… quite pathetic an attempt." I sighed.

Selene and Lena's eyes widened when I mentioned my father. Nyx flashed into existence next to me, I had sent her a mental message.

"So this is the once great Apophis. How the mighty have fallen." She drawled.

Apophis frowned as if insulted, "I am still great, my might is unmatched. I have worked in the shadows for centuries sowing chaos and strife. My power has grown!"

"Yet you are in such a pathetic state, any last words?" I prepared a condensed ball of destruction magic.

"You can not defeat me! I am chaos embodied! I am the darkness! I am-

I didn't let him finish, I threw the ball of destruction at Apophis forcing him to block with a wave of darkness. Nyx shot a lance made out of earth at the dark god. Apophis screamed in pain as the lance struck him. Lena and Selene weren't idle.

They both threw their own magical attacks while simultaneously charging at the dark god with their weapons. Lena shot dozens of arrows that pierced Apophis.

Selene threw her dagger and followed it up with a hail of bullets from her twin pistols. Chunks of flesh were torn from the dark gods possessed body.

I felt a pang of anger at having to destroy my fathers body to kill the dark god. Shoving it back down I summoned Sky Scorcher to my hand from my inventory and threw it at the dark god.

Apophis screamed when the spear pierced his gut. A large wave of darkness exploded from his body and formed into a menacing face.

"This is not over! I sha-

"Oh fuck off." I interrupted his villainous rant.

Using my control over the void I ripped the darkness to shreds making the dark god scream some more.

My fathers body fell to the floor having been cut off from the dark gods' control. Apophis let out one final shout of anger before disappearing into the void. Around me Selene, Lena and Nyx looked around waiting for Aphopis to reappear but the dark god was gone.

"That was a bit anticlimactic…" Selene muttered.

"I'll say." Nyx added.

I shrugged, "I'm probably the strongest person in this world. He was just a god, a weakened one at that. I wasn't going to drag it out to a long fight that could collapse this entire space on top of us."

"He was using your fathers body?"

"Yeah…"

"Distasteful." Lena sighed.

"At least now I can give him a proper burial."

"Not going to attempt to bring him back?"

"While I can, he has been dead for decades now. I'm not going to disturb his rest."

"A wise choice." Lena nodded.

I walked over to my fathers corpse and reversed the damage returning him to a more peaceful looking state. Then I placed him in my inventory so that I could bury him in a proper spot. I turned to the women and nodded.

"Let's go, I want to reduce this place to ash."

Everyone grabbed hold of each other and Selene put a hand on my shoulder. In a flash I teleported us all back to the surface. Giving Selene a look she understood and pulled everyone a few hundred meters back. Once they were clear I opened my wings and flew up to the sky. Taking out Sky Scorcher I gathered void energy into the tip and condensed it till I had enough to level a city block. Pointing the spear at where the buried ruins were I shot the crackling ball of energy at the ground. It left my spear shooting forward with blinding speed. When it hit the ground nothing happened at first. Then a massive explosion that turned sand to glass shook the whole desert. Heat washed over me from where I hovered and I turned to look at the women. Nyx had raised a barrier of dirt to protect them from the shockwave. She gave me a thumbs up and I smiled.

Turning my attention back to the explosion I continued to watch as a dome of black fire and arcs of lightning extended out from the epicenter of the blast. It expanded for a few more seconds before collapsing into itself with a whoosh of blistering air. When the dust settled a large crater of melted sand was all that was left of Apophis' ruined temple. I nodded to myself, satisfied with the results and flew back to my women.

"Impressive destructive powers."

"I held back quite a bit, I didn't want to blast a hole to the earths core."

"Nonetheless it was impressive. Your control has also improved."

"It better have, I had all that time to train." I chuckled.

"What now?" Selene asked.

"We could explore Egypt, there is still plenty to see here that's not tied to the supernatural world."

"That's true, I always wanted to see what made mortals gather to this literal barren landscape."

"Exploration it is." Lena sighed.

I looked at the platinum blonde. "You'd rather do something else?"

She shook her head, "I'm not a fan of the heat."

I chuckled, "No one likes the heat, let's go then. Cairo isn't too far away."

"Blake, we can teleport. Nothing is far away." Nyx deadpanned.

"Sometimes it's boring being a god… what's the point of a journey if we can't experience traveling to destinations?"

"Do you really want to walk all the way over there with all this sand?"

"Fair point, let's teleport." I concede.
