Ghost Slayer: My Wife Kanao

Chapter 17: ch17

The soft moonlight fell gently, imprinting on the girl's delicate face. Her pink and purple eyes were slightly squinted, and as the wind blew, her black hair lifted with it, while the emerald green butterfly hairpin on her head fluttered its wings like a real butterfly resting there.

"How did you come by the Nichirin Blade in your hand?" the girl asked softly. Even when speaking to a ghost, Kanae Kocho's voice remained gentle, like the warm spring sun.

"Sister, do you even need to ask?" Behind her, Shinobu Kocho narrowed her eyes. The presence of a Nichirin Blade in the hands of a ghost was self-explanatory.

"I picked it up," the boy under the bamboo hat replied calmly.

"Lie," Shinobu retorted angrily, glaring at the ghost opposite her. Although the bamboo hat hid his appearance, she could already imagine the disgusting visage of this ghost. To her, all ghosts were disgusting, without exception.

Kanae was silent for a moment before speaking gently, "Nichirin Blades, for members of the Demon Slayer Corps, are often more precious than life itself." Her simple words carried a clear meaning: Nichirin Blades are not so easily obtained.

Sam shrugged, knowing that explaining would be futile. After all, he was a ghost now. Expecting a member of the Demon Slayer Corps to believe a ghost's words was like believing in fairy tales.

"I'll give you another chance to explain," Kanae said, looking at the boy in front of her with pity. Although he had become a poor creature like a ghost, ghosts were once human. It was truly sad for a ghost to lose its humanity.

Sam remained silent, raising his head and narrowing the golden eyes beneath his bamboo hat. "Are you going to make a move?" he asked softly.

Kanae gently caressed her Nichirin Blade. Her Nichirin Blade was quite special, with an orange clover-shaped guard, an emerald green handle, and a peach-colored blade. "Can I save you?" she murmured, shaking her head. "What I can do now is free you from the chains of sorrow."

Her white fingers caressed the blade, emitting a faint, joyful sound. Feeling the tension in the air, Sam's expression grew serious.

Kanae Kocho was a 'Pillar' capable of fighting against the Upper Moon Two, Doma. Although not as strong as the Upper Moon One, she was still beyond his current ability to contend with. He could feel the terrifying aura emanating from the seemingly soft girl across from him.

In the next moment, Kanae moved. With her movement, the surrounding flowers seemed to bloom instantly. His eyes widened, closely watching her every move.

In the blink of an eye, Kanae's figure appeared in front of him, with her cold sword light slashing toward him. Sam gritted his teeth, swinging his sword violently. The fiery red arc was unleashed, but it cut through nothing, and the incoming sword seemed to vanish.

Then, suddenly, the beautiful sword light reappeared near his cheek, moving so fast he couldn't react. It was as if it hadn't been there a moment before, and then it was just there.

All he could do was barely move his head.

"Crack!"

With a crisp sound, the bamboo hat on his head was cut off instantly, and the sharp blade brushed past his cheek. Pain shot through his face and then his shoulder.

"Crack!"

The sharp blade cut through the flesh of his shoulder, finally stopping at the hard bone. It was a golden hand pressing tightly against the blade, preventing Kanae's Nichirin Blade from severing his arm.

The girl's pretty brows furrowed slightly. The hand holding the sword's hilt strained to withdraw, but Sam's ghostly hand firmly grasped the sharp blade, with no intention of letting go.

He knew from the start that he couldn't match Kanae Kocho in a straightforward fight. If he allowed her to use her Nichirin Blade freely, his head would likely be severed within a few moves. So, he waited for her Nichirin Blade to target his head.

Every member of the Demon Slayer Corps knows the weaknesses of ghosts and the methods to kill them from the moment they join. One of the easiest ways to kill a demon is to decapitate it with a Nichirin Blade.

Obviously, he had been waiting for this moment. It finally came, and he narrowly avoided a fatal blow to the head.

There are only a few ways to kill ghosts: Nichirin Blades, wisteria, and sunlight. As long as the Nichirin Blade was under control, it wouldn't be simple for Kanae to kill him.

"A smart ghost," Kanae said, her purple eyes staring at the young man, her gentle face carrying a touch of coolness. "But if you think you can beat me like this, you are completely wrong."

She spoke softly and kicked out her long leg like a whirlwind. Powerful energy poured into his body like a cannonball, and the boy could only let out a scream as he was sent flying.

His body collided with the alley wall, knocking it down instantly, and with more energy remaining, he continued to crash into the ground.

"Boom..."

A powerful muffled sound followed, accompanied by rising smoke. The slender figure of Kanae Kocho stood quietly on the wall, and with the moonlight's reflection, she looked like an elf.

"Ahem..."

As the dust cleared, Sam stood up from the ground in embarrassment. The powerful resilience brought by the ghost's body and its strong self-healing ability prevented him from losing his fighting power completely.

Standing up with difficulty, he pulled his hand from his shoulder, extracting the sword stuck there. He looked up at the woman standing on the wall like an elf under the moonlit night and laughed.

Kanae frowned. "You don't think that taking away my sword means there's nothing I can do to you, do you?"

Sam didn't speak. He simply wiped his lips with his hand, removing the bright red blood.

"As we all know, there are only a few ways to kill ghosts, and Nichirin Blades are one of them," he said softly.

"Sister, there's more than one Nichirin Blade, brat," came another cold voice. It was Shinobu Kocho who spoke, looking at the ghost mockingly. "And there's my Nichirin Blade."

Shinobu sneered and then looked at her sister, handing her sword over. "Sister, take the sword."

Kanae took her sister's sword, looking at Sam with pity in her pink and purple eyes.

"Heh-heh..."

The boy suddenly sneered. "When dealing with ghosts, you can never be too careful. Kanae Kocho, you are too careless. Too gentle."

Kanae frowned slightly. Was the other party lecturing her in this situation?

She opened her lips, wanting to speak, but the words didn't come out. Her expression changed drastically.
