Chapter 18: ch18
From the very beginning, Sam Miller was actually prepared to be killed. However, he did not give up on the chance of survival. With his current strength, he was evenly matched with Shinobu Kocho, but when compared to Kanae Kocho, who had become a "Pillar," he was completely outmatched.
If Kanae had taken him seriously from the start, he wouldn't have been able to withstand more than three of her moves before being beheaded by her Nichirin Blade, leaving him with no chance at all.
But now, he saw a glimmer of opportunity. And that chance was Shinobu Kocho.
In fact, his eyes had been on Shinobu from the very beginning, especially when she had impulsively attacked him. At that time, he had wanted to act. However, he quickly realized that Kanae deeply cared for her sister, and when Shinobu fought him, Kanae's hand never left her sword's hilt.
At that moment, it was impossible for him to actually do anything to Shinobu.
But now it was different. Kanae had just kicked him into the air, sending him flying, but at the same time, bringing him closer to Shinobu. Moreover, since the two had been fighting, he had deliberately moved to a farther location. Now, Kanae was far from Shinobu.
What's more, Shinobu currently didn't even have her Nichirin Blade.
So, when he bent down, stared at Kanae with his golden eyes, prepared to attack, and said, "You can't be too careful when dealing with ghosts. Kanae Kocho, you are too careless and too gentle."
While Kanae was guarding against him and focusing all her attention on him to prevent any surprise attack, he launched himself toward Shinobu like a cannonball.
"Damn it," Shinobu muttered as she saw the ghost rushing toward her, using her as a breakthrough. Though angry, she didn't lose her composure and floated backward like a butterfly.
Her purple eyes stared at the approaching ghost with a mix of anger and sarcasm. Her strength was initially quite balanced with the opponent's, but due to being human, she was much weaker in terms of raw power, coupled with the ghost's special abilities. In their previous confrontation, the opponent had exploited this weakness to gain the upper hand.
But if given another chance, Shinobu felt confident she could defeat him. After all, her speed was faster than his.
But now, this little ghost had actually used her as a breakthrough point. He truly didn't know life from death. Once her sister arrived, she would be able to kill this troublesome ghost immediately.
Only, Shinobu paid for her carelessness.
"Boom."
Accompanied by three consecutive gunshots, three bullets were aimed at her head, chest, and ankles, making Shinobu's face change drastically.
With extraordinary speed, Shinobu dodged the deadly bullets aimed at her head and chest but couldn't evade the one targeting her ankles. As the gunshots ended, Shinobu, moving at high speed, staggered and almost fell to the ground.
Although Shinobu hadn't completely lost her ability to resist, the shadow of the ghost was approaching her rapidly.
This change caused Kanae's expression to change drastically. Although she reacted immediately and ran toward her sister, she could only watch helplessly as Shinobu was shot and fell to the ground.
For the first time, killing intent permeated this young girl. She was paying the price for showing pity to this ghost. She should have listened to her sister; otherwise, her sister wouldn't have...
She had to reach her sister before the ghost did anything to her.
"Bang bang bang..."
The young man held the tip of the Nichirin Blade in his mouth and drew his hands to his waist again, holding two muskets already loaded in his palms. With a simple pull of the trigger, bullets faster and more lethal than arrows roared toward Kanae.
Firearms might be inferior for dealing with ghosts, but they were deadly when dealing with humans. Even someone as strong as Kanae dared not let lead bullets hit her body easily. After all, humans don't have the immortality of ghosts. If hit in a vital area, they would truly die.
"Clang clang..."
There was a burst of metallic sounds in the air. Kanae wielded her sister's Nichirin Blade and waved a silver-white arc.
"Ding ding ding..."
Bullets were blocked by her Nichirin Blade, without exception. However, Sam never pinned his hopes on firearms from the very beginning, nor did he think they could affect a "Pillar" master like Kanae. He was merely buying time.
And in the instant he fought for, he closed in completely on Shinobu, who had fallen to the ground after being shot.
The golden Oni Hand grabbed Shinobu without hesitation. Shinobu, shot in the leg and wrist, didn't lose her ability to resist and hurriedly swung her fist. However, Shinobu's strength was too weak, and hitting his ghost body with fists was useless. Almost within a breath, both of Shinobu's hands were pinned down by him.
At the same time, with a press of his palm, Shinobu fell into his embrace. Shinobu struggled desperately, but Sam's hands were like iron clamps, and the weak Shinobu couldn't break free at all.
"Damn it," Shinobu muttered, feeling ashamed and angry as the ghost hugged her from behind, her hands trapped by the ghost's and pressed against her chest, unable to move.
At this moment, Kanae also rushed over. Just about to strike, she stopped abruptly when she saw the musket's black barrel pressed against her sister's head.
"Let go of my sister."
