Chapter 21: ch21
When Sam Miller returned to the hotel, Kanao Tsuyuri was sitting quietly in the window seat. Sensing something, the girl suddenly turned around. Her exquisite face was very pretty, though sickly pale, and her purple eyes were as beautiful as stars. However, those beautiful eyes were empty.
"Sir..." Seeing Sam approach, the waiter hurried over, casting a glance at Shinobu Kocho, who was being carried unconscious by Sam. She seemed to be one of the two girls who had left with this gentleman earlier. It seemed like something was wrong.
The waiter wanted to ask about it but stopped himself as he glanced at the 500 yen in his palm. Wisely, he kept his mouth shut. What did any of this have to do with him? He let it go.
With footsteps passing by the waiter, Sam approached Kanao Tsuyuri. "Come with me," he instructed. The girl stood up like a marionette and followed him obediently.
He nodded, turned around, and prepared to leave. Dawn was approaching. He didn't know if his ghostly form, different from the world of "Demon Slayer," was vulnerable to sunlight. But at this moment, he had to consider it because it involved his survival, and he needed to find a place to hide from the sun.
Suddenly, a cold sensation in his palm made him look down unconsciously. There was a thin hand in his palm—Kanao's hand. He hadn't expected Kanao to be so proactive. It seemed, feeling his gaze, Kanao raised her head, looking at him with her beautiful purple eyes.
Although Kanao's eyes were still empty, he faintly sensed a touch of emotion in them. That touch of emotion could be called 'dependence,' and it was growing deeper.
He smiled, feeling an inexplicable sensation in his heart. It was a strange feeling, heavy yet comfortable. Probably, it was a sense of responsibility, he thought. As he pondered this, he unconsciously tightened his grip on Kanao's hand.
...
Walking through the city under the moonlight, a boy wearing a hat walked briskly ahead, while a girl followed with difficulty. After all, she was just an ordinary little girl, and it was challenging to keep up. If it weren't for the boy's large hand holding her small one, giving her some traction, this thin girl might not have been able to follow.
"Pant..."
Heavy breathing came from Kanao's nostrils. Although she could barely move, she remained silent, like a marionette, unable to express any thoughts of her own.
Soon, Sam noticed Kanao's heavy breathing. He looked down unconsciously at the girl, who was panting heavily, with fine sweat on her forehead, clearly weary and tired. He felt a little guilty.
Almost without thinking, he hoisted Kanao onto his back, while his arms clamped around the unconscious Shinobu Kocho.
"Hold onto my neck tightly," he whispered to Kanao on his back. A pair of delicate little hands wrapped around his neck, feeling a little cool.
He looked up at the sky. The soft moonlight was gradually fading, and faintly, a ray of sunlight was about to rise over the mountains. His time was running out. He had to find shelter quickly. The city's underground sewers would work, but he didn't like the smell there. The mountains outside the city were a good choice.
Running quickly towards the mountains, it wouldn't be difficult to find a hiding place at his speed.
...
Shinobu Kocho awoke faintly, feeling a tightness in her chest. Her eyes fell unconsciously on the arm clamping her tightly. It was that annoying ghost holding her, running with her.
"This ghost must be looking for a hiding place..." Almost instantly, Shinobu understood the ghost's purpose. This was her chance.
She only needed to act when the ghost found a hiding place, exposing him to the sun and eliminating this hateful creature.
So, she needed to be patient, recover her energy, and deliver a crucial blow at the end.
However, she froze immediately. A girl with the same purple eyes as her was looking at her. Although the girl was beautiful, she appeared hollow. Shinobu knew this girl; she was the one the ghost had taken to the restaurant earlier.
In Shinobu's view, the girl must have been coerced. So, Shinobu blinked, carefully placed her little hand over her mouth, and made a 'shh' gesture.
Then, Shinobu was stunned. The girl actually tapped the ghost on the head with her little hand and then pointed her finger at the ghost.
"Damn," Shinobu thought, looking at the little girl's actions. She cursed angrily under her breath.
