Chapter 23: ch23
A dark cave.
The bonfire burned quietly, occasionally crackling as the wood was consumed. Above the fire, a wooden frame held two fat chickens roasting. As chicken fat dripped into the flames, the fire flared up more intensely.
Beside the bonfire, a boy sat quietly, his bamboo hat resting beside him. A girl with purple eyes nestled quietly in his arms. Next to them, a girl in disheveled clothes, wearing the uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps, lay seemingly unconscious. Her clothes were in tatters for some reason, exposing much of her skin to the air, though the main parts were covered.
The cave was silent, except for the occasional crackling of the firewood. Suddenly, a scream shattered the silence.
"Papa! Mama... Ah!"
Sam Miller turned his head, looking at the girl with a terrified face. Her delicate features were now filled with pain and fear, making her seem less like a member of the Demon Slayer Corps and more like a helpless little girl.
"No, ah, ah, ah, ah..." The constant screams of pain filled the air.
Sam frowned and stepped forward to check on her, only to find she was still asleep. Judging by her current state, she was having a nightmare. He reached out a hand to gently shake her awake, but unexpectedly, the girl hugged him tightly.
"Sister...!! The demon ate my father and mother!!..." Her cries were heart-wrenching, filled with anguish.
Sam looked down at the girl who had just awoken from the dream, feeling a mix of pity and helplessness. She had obviously mistaken him for her sister, Kanae Kocho.
Gently, he patted Shinobu Kocho's head with his hand. "Wake up..."
The girl opened her purple eyes, her delicate face still showing traces of the fear she experienced in her dream. Immediately, she sensed something was wrong. What she was holding felt different from the soft body of her sister, who usually comforted her after nightmares.
She couldn't help but look up. What she saw was a pair of golden eyes.
"Ah!" she screamed, quickly pushing away in a panic. However, she couldn't push Sam away and instead fell to the ground. Struggling to back away, she found her feet firmly held by the ghost, making her unable to move.
"If you want to be crippled, keep moving," the ghost's faint voice warned her, and under the intense gaze of his golden eyes, she instinctively stopped.
She lowered her head unconsciously. Her leg and wrist, which had been hit by lead bullets, were now bandaged. Although, in her eyes as a doctor, the bandaging was unprofessional and quite ugly.
But that wasn't the main point. Her feet had been attended to, and the lead bullets in her ankles appeared to have been removed.
"Who did this?" Doubts arose in Shinobu's mind, and her eyes first fell on the "fool" Kanao. But seeing her doll-like, vacant expression, it was clear she couldn't have done it.
Which left only one possibility.
Could it be...
Shinobu felt she must be going crazy or hallucinating. A ghost bandaging a wound? This ghost would be more likely to devour her, not help her.
But aside from this ghost, who else could have bandaged her?
"You... bandaged me?" she asked, staring at the ghost.
Sam merely glanced at her indifferently. "I just don't want you to die so quickly."
"I see." Shinobu nodded, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. "You're just keeping me fresh for your next meal. You're afraid I'll die and spoil the ingredients, so you bandaged me?"
Sam couldn't help but roll his eyes at this. Why did Shinobu always assume he ate people? Was her brain made of pig's brain? Do ghosts always eat people?
However, after thinking about it, he realized that in the world of "Demon Slayer," except for Nezuko, who didn't eat humans or drink human blood, most ghosts couldn't resist their instincts.
It's no wonder Shinobu would have such thoughts.
"Stupid woman," he muttered, glaring at the girl who was trying to open her big purple eyes, annoyed.
"Really stupid."
Being called stupid by a ghost, Shinobu felt deeply insulted. It was bad enough to fall into a ghost's hands, but to be called stupid was too much.
"You ghost, you're really too much."
She sat up resentfully, wanting to say something to this hateful ghost, but felt a slight chill in her chest.
Looking down, her pretty face suddenly turned red.
"You pervert, die," Shinobu exclaimed, swinging her fist at the ghost she found extremely hateful.
