Chapter 29: ch28
The warm sunlight brushed over the gentle face, eyelashes fluttered, and eyes opened quietly. A sharp pain throbbed in her head.
The girl who had just woken up felt a bit disoriented, instinctively touching the sore spot on the back of her head. Suddenly, she remembered something.
"Sister..." she cried out, flipping over gracefully to stand on the ground.
Her pink and purple eyes scanned the area, but she couldn't see her sister anywhere.
"Damn..." Kanae Kocho gritted her teeth, worried about her sister.
At the same time, she had some doubts. Why hadn't the ghost eaten her while she was unconscious?
"Did something happen that prevented the ghost from attacking me?" Kanae murmured softly, a little perplexed.
However, she needed to find her sister immediately. She couldn't let the ghost harm her sister. She had already lost her parents; she couldn't lose her sister, too.
Bending over, she picked up her sister's Nichirin Blades from the ground. Her pink-purple eyes showed a touch of surprise when she noticed a piece of paper beneath the blades.
Picking up the note with some curiosity, she read: "Dear Kanae Kocho, your sister Shinobu Kocho will entertain me for a few days. Don't worry, I won't harm a hair on her head."
A message from the ghost?
Kanae narrowed her pretty pink-purple eyes. Although the ghost said so, how could she trust a ghost's words regarding her sister's safety?
She had to find her sister as soon as possible and take her back from that ghost. The thought of her sister staying with a ghost even for a moment made her uneasy.
Suddenly, sensing something, she raised her head unconsciously as a crow flew over and landed on her shoulder. The girl's delicate face instantly turned serious.
This was the messenger crow of the Demon Slayer Corps, used to convey missions or messages. For masters of the 'pillar' level like her, assignments were rare and usually very challenging.
This meant that the "master" had a task to convey to her and the other "pillars."
"My lord summons. All pillars must gather," the crow announced.
Kanae's pink and purple eyes froze instantly. All the 'pillars' being summoned together indicated something significant that required the presence of all the 'pillars.'
"What has happened?" Kanae wondered, squinting her eyes. She only wanted to find her sister as soon as possible, and now she didn't want to...
"Muzan Kibutsuji... has appeared!" the crow answered hoarsely.
Kanae couldn't help but clench the hilt of her sword. Muzan Kibutsuji. As a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, it was impossible not to know this name. It represented the ultimate goal of the Corps.
In other words, killing Muzan Kibutsuji was the primary mission of the Demon Slayer Corps.
Muzan Kibutsuji, the original demon who had survived for more than a thousand years, was the absolute ruler of demons. Self-proclaimed as a 'creature infinitely close to perfection,' he was the ancestor of demons, the strongest demon, and the only one capable of creating a multitude of demons easily.
Evil demons in this world couldn't spread like zombies; ordinary demons could hardly infect others. Only Muzan Kibutsuji possessed the ability to expand his kind.
Almost all members who joined the Demon Slayer Corps had been indirectly persecuted by the demons created by Muzan Kibutsuji. There wasn't a member of the Corps who didn't despise this demon.
And she, Kanae Kocho, had joined the Demon Slayer Corps to end this cycle of grief. To achieve this, she knew Muzan Kibutsuji had to be killed.
Kanae hesitated. When she and her sister had agreed to fight demons together, they had consciously accepted the sacrifice to protect the happiness of others. Now that the source of all this misery had appeared, she should leave immediately.
But she shook her head.
Although she wanted to rush over, she looked at the Nichirin Blades in her hand—her sister's blades. There was a barb at the tip, the scabbard was white, the blade, hilt, and guard were mint green, with the guard shaped like a four-leaf clover. "Evil demon" and "slayer" were engraved on both sides of the blade.
"No matter what, I can sacrifice for this, but my sister, absolutely not."
At this moment, she made a decision in her heart.
Kanae turned to the crow on her shoulder. "Tell my lord that Kanae Kocho has urgent matters to attend to and cannot go at the moment. Once resolved, I will depart immediately."
As the crow flapped its wings, the girl's figure disappeared.
She must find her sister as soon as possible.
