Chapter 30: ch29
π HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025 π
After eating the roast chicken, the girl patted her stomach with some satisfaction, but she felt as if someone was watching her. She suddenly raised her head and found that the ghost was looking at her. Her face flushed red.
"What are you looking at? There's nothing to see," she said, thinking of how the ghost had seen her pat her stomach, feeling extremely shy inside.
Sam Miller shrugged his shoulders and, with a hint of sarcasm, said, "I thought Miss Shinobu Kocho wouldn't eat it."
"You..."
Shinobu glared at the ghost with her big purple eyes, then turned her head angrily. "Fine, I, Shinobu Kocho, owe you a favor. Next time we meet, I'll spare your life."
"However, your life is now in my hands," Sam replied playfully.
"Then you can kill me? If I flinch, I won't be called Shinobu Kocho."
He smiled. "I'm not interested in you, a little girl who hasn't fully developed. If it was your sister, maybe. Or..."
"Why not introduce your sister to me as a way to repay the favor?"
Sam was only half-joking.
"You are the little girl, and your whole family are little girls," she retorted. "You nasty ghost."
"Besides... My sister wouldn't fall in love with a ghost."
Shinobu glared at the fool, crossed her arms, and tried to stand up, but a sharp pain in her leg and wrist forced her to sit back down.
Sam smiled and said nothing more to Shinobu, his gaze drifting to the campfire. He had come to this world suddenly, becoming a ghost and leaving his original life behind. Now he was a little confused.
Seeing the ghost suddenly become quiet, Shinobu unconsciously looked at him. She felt that this ghost was different.
Before, she hated ghosts the most, despising them all. But this ghost gave her a very special feeling. Although he made her very angry, the feeling of 'hate' gradually faded as they spent more time together.
Shaking her head to rid herself of these strange thoughts, she lowered her head and began to untie the bandage on her leg, made from her torn corset.
"It's ugly and unprofessional," she muttered to herself, starting to examine her own injuries. But then her eyes froze.
"Don't bother looking for it; the knife hidden in your shoe has already been removed by me," the ghost said calmly.
Shinobu looked up, a bit annoyed, seeing the knife in Sam's hand. Her beautiful purple eyes were full of anger. She turned away, not wanting to look at this annoying ghost. She was afraid she might lash out.
"Actually, we have no enmity or grudge. You don't have to be so hostile toward me, do you?" Sam shrugged, looking at Shinobu.
He hadn't provoked her before, so there was no need for Shinobu to harbor so much 'hate' toward him.
Shinobu turned to look at Sam, remaining silent for a moment. Finally, she spoke in a deep voice, "My father and mother were killed in front of me by ghosts like you."
"And from that moment on... I swore to cut off the heads of all ghosts, so I worked hard to learn how to sever a ghost's neck."
Sam smiled helplessly, understanding her pain.
Looking at Shinobu, who was clearly upset, Sam didn't know what to say.
"I'll let you go home after you recover from your injury," he said calmly.
"Home?" Shinobu froze for a moment, then shook her head. "I don't have a home."
The girl said stiffly, "Everything is gone. There's nothing left. I only have my sister..."
When talking about home, her mood became even more depressed.
"I'm sorry to bring up your sad memories, but it's all in the past, isn't it?"
"How could it be possible? What do you know?" Sam's words seemed to touch a raw nerve, and Shinobu's eyes were full of anger and hatred.
Her loud voice startled Kanao, who unconsciously grabbed Sam's sleeve.
"Father and mother were killed right in front of my eyes! Do you think I can live like nothing happened?! Impossible... how could I do it! Deceiving myself, pretending to forgetβhow is that any different from death?"
"I don't know what happened to you, and I can't understand the pain in your heart, because all this has already happened, and there's no way to change it. What I want to tell you is that your father and mother would definitely not want you to live in pain every day like this. You should have your own future; your parents must have hoped you would have a better life," he said, expressing his understanding.
"Father, no one knows what mother wants," Shinobu growled, her voice almost breaking into tears.
Sam didn't know what to say either.
Shinobu gritted her teeth and asked, "If someone important to you is killed, can you still live as if nothing happened? Can you do it?"
Seeing that he suddenly stopped talking, Shinobu lowered her head, feeling very depressed.
"What's wrong with me, telling all this to you, a ghost?"
"What do you, a ghost, know?"
