Chapter 2: Chapter 2- Meals and Plans
After a short taxi ride, they arrived at Mamori's home, a quaint, two-story house nestled in a quiet neighborhood. As they approached the front door, the soft rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze and the distant hum of the city seemed to fade away, replaced by a feeling of warmth and calm.
Mamori led him inside, where the sounds of cooking filled the air. The aroma of delicious food wafted through the hallway, making TJ's stomach growl in anticipation.
Inside, Mamori's mother, Mami Anezaki, was busy in the kitchen, a bright smile on her face as she worked. She looked up as they entered, wiping her hands on a towel.
"Welcome, TJ!" she greeted him in fluent English, though her Japanese accent was still charmingly evident. "Dinner is ready. You must be starving after your long flight."
TJ grinned. "I'm starving! The smells are amazing."
Mamori's mother waved them toward the dining table, which was set with an array of plates and bowls. "Please, sit. I hope you enjoy the meal. I made your favorites."
TJ blinked in surprise. "My favorites? How did you—"
Mamori chuckled, guiding TJ to the table. "I might have mentioned a few things to her about the kinds of food you like."
TJ smiled, touched by Mamori's thoughtfulness. The table was filled with a feast—sushi, tempura, miso soup, rice, and a variety of sides. The centerpiece, however, was a large pot of shabu-shabu, with tender slices of beef and fresh vegetables arranged around it. Steam rose from the pot, inviting everyone to dip their ingredients into the savory broth.
Mamori's mother placed a bowl of miso soup in front of TJ. "Eat, eat! I hope you enjoy everything."
TJ eagerly picked up his chopsticks. "This looks incredible. Thank you so much."
By the time they finished, TJ was stuffed, leaning back in his chair with a satisfied sigh. "That was honestly the best meal I've had in a long time. Aunt Mami, your an incredible cook."
Mamori's mother laughed, waving her hand modestly. "It's nothing special. Just food made with care and love."
Sena, her fork paused mid-air, looked at TJ with a curious grin. "So, now that you're here, what's the plan? You've always wanted to come to Japan, right? Are you just here to see the sights, or do you have something else in mind?"
Mamori, who had been listening attentively, chimed in. "Yeah, what do you want to do now that you're finally here? We know you've been dreaming of this for ages."
TJ leaned forward, clearly excited. "Honestly, I've been planning this trip for so long, it's still kind of surreal that I'm actually here. I can't wait to see all the sights—I've always been fascinated by Japanese culture. The temples, the gardens, the markets... I want to immerse myself in everything. And I'm really looking forward to school life here."
Sena raised an eyebrow. "School life? You're already fluent in Japanese, right?"
TJ nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, I've been studying the language for years. I wanted to make sure I could fully enjoy my time here without any language barriers. Now that I'm here, I'm excited to dive into the school culture. I've heard so much about the student life here—the clubs, the festivals, the whole atmosphere. I think it's going to be an experience unlike anything I've ever had."
Mamori smiled, clearly pleased with TJ's enthusiasm. "I think you're going to love it. The clubs here are really unique. You should check out the calligraphy club or the tea ceremony one. They're really big on traditions."
Sena nodded in agreement. "And don't forget the festivals! They're huge around here, especially in the summer. The energy is contagious, and there's always something exciting going on."
TJ's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Exactly! I've always wanted to be part of something like that. I've seen videos and read about it, but actually experiencing it is going to be a whole new level."
Mamori leaned back, crossing her arms with a grin. "Well, if you're planning on diving into school life, we'll definitely have to show you around. The best spots to eat, hang out, and of course, where all the coolest events are. You're not going to have any shortage of things to do."
TJ grinned, feeling completely at ease. "I'm definitely counting on you two to show me the ropes. I just want to enjoy every moment I can here—this is a dream come true."
