Chapter 44: Chapter 44 - VS Date Tech (Part 1)
The Karasuno players could be seen near the gym entrance waiting for lunchtime when a group of friends passed by them.
"The Karasuno team was impressive! They didn't even let the other team score double digits, it was a flawless victory!" one person said.
"Yeah! That Hinata scored ten points in a row just with his serve that looked like a cannon, it was unbelievable to watch," another person responded.
"Hehehe, looks like I'm starting to gain some notoriety!" Hinata said while grinning as he heard people's comments.
"Seems like you really enjoy being known and being the center of attention, huh..." Sugawara observed after looking at Hinata's smug face.
"Shouldn't you be worried that now everyone will pay even more attention to you and your serves?" Kageyama questioned.
"I'm not trying to hide anything! They can know my serve will be powerful, but if they don't have the power to stop it, what good is that prior knowledge... it's not like it's a secret weapon... it's just a weapon!" Hinata responded.
"But it's always good to have a secret weapon!" Kageyama contested.
"But we do have our secret weapon, that super-quick we've been working on!" Hinata said.
"What!? We haven't managed to get that right even once, and you want to use it in an important match!?" Kageyama said, shocked.
"I'm a decisive player when we need it most, just send it to me, and I'll slam the ball into the opponent's court!" Hinata said confidently.
"You just forgot that the other part of this quick depends on me too, you idiot!" Kageyama said while trying to land several hits on Hinata's ribs, who dodged them all.
"Come on!? What's wrong with trusting your setter!?" Hinata said while dodging.
"Well, in this case, he's right... if we want to win this tournament, we need to have mutual trust! Besides, for the next game, the starting formation will remain the same!" Ukai said with Daichi by his side.
"The next match will be at 1:30 PM, so stay warmed up," Daichi said while reading the sheet.
"Now it's lunchtime, but don't eat anything too heavy!" Ukai said, dismissing them.
After finishing eating, Hinata and Kageyama were passing the ball to each other to stay warmed up when Sugawara came their way.
"Do you have a minute?" Sugawara asked.
"Sure!" Hinata responded.
"I wanted to say that it was indeed Date Tech that beat us three months ago... and now we have you two, and now that Hinata has taken the Ace position, I feel... actually, all of us third-years feel that we're depending too much on you two, but nothing can be done about it. Actually, the responsibilities coming off Asahi's shoulders seem to be doing him good, but I hope this isn't overwhelming you, Hinata," Sugawara said, looking concerned.
"It's all good, I feel confident in leading Karasuno's attack, and I feel comfortable doing it! There's nothing to worry about!" Hinata responded confidently.
"Alright! I feel relieved... now let's head back because it's almost time for the game to start," Sugawara warned.
The Karasuno players were warming up while you could hear the shouts.
"GO! GO! LET'S GO! LET'S GO! DATE TECH!" the fans shouted from the stands.
"LET'S RUN!" one of the Date Tech players shouted, making everyone else start running, causing Date Tech to dominate the court's atmosphere.
"Let's practice receives!" Ukai said, grabbing a basket of balls and serving toward the Karasuno players in a line.
"Hey! Hinata, help me with this!" Nishinoya said, handing a ball to Hinata, who already had an idea of what he wanted and stepped back, then jumped and served in his direction with considerable power.
"Rolling Thunder Again!" Nishinoya shouted while making the receive with a jump, impressing some fans in the stands and Date Tech players.
"Considering it was Hinata's serve, it was a great receive, but I can't say the same about the name..." Tanaka said, holding back laughter.
"Both were great! Listen, you don't need to worry about your backs... I'll protect them, so just look forward!" Nishinoya said, managing to recover the match atmosphere.
Before the match started, both coaches discussed initial strategies.
"We saw they have a new Ace now, but nothing has changed, you just need to defeat him with our blocks just like you did with the old ace!" Takuro Oiwake said.
"They'll definitely start with a strong serve to try to mess up our formation and then stop our attack with a block, so we need to manage this first receive calmly!" Ukai said.
After hearing Ukai's strategy, the Karasuno players gathered in a circle.
"KARASUNO FIGHT!" Daichi shouted.
"YEAH!" Everyone shouted in unison and then went to their starting positions.
"Oh, looks like the rumors were true, Karasuno moved their Ace to play middle blocker so that orange-haired first-year could play wing spiker," Sadayuki Mizoguchi observed.
"Yes, from what I saw in our practice game... he was a high-level receiver, so this formation probably has the best defenders in the back," Nobuteru Irihata said.
The game started with Kamasaki serving toward Daichi.
"Daichi-san," Nishinoya said while watching Daichi make the receive and direct the pass to Kageyama, who after briefly analyzing the opponent's positioning, decided to set to the back of the court toward Hinata, who jumped before the line and when he was about to hit the ball noticed the double block from Aone and Futakuchi, but they seemed to want to mark his left hand, so he easily spiked aiming at the open right corner toward the back of the court, hitting the floor next to Moniwa.
1-0 Karasuno
"Nice spike, Hinata!" Tanaka shouted.
"Didn't you say he was left-handed?" Moniwa questioned toward Futakuchi, who had an extremely confused Aone by his side.
"I'm sure I heard some people saying he only used his left hand, and that's why the other team's block had to adapt..." Futakuchi said.
"Alright, next time we'll fix this!" Moniwa said.
"Wow! I felt the block was slightly delayed," Takeda observed.
"That's because they only block when the ball leaves the setter's hands, it's called a read block," Ukai explained.
"I see," Takeda responded.
After Karasuno's point, it was Kageyama's turn who served strongly but toward the opponent's libero who passed to Moniwa to set for Aone in a quick attack that was heading toward the floor of Karasuno's court but was stopped by Nishinoya, and then Kageyama decided to do a quick attack with Asahi who was at the net, who after jumping ended up being surprised by a block from Aone who managed to be fast enough and block Asahi's attack and direct the ball to Karasuno's court making the ball fall next to Nishinoya who couldn't stop it.
"Sorry! I'll get the next one!" Nishinoya said to Asahi.
"The ball wasn't very good, sorry!" Kageyama said.
"It's okay, I'll score next time!" Asahi said to both of them.
