Chapter 9: Chapter 9
Angry to see her like this, knowing that she always had to deal with everything on her own. He hugged her tenderly and fell asleep with her in his arms. The rest of the night passed quietly. He was woken up by a call from Noah. He rubbed his eyes with his free hand, the other still cradling the sleeping Sophie.
"Speak" He ordered in a hoarse, low voice.
"Where are you, boss? It's already after eight" He asked uncertainly.
"I won't be there until tonight. Let the marketing department know that Miss Sophie will be absent from work today. Let them do what they can on their own. I'm counting on them" Darell ended the call, leaving Noah shocked.
"The boss has never taken a day off before. And there will be no Miss Sophie... I just hope he won't cause her any trouble" Noah, left to his own duties, went to inform everyone about today's situation. The company will manage without a boss and manager until the evening.
Darell didn't wake up until around 2 p.m. He looked at the still sleeping girl in his arms. She looked much better after a long rest. As he tried to get up, Sophie started to squirm and woke up, trying to open her still heavy eyelids.
"Get some more rest" He said gently into her ear. "I'll wake you up later" As he said, she did so, having no idea that her favorite boss was with her. Darell went into the living room to make some necessary calls. There was a party tomorrow night that he couldn't miss. Everything he planned had to be perfect. Half an hour later, the food he ordered was delivered to her apartment. He put it on plates and brought to the bedroom.
"Sophie, it's time to eat something" He gently moved the woman's arm. Sophie woke up and sat on the bed, rubbing her sleepy face with her hands. Finally she saw Darell handing her a plate of warm food and realized what must have happened. Sighing heavily, she took the food and slowly began to eat it. Darell, sitting next to her, ate his portion in silence.
After finishing the meal, he took the plates to the sink and found her trying to walk to the bathroom on unsteady legs. He walked up to the woman and took her in his arms without asking. She didn't protest or look his way. With her head down, she allowed herself to be transported to the bathroom door, behind which she quickly disappeared, saying a short "thank you".
After using the toilet, she stood in front of the mirror at the sink, staring at her distraught face. Darell found out about her condition. That was the end of her. Knowing how much he values good employees, he will not want to have a defective one. It was bad. Very bad.
What to do now? Try to explain? Convince him that she is able to work like everyone else?
Sophie knew what kind of person he was. She wasn't supposed to let him down and then something like this happened, practically on the last day. Her eyes began to glaze over with tears. She had never been in a situation like this before. If he throws her out now, there will be no revenge. After being fired from two of the biggest companies... who will take her in?... What about her future? Her brother? Will she never see him again? Very depressed by the whole situation, she left the bathroom where Darell was waiting. Sophie looked into his shining serious eyes and couldn't stand it. Burying her face in her hands, she burst into tears. The surprised man grabbed her by the arms, trying to see what happened.
"Sophie! What's going on? Does it hurt somewhere? Shall I take you to the hospital? Talk to me!" He tried to ask the grieving woman.
"I let you down..." She said through tears. "Please don't throw me out!" She started crying again. Annoyed, Darell grabbed her hands and revealed her tearful face.
"What are you talking about? Why should I throw you away? Why would I do that?" He asked angrily.
"Because you know how weak I am" She looked at the ground. "You don't need someone like me" She whispered at the end. Tears flowed down her cheeks. The man ran a hand through his hair, realizing what she meant.
"I thought you were smarter" He muttered, taking her in his arms and laying her on the bed. He gave her tissues so she could clean herself up.
"I'm not going to throw you out" He started, trying to make her look him in the eye. "Why do you think I would get rid of such a valuable employee as you? Just because you're weaker?" He raised an eyebrow angrily. "I'm furious that I found out this way! If I hadn't come to you yesterday, who knows what condition you would be in now..." He clenched his fists.
"As always, I would somehow recover " She said under her breath, irritating him even more.
"How!? How!? Lying bloody with a high fever!? I wonder how?!" He got up from the bed and walked nervously next to the girl, shouting.
"And what do you think it was like so far!?" She couldn't stand it and screamed through tears. "Nobody ever helped me! When it came to this state, I still got hit for it! Do you think it's easy for me? That I want this?! I'm running around like a fool only to be abandoned at the end! I don't deserve to be treated like this! And then there are your whims!" She looked at him angrily. "What do you want from me?" She began to ask much more gently, trying to understand his motive. "Why do you want to eat with me and sleep next to me? You don't do this with other employees... Is this some kind of revenge? You took me in and now that I'm at your mercy you can do whatever you want with me?" Her distraught, tearful face made Darell lose all his anger.
"Damn!" He shouted, walking up to the surprised Sophie and hugging her.
"For some reason, you have such an effect on me" He began, nuzzling her neck. "I calm down with you, I can sleep normally... I haven't had that for a long time" He stroked her back gently. "I usually collapsed from exhaustion, unable to sleep for several days. There was no medicine that could help me with this. On the contrary. They harmed me even more.
When I first laid down next to you, I didn't even know when I fell asleep. I felt such a strange peace then..." He looked at her face wet with tears, gently wiping it with his hand. "You are my solution, Sophie. At least the first one I found. I never ask anyone for anything, but now... Sophie, stay with me" He looked pleadingly at the surprised girl. "It's enough as before. Once every two days, let me fall asleep next to you and let's eat something together from time to time. You will continue to work normally. You can be sure I won't throw you out. Even if my condition improves. You have my word" He put his hand over his heart, speaking as sincerely as possible. Sophie sniffled and looked at the man, half knowing what he felt. It was hard to hide her condition from others... If she had the opportunity to improve it, she would definitely try like he is doing now. She slowly nodded her head. A gentle smile appeared on his face.
"And you? How do you feel? Do you want to rest some more?" He grabbed her hand and ran his thumb over it.
"I'm better now. Thank you for everything and sorry for the trouble" She looked down again, feeling guilty.
"Let's try not to have a next time, hmm?" He looked at her expressively, letting her know that she should tell him everything.
"Yes, boss" She replied reluctantly. "What about today's work?" She stole a glance at Darell, who looked at the time.
"I'll have to go there soon and check what's been done"
"I'm going with you" She blurted out without thinking, getting out of bed.
"Out of the question!" He ordered. "You're not going anywhere in this condition. I could manage without you before, I can do it now" He looked menacingly at the woman.
"At least I'll come tomorrow for a moment" She pleaded grumpily.
"Two hours max. You'll be busy later" A dangerous smile appeared on his face.
"What do you mean?" The girl asked suspiciously, feeling that he had prepared something for her.
"How so? Don't you want to show yourself off to someone and brag?"
"It's only been a week.."
"Exactly" He smiled sinisterly. "And you've already done so much damage to them. Besides, everything's already taken care of. You're coming with me. You have a hairdresser and a beautician scheduled tomorrow, where your dress will be waiting" He informed the surprised Sophie as if nothing had happened.
"Can I say something?"
"NO. I have to go. And you" He pointed at her wagging his finger. "Rest"
He left before she could answer. With squinted eyes, she looked in the direction he went, making a huff.
"Dictator..." She lay on the bed, thinking about tomorrow. Darell wanted her to proudly face the people who hurt her badly. She didn't even know what she could say to them. "Who knows... Maybe only the boss will talk..." Her eyes slowly started to close and a moment later she fell asleep again.
She woke up full of energy at the same time as always. She took a hot bath and ate breakfast. She knew she could only come for two hours, but she didn't know how much the others had managed to get done in her absence. She lasted until seven o'clock and quickly walked towards the company. Sitting down at her desk, she started looking through the documents left by the employees. Knowing what had been done, she read a few more emails and began to finalize the agreements. Two hours passed quickly but she managed to finish everything. She texted Darell with a full report. A few minutes later, a woman walked into her office with a smile on her face.
