Chapter 338: Pluto's Pets
Blake watched the group head inside the shelter with a small smile, leaning against the Brown Bear, who sat at his side. Casually, he reached into his pocket, pulling out a liquorice wand and popping it into his mouth. The sweetness danced on his tongue as he relaxed, but Xiong Da wasn't so easily distracted.
The massive bear, his armor gleaming faintly in the sunlight, tilted his head down, fixing his large eyes on the candy.
"Oh no, don't even think about it. You're a bear; you can't eat this stuff. Too sweet," Blake teased, wagging a finger.
"Whoa! (Too sweet for me? What do you take me for? I could eat five liters of honey and still crave more!)" the Brown Bear protested, his deep growl vibrating through the ground.
Blake sighed but relented, pulling out another liquorice wand and holding it up. "Fine, but don't blame me if it's not to your taste."
The Brown Bear opened his enormous maw, and Blake tossed the candy in. The bear snapped his jaws shut, crunching through the treat effortlessly, but his face quickly contorted in disgust.
"Oh oh oh... (This is awful! Not even close to honey! I bet you've never tasted anything really good. Next time, I'll find you some fresh, wild honey. Bears like me are honey connoisseurs, you know.)"
Blake smirked, leaning back. "Sure, sure. I'll stick to my licorice, thanks. You forget I'm the one who finds all your honey anyway."
Their banter was interrupted when Blake's sharp gaze shifted toward a distant hill. A shadow moved at its crest, drawing his attention. The playful smile faded from his face, replaced by a steely focus.
"Xiong Da," he said softly, his tone dropping. "Stay alert. We've got company."
The bear followed Blake's gaze, his keen eyes locking onto the hill. A bizarre creature crouched there, silhouetted against the sky. It was grotesque: a crocodile's elongated snout, a lion's muscular upper body adorned with a thick mane, a hippopotamus's bulky lower half, and a crocodilian tail that lashed the ground menacingly.
"Whoa... (That's one ugly critter! But it looks weak. I could swat it like a fly, believe it or not!)" Xiong Da scoffed, his bravado evident.
Blake remained silent, closing his eyes to activate his sensory perception. The world around him lit up in his mind, each movement and presence becoming vividly clear. His face darkened as he picked up on the truth.
"Don't underestimate them, Xiong Da. These things aren't solitary hunters—they're pack animals."
His senses revealed more creatures lurking behind the hill—dozens of them. Fifty, maybe sixty. A full-on assault would be suicide, even with Xiong Da's advanced armor and immense strength.
Blake's fingers tightened around the licorice wand in his mouth. "Stay back and protect Cassandra and Fleur. I'll handle this."
"Oh oh oh... (Handle it? Boss, don't tell me you're scared!)" Xiong Da teased, but his tone grew serious as he watched Blake's expression.
The creature on the hill growled a guttural, bone-chilling sound that echoed across the plains. Its comrades began to emerge, forming an ominous line at the hill's crest.
"Amuts," Blake muttered under his breath, recognition flashing in his eyes.
The creatures descended, their hulking forms moving with unnerving speed. Blake's memory raced as he recalled his studies. Amuts were legendary beasts from Egyptian mythology, said to serve Osiris, the god of the underworld. They devoured the hearts of the wicked, ensuring that only the righteous passed into the afterlife.
'If these things are real, does that mean the system pulled them from myth?' Blake wondered, a chill running down his spine. 'What else could it summon?'
"Xiong Da, no matter what happens, you keep those two safe," Blake ordered, his voice firm.
"Oh oh oh... (Got it. But if they get close, don't blame me for tearing them apart!)"
Blake stepped forward, his hands moving quickly as he scattered a handful of seeds into the air. Muttering an incantation, he activated the spell.
The seeds erupted into life, forming a massive, writhing barrier of black tentacles. The devil's net—a plant mutation Blake had cultivated—sprang up, its inky vines lashing out at the oncoming Amuts.
The creatures snarled, their sharp claws tearing at the barrier. Blake didn't wait to see if it would hold. He pulled out a series of orbs and hurled them into the air.
With a burst of light, his Fantastic Beasts appeared: White, the massive white tiger; the Venomous Leopard, sleek and deadly; and Agcarius, the powerful horned beast king.
"Take them down!" Blake commanded.
The beasts charged into battle. White roared, her claws swiping through flesh and bone. The Venomous Leopard darted among the Amuts, slashing at their exposed sides with deadly precision. Agcarius used his massive horns to gore several creatures at once, his strength unmatched.
Blake drew his energy swords, the twin blades glowing faintly as he dashed toward the largest Amut.
The pack's leader roared, its crimson eyes locking onto Blake. It lunged, its powerful jaws snapping just inches from his face. Blake ducked, countering with a slash that left a deep gash along its side.
"You're strong," Blake muttered, his eyes narrowing. "But you're not invincible."
The Amut snarled, circling him. The two clashed repeatedly, Blake's agility allowing him to evade its strikes while landing precise blows.
Meanwhile, the battlefield was chaos. Cassandra and Fleur, who had emerged from the shelter, stood frozen as they watched the carnage.
"What are those things?!" Fleur cried, her face pale.
"Blake, get back here!" Cassandra shouted, her voice shaking.
But Blake didn't retreat. He was a blur of motion, weaving between attacks and retaliating with unerring accuracy.
Xiong Da remained near the girls, his massive form acting as a shield.
"Whoa... (Don't worry, I've got you covered.)"
Despite the devil's net and the beasts' efforts, some Amuts broke through. They rushed toward Blake's position, but his creatures intercepted them, tearing them apart with brutal efficiency.
Blake's focus remained on the leader. The two clashed again, their movements creating a violent rhythm.
"Your pack is gone," Blake said, panting slightly. "Surrender."
The Amut roared defiantly, lunging once more. This time, Blake was ready. He sidestepped, driving both blades into the creature's chest. It let out a final, guttural growl before collapsing.
Blake withdrew his swords, turning to survey the battlefield. The remaining Amuts lay defeated, their bodies scattered across the plains. His beasts stood victorious but bloodied, their forms shimmering faintly before returning to their orbs.
"All clear," Blake announced, his voice steady despite the exhaustion in his eyes.
Cassandra and Fleur rushed to his side, their expressions a mix of relief and disbelief.
"Blake, you're insane," Cassandra said, her voice trembling.
"But thank you," Fleur added, her gratitude sincere.
Blake smirked, popping another licorice wand into his mouth. "Just another day on the job."
Xiong Da ambled over, his armored form gleaming in the fading light.
"Whoa... (Next time, let me fight the big one. I could've handled it.)"
Blake chuckled, patting the bear's side. "Maybe next time."
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the group began to regroup, their thoughts heavy with the implications of the battle. If the system could summon creatures from myth, what else awaited them in this strange new world?
