Chapter 28 - Victim card
Sensing that the situation wasn’t in his favor, He Shijian quickly played the victim card, painting Qin Nan as a heinous villain who had unjustly injured He Qing and his companions. He emphasized how despicable and cruel Qin Nan’s actions were, insisting they deserved severe punishment.
However, most of the villagers weren’t buying it. Everyone knew exactly what kind of person He Shijian was.
As for the so-called “victims,” He Qing and his cohorts were notorious troublemakers in the village, constantly scheming and stealing. The villagers had long harbored resentment toward them. Now that the trio had been beaten and were looking pitiful, instead of feeling sympathy, the villagers were secretly delighted.
Before Qin Nan even opened his mouth to explain, the majority of the crowd had already decided he was innocent.
“Qin Nan, why don’t you explain your side of the story? Don’t worry, I’ll make sure justice is served,” the village chief said.
“There’s no need to explain. Justice lies in the hearts of the people, I didn’t call everyone here to clear up some trivial misunderstanding,” Qin Nan replied calmly.
“Then why did you summon everyone?” The village chief looked puzzled.
“Wifey, bring out the wolf head,” Qin Nan instructed.
Shangguan Rouyue nodded slightly. With a wave of her hand, a massive wolf’s head emerged from her sleeve and landed heavily on the ground.
Many villagers immediately recognized it—it was the head of the ferocious beast that had been causing chaos in the area and injuring several villagers.
“I called everyone here to let you know that this beast has been slain. You can now go up the mountain without worry,” Qin Nan announced.
“Miracle doctor, you’re amazing!”
“Actually, isn’t his wife the amazing one?”
“But being able to marry such a powerful wife just proves that Qin Nan is amazing too!”
The villagers murmured amongst themselves, voices filled with admiration.
The village chief, grinning ear to ear, stepped forward. Despite still recovering from his injuries, he seemed energized, moving briskly.
“Thank you, Qin Nan! You’ve done a great service for NiuJiao Village. On behalf of everyone, I extend our gratitude!” the chief said sincerely.
“No need for thanks. I’m also a member of this village. If a beast is causing harm, it’s only right that I deal with it,” Qin Nan replied with a righteous tone.
The village chief admired Qin Nan even more. He couldn’t help but think to himself, What an outstanding young man! If only he weren’t already married, I’d have him marry my granddaughter in a heartbeat.
Turning his gaze to He Shijian and his group, Qin Nan smirked coldly.
“Unlike certain people, who lounge around idly even when danger looms, strutting around the village as if they own the place. Big and burly as you are, you’re all bark and no bite. When there’s a threat, you’re nowhere to be seen. But when someone like me is helping the villagers, you only know how to cause trouble.”
“You can’t even stand seeing the villagers come to me for treatment, so you try to sabotage my work. And yet, when your little schemes backfire, you have the nerve to come here demanding justice? The audacity is astounding,” Qin Nan sneered.
The villagers turned their eyes to the He family, their gazes filled with scorn.
Qin Nan was right. He Qing, who always acted tough and bullied the villagers, didn’t even dare to face the wild beast. What kind of cowardice was that?
Humiliated, He Qing felt his reputation slipping away. If this continued, how could he continue lording over the village?
“What are you all staring at? If that beast were still alive, I’d have been the one to kill it!” He Qing blustered.
“Who are you fooling? A dozen of us, led by the village chief, couldn’t handle that beast. You? You’d be running with your tail between your legs!” a villager mocked.
“Are you looking for a beating?” He Qing growled.
“Go ahead and try! Let’s see if you’re still so tough,” the villager taunted, completely unafraid.
Now that He Qing was severely injured and had no fighting power left, what was there to fear?
He Qing was so furious that he was practically smoking with rage, his eyes bulging as big as oxen’s, yet he was utterly helpless against the situation.
He Shijian stepped forward, his expression filled with righteous indignation, and said:
“This isn’t the time to talk about anything else! Qin Nan’s act of beating the three of them like this is too excessive! He must take responsibility!”
Qin Nan let out a cold laugh, not bothering to argue. He simply walked toward He Qing and the other two, standing tall in front of them.
As the three looked on in stunned disbelief, Qin Nan raised his hand and delivered a series of crisp slaps to each of them—smack, smack, smack.
The force behind his strikes was immense, leaving their mouths bloodied and their heads buzzing. Disoriented and overwhelmed, they completely lost their sense of direction.
“Yes, I hit them. What of it?” Qin Nan asked, his tone dripping with disdain.
“Outrageous! You dare assault them right in front of me? Is there no law left?” He Shijian roared.
“I don’t just dare to hit them—I’ll hit you too, old fool,” Qin Nan said and promptly slapped He Shijian across the face repeatedly.
Others didn’t dare offend He Shijian because he was skilled in medicine, and they feared he might refuse to treat them if provoked.
But Qin Nan himself was proficient in medicine—why would he need to fear offending him?
Even if Qin Nan were to fall ill, he wouldn’t waste his time seeking treatment from a quack like He Shijian.
Moreover, He Shijian had misunderstood one crucial fact: reasoning becomes unnecessary when the power disparity is this vast.
The strongest fist is the ultimate reasoning.
“You dare hit me!” He Shijian snarled, his face twisted with rage.
Qin Nan responded with a swift kick, sending He Shijian sprawling to the ground.
“That’s right. I hit you, you old fool. What are you gonna do about it?” Qin Nan asked arrogantly, his tone dripping with disdain.
He Shijian was so furious he almost had a stroke. When had he ever been this humiliated, and in front of the entire village no less?
It was utterly disgraceful, a humiliation of the highest order.
He Shijian immediately began shouting for his lackeys to deal with Qin Nan, to break his arms and legs.
But no one responded. They all simply stood there, watching in silence.
Of course, no one was stupid. Who would willingly court death?
Shangguan Rouyue stood there, her icy gaze fixed on the scene. The chilling intensity in her eyes made it clear: if anyone dared to make a move, the consequences would be unimaginable.
As a result, no one dared to lift a finger. He Shijian was like a lone commander without troops—no matter how much he shouted and ordered, no one followed.
“If you’re so eager to stand up for those three, then you can pay their medical bills,” Qin Nan said coldly. “Two gold per person. Hand it over now.”
“You scoundrel!” He Shijian trembled with rage, his voice quivering.
“Stubborn fool,” Qin Nan muttered with a shake of his head. Without hesitation, he stepped forward, snatching the pouch tied to He Shijian’s waist.
He opened the pouch to take a look—gold, silver, and copper coins were all neatly arranged. After a quick calculation, it totaled seven gold plates, more than enough to cover the medical expenses, with some left over.
This old scoundrel was surprisingly wealthy, carrying seven gold plates on him in a rural village like Niujiao Village—what a rarity.
Without hesitation, Qin Nan pocketed the pouch, treating the excess as compensation for his “mental distress.”
The entire process unfolded before the villagers, who watched intently. Not a single person thought Qin Nan had done anything wrong. On the contrary, they found it deeply satisfying.
The He family, led by He Shijian and He Qing, had been lording over the village for far too long, earning widespread resentment.
“Qin Nan, if you don’t mind, please come to my house as a guest and share a meal. It’s a small token of gratitude for taking care of that beast,” the village chief offered warmly.
“Then I won’t stand on ceremony,” Qin Nan replied with a grin.
The village chief, not forgetting courtesy, extended the invitation to Shangguan Rouyue as well. She nodded in agreement, her usual reserved demeanor softening slightly.
In addition to the couple, the chief also invited a few other respected figures in the village, organizing a small banquet to celebrate. As an added touch, he suggested that the occasion double as a belated wedding feast for Qin Nan and Shangguan Rouyue.
Though the two were already married, they had not yet held a formal banquet.
For cultivators, such worldly customs were not particularly important. However, with the village chief taking the lead and the opportunity to receive blessings from the villagers, the couple happily accepted the gesture.
