Chapter 16: Chapter 15: The Incomplete Giant
The twelve chains finally snapped at this moment, and the iron ball fell together with the collapsing steel columns towards the base.
Like a giant iron fist smashing through the wall, the weight of the iron ball was even heavier than imagined, it directly created a large hole in the base, sinking halfway into it.
Wei Tianyang was right in front of the iron ball, and only when he got close to it did he realize how big it actually was; the width of the ball was much wider than any large shopping mall he had seen, and its height was roughly estimated to be over 20 meters.
Before he could think further, the fractured part of the base began to spread, and at that moment the destroyed columns also crashed down onto the ground, the platform above his head tilting more than 45 degrees.
The ground cracked open, Wei Tianyang felt a sudden sink under his feet, falling into the interior space of the base together with the iron ball.
Facing upward, he watched as the sky grew further and further away, the giant iron ball like a black sun blocking out the light, all around were countless Medicine People falling just like him.
The fall lasted no more than 5 seconds, during which he felt several of his ribs break, and a sweet liquid oozed out of his mouth.
Then, a giant shadow descended, and the iron ball smashed just six steps away from him.
"Falling into Hell...," he muttered.
His vision began to blur, three terrifying cracks appeared on the surface of the iron ball, accompanied by a crisp cracking sound.
Following that, with a loud bang, the iron ball shattered like an eggshell. Scorching heatwaves accompanied by thick black smoke burst out first.
And under that thick black smoke, within those wide cracks, Wei Tianyang saw a gigantic black humanoid figure.
The upper deck of the entire containment facility was still collapsing, steel columns destroyed and plunged into the base or slid onto the flat plain. The square platform, like a pot lid, was stuck on the base, making the interior darker than night.
Ruan Yu and Hans leaned out from the helicopter cabin, looking down at the destroyed 091 containment site.
"We need to deploy ground forces!" Ruan Yu said while holding her headset.
Hans shook his head, "Before that, we probably need to write a report first..."
"Fuck the report! We can't lose 091!" Ruan Yu cursed angrily.
But the helicopter gradually ascended, flying toward the south of the containment site.
Ruan Yu turned around, shouting in the direction of the pilot's seat, "What the hell are you doing?! We're not going anywhere! Land this thing now!"
As soon as her words fell, a cold, deep voice from Sethiyan came through the headset, pressing in:
"We lost six brothers and a heavy transport aircraft. The sergeant is very unhappy, he wants to investigate this personally."
"This is my project; it's none of your security department's business! Remember you're just hired to help us move. We'll compensate for the dead!" Ruan Yu retorted.
"Our brothers died here, and that makes it our business," the other party replied.
After saying that, the man cut off the communication.
A heavy helicopter swept past from the right, Ruan Yu watched as it flew away, grinding her teeth in frustration.
"How are we going to handle the accident at 091 containment…" Hans said uneasily.
Ruan Yu did not reply, her fists clenched tightly as she silently watched the increasingly smaller containment site, disappearing from her sight.
She took out the empty cigarette pack from her jacket pocket, looked down and saw it was already empty.
Below the colossal debris, the huge sounds of falling objects slowly subsided, stones collapsed, and the sound of water came from below.
Wei Tianyang awoke from unconsciousness, the darkness around him so thick he couldn't see his own hands, but his red eyes possessed nighttime visibility, outlining everything around him in deep shades of gray and bright white lines.
His gaze immediately fell upon the shattered sphere, its interior entirely empty. Was the giant black figure he once glimpsed just an illusion?
Then, he turned his head, looking up.
This sight made him widen his eyes.
Above him, the giant was now poised with one hand on the ground, half-kneeling right above him, using his broad and powerful body to shield him from all falling stones.
The gray-white bands of light flowed on the giant's body, alternating between light and dark, as if breathing.
Following the glowing patterns, Wei Tianyang discovered, the giant was incomplete; it lacked a head, as well as its entire left arm and right lower leg, and hard as rock steel muscles crisscrossed with cracks like spiderwebs, with a through-and-through hole on its left chest.
Wei Tianyang looked at its right hand pressed on the ground, estimating that his whole body was probably the size of one of its little fingers.
No matter how he considered it, this giant must have been attacked before its death, killed and then dismembered...
But wait... if it were dead... how could it have moved from within the iron ball to protect him?
And it seemed as if it was protecting itself?
Wei Tianyang was somewhat puzzled, but he didn't dare draw conclusions recklessly. Perhaps... this creature only wanted to kill him, but its motion had been interrupted by the collapsing building.
He remembered the archive bag he had collected in the lab, which he rolled up and secured with the drawstring of his surgical suit, carrying it with him.
The frequently appearing "091" on those scattered papers, was probably referring to this, right?
Could it be... the black medicine that Tiantai Pharmaceutical had injected into him came from this creature...
In his thoughts, the faces of the muscular man, Glasses Beast, and the other two suddenly appeared in his vision.
"Come on 1202, we are about to be free!" the muscular man's voice rang out beside Wei Tianyang's ear.
Bai reached out to help Wei Tianyang slowly stand up; the surviving hundreds of Medicine People also gradually gathered, whispering and comforting each other.
Just now, having fallen from such a height, Wei Tianyang thought he was undoubtedly going to die; unexpectedly, he had only broken a few bones.
"If it weren't for it, I might have been crushed to death while unconscious," Wei Tianyang said as he looked up at the giant, but the giant had disappeared.
He looked around in surprise but could no longer find any trace of its existence.
Giant steel columns penetrated the ground, boulders rolled down, and various objects like computers and cabinets fell from other floors scattered everywhere.
Only the spot where he himself had lain, only the area covered by the giant, was empty, forming a small open space.
Looking at the survivors and recalling the thousands in their group during the escape, now reduced to less than fifty, Wei Tianyang couldn't help feeling a bit sad.
But seeing that the muscular man, Glasses Beast, Bai, and Bald Uncle were all safe, his mood slightly improved.
"What is this place?"
Wei Tianyang asked as he surveyed the surroundings. To the east, he saw a descending iron escalator, and the sound of rushing water could also be heard from that direction.
"This is the lowest level of the shelter, where they dump corpses and process wastewater and garbage. If we follow the staircase down along the east wall, we'll be free!" Glasses Beast explained.
Wei Tianyang looked at the one-eyed man, somewhat surprised, "You can see it too?"
"After all, we are all products of the same series; it's just that you are the one closest to the retail version," Bai said with a smile.
After Bai finished speaking, everyone laughed. As they laughed, silence fell again.
Wei Tianyang shook his head and led everyone towards the stairs.
"What are everyone's plans after we get out?" Wei Tianyang suddenly asked.
No one responded.
Perhaps they were afraid that after saying something, they wouldn't be able to leave?
He laughed self-deprecatingly and continued down the iron escalator.
The walls of the staircase were slightly damp, and the handrails were sticky. The narrow staircase could only fit one person at a time, and there was no lighting on the walls.
Every twelve steps there was a turn, and the wind blowing from an unknown source whistled through the moist, dark stairwell, Wei Tianyang kept walking down, feeling as though he was truly descending into Hell.
Yet, within a few minutes, bright light unexpectedly shone around the next staircase's corner. The wind grew stronger, carrying the fragrance of soil.
The exit!
It must be; he had looked down from the top of the base earlier and spotted a black river.
Surely, this was the source of that river.
Wei Tianyang was the first to round the corner, saying, "How are you all so familiar with this place?"
The sudden white light made his night-vision eyes uncomfortable, and after a few seconds, when his vision returned to normal, he could finally see everything clearly.
The corner led to a huge, open underground reservoir, its end blocked by a gigantic iron sewage outlet.
Gushing black wastewater flowed through the large iron pipes into the reservoir and was then discharged untreated into the wilderness, forming a black river.
Interestingly, the black water had no smell.
Outside light shone through the sewage outlet, like a door opening in the darkness.
Wei Tianyang had just taken a step forward when he saw a tall figure appear in the light.
