Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Reunion
"Sorry I'm late," Thor's voice sounded from the doorway.
"Finally! You're back," Tony said, grinning. "All the beauties here couldn't wait! Wait… and who's this?" He gave an exaggerated look, noticing an unfamiliar woman by Thor's side, then sighed in exasperation. Every time Thor showed up, he seemed to have a different woman with him.
Tony glanced around the room, taking in all the women who, to his amusement, had complicated ties with Thor. Among them were Natasha Romanoff, Jane Foster, Peggy Carter… even Dr. Helen Cho, who had recently joined Maya Hansen's research center, and Dr. Christine Palmer, a surgeon he'd met who was now the family doctor at Trudheim Manor.
He chuckled to himself. Even the models he'd invited were throwing glances Thor's way.
Then, from the bar, Minerva's eyes suddenly lit up. She hurried over, looking Carol up and down with curiosity. "You're… Vers?"
Carol glanced back coolly. "You've got it wrong. The name's Carol Danvers. Vers was never my name."
"Carol Danvers?" A familiar voice called out from across the room, followed by the rapid approach of Nick Fury.
Carol recognized him instantly. "Nick?" She smiled apologetically, glancing at his eye patch. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to let Goose scratch you and cause all that…"
"Meow…" An orange tabby cat bounded over from the sofa, leaping happily into Carol's arms.
At that moment, Steve Rogers looked over, confused. "Uh… didn't you say, Director, that you lost your eye trusting someone you shouldn't have?"
Fury's expression shifted awkwardly, but he recovered quickly. "Must've misheard," he said, brushing it off. "Anyway, Carol, when did you get back?"
"I called her back to help with a big threat," Thor interjected. "And here's the trophy."
He raised a hand, conjuring a portal in midair. With a heavy thud, a massive, blackened figure tumbled through. It was a hulking, armored creature, covered in thick, scale-like armor, its massive frame nearly rivaling the Hulk's in size.
Nebula's eyes widened. "Cull Obsidian! My father's strongest fighter," she said, her voice laced with concern. "Then the enemy you were talking about was… Thanos? Are you alright?"
The others turned somber, their expressions shifting as they took in the significance. Thor had often shared details about Thanos—the enemy he feared most, and an imminent threat to Earth.
"I'm fine," Thor reassured them, waving a hand. "I'm still not quite on your father's level, Nebula. But Carol and I managed to hold him off together."
A stunned silence fell over the room, then Natasha rolled her eyes and smacked him lightly on the arm. "You jerk! You should've led with that instead of scaring us half to death. So you're really that strong now?"
Thor grinned. "Well, 'holding him off' isn't exactly accurate. Carol and I couldn't fully break through his defenses. Honestly, his army wasn't here, and his lieutenants were weaker this time. If he'd brought his full force, we might not have stood a chance. Luckily, he only had a handful of Black Order members with him."
Most of the Avengers looked relieved. After all, Thor, Wanda, and Carol had returned safely, while Thanos had lost a key warrior. That clearly indicated the advantage lay with them.
Thor decided not to elaborate. Ignorance is bliss, he thought. The real reason the battle had gone smoothly was because Thanos hadn't brought his full army or his warship, Sanctuary II. Without that interference, Wanda was able to focus her power, keeping Thanos suppressed long enough for Thor and Carol to handle the rest of the Black Order. In a chaotic battle with armies, Wanda's output would've been drastically limited.
Turning back to the group, Thor announced, "I'll be leaving for a bit. Carol will stay on Earth temporarily. Nebula, Minerva, you're coming with me—I'll need guides."
Carol pouted slightly. She was busy enough as it was, but Thor had convinced her to stay, mentioning that Earth was in for some tough times ahead.
"Leaving again? Already?" Natasha asked, surprised.
"Yes. Thanos' defenses are too strong, even nuclear weapons wouldn't faze him," Thor explained. "I need to find materials to forge a weapon—a king's weapon, one that truly belongs to me."
"A weapon that can… kill Thanos?" Steve asked, his face serious.
